Rolling Smoke BBQ & Catering Co

Because I live down Bakerton Road, I pass this place all the time and have wondered if it was any good. Now I know: it isn’t. There a a bajillion BBQ and smoker places in this area and they are all equally «meh». This place is no exception except, that the baked beans were completely not to my taste. When should baked beans ever taste like apple pie? Never.
The sauce is entirely too sweet – not really something you want on a hot summer day. I am originally from Texas, so I know what sort of thing you want to eat on a hot summer day.
It seems like the pulled pork gets good reviews at this place, so perhaps it was just my luck to order the smoked chicken and St. Louis ribs instead of the sandwich. Perhaps if the meat came with sides instead of having to pay for them separately, I would not have considered this really overpriced.

This was absolutely the best pulled pork sandwich that I’ve ever tasted. Be sure to order the purple Peggy barbecue pork sandwich –unbelievable. And don’t forget to get A side order of smoked mac & cheese — crazy good! If you’re around Thanksgiving time in Harpers Ferry get some of his smoked turkey. With that said, the pricing is on the salty side — $$.

The Mac and cheese had a great flavor and I broke my bread fast for the purple piggy it was worth it!

This is my first review. I’ve enjoyed Unilocal for quite a while but never bothered to post. I simply HAD to post after eating here today!!! Best bbq I’ve ever tasted! We had the ribs, baked beans, mango slaw, potatoe salad… AND THE BEST macaroni and cheese I’ve ever had! (5 cheeses, pepper, and awesome smoky flavor. we even went back for seconds of this). The ribs melted off the bone, the sauce exquisite. Other sides all delish as well! Divine! Eat here, you won’t regret it!!!

Tasty pulled pork and brisket sandwiches. Was a bit apprehensive about wait time based on reviews… happily ours was only about 20 minutes — did have to forego the smoked mac & cheese side as that would have been an additional 10 minute wait.

Opened at 12… Waited for almost an hour because everyone we asked said it was well worth it…
I also think the food was worth the wait. Just shopped around at the farm stand next door to pass the time… Sipped on some cherry cider which I’ve never had before… Very sweet but delish.
Ordered a Purple Piggy Sandwich — WAS EXCELLENT .The pulled pork was smokey, saucey with just enough chunks of meat and fat. The mango coleslaw was a nice sweet cut with huge chucks of sweet mango.
Now, I personally think the mac n cheese side was some of the best I ever parted my lips to. It was so cheesy with the strings of cheese from plate to mouth it was quite a a visual as well. The mustard taste took the shells up a notch.

I was rather disappointed with my experience here. Mostly because of the wait.
7:10pm — Arrive and order (short line — easy to order), I ordered a pulled pork sandwich
7:20pm — one of our party gets his potato salad
7:30pm — getting a little impatient and people seem to be cheering when they receive their order… not a good sign.
7:35pm — went and got a great milk shake from across the parking lot, my friend is finished with his potato salad
7:45pm — still waiting, the sun is getting close to setting, which was really pretty
8:00pm — ohh one of my friends got his food
8:10pm — finally got my 1 sandwich and begin to dig in
8:11pm — sandwich is gone
The pulled pork sandwich was good enough, the pork itself was tender, and wasn’t fatty. The sauce was just OK, it was just far to sweet for my taste, not as sweet as you will get out of a grocery store bottle but there really wasn’t any depth to it, but I was hungry so I chowed down
Had a gotten my sandwich much faster I might have better things to say about this place, but it was kind of insane how long it took for me to get my food. Overall the price was fair, $ 7 for the sandwich, but I would never wait an hour again for it.

Very good food! I went here on a suggestion from friends, and I was not disappointed at all. Not being able to sit down had me a little skeptical, but the quality of the food made up for that. I had the half rack and the pork was amazing. The meat was the most tender BBQ I’ve had in the Maryland/​Virginia area. The proportion of sauce to meat was perfect. This is definitely my spot when I come to Harper’s Ferry.

