If you’re looking for a super-kitschy general store or café to pass the time and would otherwise be bored at a u-pick-em orchard, this isn’t the place for you. At first glance, I was a bit apprehensive. I’m so used to seeing orchards all decked out and cutesy, but this was a simple, unassuming farm. Since we were early, it was so quiet that we weren’t even sure anyone was around, but once out of the car and strolling into the store and orchard, I was sold on its goodness. This is a hard-working, family-owned orchard with amazing vegetables and fruit: apples and peaches straight from the branches that grew them. They have many peaceful rows of trees and hand maps so you know what’s what. If you’d rather not pick fruits yourself(although, that’s part of the fun!), they have a small garage-type store with baskets and boxes full of freshly picked fruits and vegetables for the buying. And since they know their produce, what they pick is prime. I encourage you to take a stroll through the orchard, though. It’s so tranquil and beautiful. These have got to be some of the most amazing peaches I’ve ever tasted. I tried each of the three available varieties(Canadian Harmony, Loring and Red Kist) and each is perfectly juicy with just the right amount of sweet and tart. The apples are also quite stellar. I had to pick my Honey Crisps from the store as they only just came into season in that part of Michigan this week, but so crisp and gorgeous. Always better than any grocery store apples, Honey Crisps and all other varieties picked fresh from the orchards remind me of why I don’t ever buy or eat apples until late summer or fall. So much for«an apple a day…» Big Dan’s also offers homemade preserves, honey, maple syrups and other treats from local neighbors. I bought some maple syrup in a glass cabin-shaped bottle from local makers Jack & Jill’s Maple Hill Farm. :) Big Dan’s offers hay rides, but at such an early hour, we didn’t see any takers. A man with the store sat at a folding table next to the checkout counter painting faces on pumpkins, preparing for the upcoming holidays — too sweet. We knew Big Dan the minute we saw him. He was friendly and warm and welcoming, even to apparent city-folk like us. :) Ask him which peach variety is the sweetest and he’ll encourage you to just try some. Definitely an orchard I will revisit. Big kudos to Big Dan!