Boulders turn into sand faster than the employees at Rolling Smoke work. Be prepared to spend half a day in line and waiting for the flavorless, overcooked meats. BE SURE to pop an imodium with your meal cause honey, you’re going to need it.

YUM. Was hosting an event in Purcellville for 30 – 40 people, and needed to find local BBQ to cater. I found Rolling Smoke on Unilocal,but wasn’t sure what to expect since I couldn’t find a website — should have known the best BBQ comes from the side of the road! I called and asked for a menu… they sent a pricing list and I ordered everything via email and paid through Paypal (very easy).
Food was all ready when I went to pick it up at the outside stand (they let me cut the VERY LONG line to pick up the 4 trays!), and it looked soooo good. We ordered pulled pork, chicken (dark), smoked mac, and purple mango slaw. They throw in buns and sauce, too. The guys were very gracious and working their butts off in very hot sun. Impressive!
Everything was a huge hit at the party. The line alone will tell you this place is worth the wait! If you go to Harpers Ferry and don’t stop here for lunch, you’re missing out.

We stopped here after going tubing and were glad that we did! We got here right when it opened and placed a huge order for about 15 people. There was another large order in front of us as well.
Let me tell you, this was some of the best barbecue I have had. It was tender, not too fatty, and had a lot of flavor without being too salty. Pretty much everything you could ask for in a barbecue dish. We tried every item on the menu and basically everything was top notch including the sides.
The only drawback to Rolling Smoke is their staff wasn’t very good and you could see them struggle with filling orders. The owner/​manager was on top of things, but he has his work cut out in training the staff to have a good system. It was a little uncomfortable to watch his employees struggle. They got it done, however!
The parking lot where they sell the ‘cue is kind of not that nice, so we went into the historic area for a picnic. There are so many picnic table options in Harper’s Ferry that I would strongly recommend trying one out.
Anyways, if you are in the area this is A+ 5-​star awesome barbecue, as judged by a Southern boy from Alabama/​Carolinas/​Louisiana/​Texas. This is right there with any of those places.
They even accept credit cards.

My husband wasn’t a huge fan but I thought it was really good! The sauce and topping was delicious and sweet. Potato salad was amazing as well as macaroni and cheese. The Mac had a strong onion flavor but my kids and I loved it! Very original. I would recommend stopping here and I am glad we did.

The best BBQ and mac and cheese ever! Definitely worth the stop! Fair prices and generous amounts. I go as often as I can!

Great BBQ! Love the smokey flavor of the meat. Definitely some of the best brisket, I’ve had and I’m normally not a brisket fan. The purple mango slaw was a nice touch as well.

Stopped by here after a day at River Riders, at the suggestion of our guide Kate. The food was good, I really enjoyed the smoked mac & cheese.

You know that old saying, «good things come to those who wait»? This place is a perfect example. There’s a 2 man crew running the smoker and the cash register, but that’s cool because that meat needs to take it’s sweet, sweet time.
I had the pulled pork sandwich and my boyfriend had the brisket sandwich and both were phenomenal. Their BBQ sauce is PERFECT. It’s not runny like Carolina BBQ sauce — it’s the perfect consistency matched with the perfect amount of sweetness and tang, ending with a little bit of spice. Not enough to call it spice but juuuuuust enough to give it that little somethin’ somethin’. I would buy 10 bottles if they sold it there. They were just cooking up a new batch of the smoked Mac and cheese — I wish I had waited for it — but the potato salad was tasty.
If you’ve just finished a day on the river and are starving like we were, hit this place up. You will not be disappointed.

This place was just what I needed after white water tubing with River Riders. My friend got the pulled pork and loved it. I had the ribs which were pretty great. These aren’t the type where one bite pulls all the meat off the bone, these hold together a bit better but that doesn’t mean they weren’t delicious!
But wait a minute… that bbq sauce… omg the sauce was to die for. The secret winner at this place is the smoked Macaroni and Cheese. WOW. AMAZING. I also loved but LOVED the potato salad. All in all, this place was delicious. Can’t wait to head back to WV so I can grab some roadside BBQ.
