Gwen & Franny’s Fried Chicken

Their chicken is the best. No doubt about it.
We love it. Hot, moist meat, crispy crust. Just the right seasoning, not too salty.
Can’t get any better.

Went for lunch today with my two friends from Florida. All three of us raised on good southern food and we loved this place. Friendly and nice staff. The food is fresh ad cooked tonorder. Chicken was yummy, fresh hot, crispy and tangy. and get the collards.

So we read dozen or so reviews and quickly headed over looking forward to the chicken and mac and cheese. But we were soon very disappointed in everything we ordered but the sweet tea. The BBQ sandwich was the worst mush I’ve tasted and the chicken tenders were straight from a gas station. The people were great, but the food was very bad.

Took the family on a picnic and decided to order fried chicken from Gwen and Franny’s. I called in the order as everything there is fresh and cooked to order. It was ready to go when I got there and all the ladies there are so friendly and sweet. The food was so delicious. The chicken was great; so hot juicy and crispy. The collards were so good also! I think they added sugar to them. All in all one of my favorite places for fried chicken.

Fried chicken that was crispy and perfectly seasoned. Collard greens were exceptional with hint of sweetness to them, the mac and cheese was perfectly cheesy. Home-​brewed sweet tea.
Some great desserts on the menu but we were too full for them instead we walked out with a beautiful red Gwen and Franny’s t-​shirt.

Great southern fried food! make sure you are friendly to the staff, they deserve it! the Hushpuppies and fried shrimp were my favorites. come hungry!!!

We did enter with 14 people, so we expected a bit of a wait. However, this review excludes that.
Their smiling faces made me want to order more. Frances was a gem! The food came out hot and fresh. The other reviews were dead on about the MAC N CHEESE, quite possibly the best I’ve had. Uniquely seasoned, moist and delicious! I ate several pieces of the FRIED CHICKEN until I could eat no more. Somehow, I was not left with a greasy filled belly feeling. It was tasty and well cooked. Tasty, but not the best ever. The MASHED POTATOES and gravy were good but reminded me of KFC. The CORNBREAD was ok, as were the GREEN BEANS, RED RICE AND BEANS, and PEACH COBBLER. The RIBS were also good, but in a short time I will forget them.
The location is very quaint and easily missed. If you can’t find it, it is not a loss of experience. I love food and new experiences, so it is unfortunate this was our take on this Unilocal location. As I left I was in a curious spot. It was so highly rated, a lot of reviews for this little town, so what did I miss? Nothing I think. I still love my fellow Unilocalers-​this is my first anomaly.

Found this place on Unilocal.it had good reviews so while passing through South Carolina my husband and I stopped in. I have to say we were very pleased. the chicken was very good, people friendly. I would recommend for anyone to try this place.

Well, the food was five stars. Waiting for 45 minutes for it to go order for only two people cost them one star. Ordering collard greens and getting fried okra cost them another star. I feel I’m being generous by still giving them three stars. The food was amazing though.

We always stop here on our way down South. The food is fabulous. The friend chicken is crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside with a perfect blend of spices. The collards are delicious as well. We call ahead when we’re about half an hour north and its steaming hot and ready when we arrive. Yummy!

On our way north from FL and the craving for fried chicken was taking over our minds.

The place is small but everything else is mighty.
Best fried chicken, mac n cheese was amazing and Coke slaw is creamy. Can’t wait to go back.

I rated only the food, ⁵⁄₅. I had fried chicken, Mac & cheese, and string beans. We ate there. A place shouldn’t call themselves a «soul’ restaurant if the Mac & Cheese isn’t «KICKIN». This places Mac & Cheese makes you start humming one of those old gospel songs that you forgot you knew. Lol! This is not KFC, thank you God, and the fired chicken is cooked after your order is placed so be patient and have a conversation with your dining companions or anyone else in the place. This is Jasper County and just about everyone knows each other or there families and strangers are welcomed, naturally.
I now live out of state and can’t figure out why I hadn’t found this place before on one of my many trips home. I’m coming back soon to try the fried fish (Whiting). Fried gizzards and livers are on the menu also and I have not seen that anywhere.recently. Sort of unhealthy, I know, but I’m on vacation still. Lol
If you start rating other things besides the food your rating will probably go down. There are no fancy tables and chairs or fancy ordering system. There was 1 young teen taking orders, bringing the drinks and orders to the tables in styrofoam containers. She did and excellent job too. It’s a very small, family run business. I saw signs saying they take charge cards. We paid cash. They may have a bathroom but I couldn’t figure out where it would be. As I said, if good food is all you want, this is it– no frills but delicious.

Waited for over an hour waiting for our order. Several people who came after us got their food before us. When we asked about it they said they thought they brought it out already. Really slow service. They should use a number system to keep track of the orders so this doesn’t happen. They did come out to apologize for the mix-​up with our order taking so long. The ribs were very good. Don’t think I would recommend this place though.

We wanted the «real thing» fried chicken on our last day in South Carolina and we found it here!
Unassuming and nothing fancy this little spot turns out some seriously good food! The girl who took our order was super sweet. We had the 4 piece chicken with baked beans side. Best baked beans I ever had and fried chicken too! THE BEST! Came with rolls too which I didn’t try because I didn’t want to waste room in my belly. I wish we were more hungry because I would have wanted to try so many other things. Will be back when we return to visit family next year!

Not far off of I95, right before crossing into Georgia, this delightful little soul food restaurant should not be missed! The women behind the counter could not have been more delightful. Love that southern hospitality! The food was outstanding. We all had the green beans side. There was something extra tasty about them and the mac and cheese was also extra special. What was that extra flavor? Two of us had the baked chicken — it was juicy and flavorful. The bbq ribs were fall-​off-​the-​bone good! Food is served on paper plates with rolls of paper towels on each table-​casual but clean and friendly! I’ll make it point to get there again next time we’re driving by!

There are two ways to find this place, really: stumble on it or scour an electronic map for fried chicken places :) i was hoping for a more authentic experience than some of the higher end Savannah places that serve fried chicken, and I was most certainly not going to stand in line for an hour and a half at Mrs Wilkes.
So I came here instead. Honest and no frills, and you get the impression the place has been there as long as the state of Georgia. They seemed to know a lot of their customers and were very kind and friendly to me, who stuck out like a sort thumb to be sure.
The fried chicken was fantastic. Crispy and juice and salty — delicious, wow. The fries were decent as well. I’m kicking myself for not trying more side dishes, but everything I did have was top notch. A comfortable five stars for this place. I will be coming back, however long a detour that takes.

Wow! I am so glad I discovered this place! Gwen & Franny’s has some of the best Southern/​Soul Food I have ever tried. The Fried Chicken was perfectly tender, juicy, and crispy, the Collard Greens were extremely flavorful, the Mac and Cheese was very cheesy and lightly sweet, and the corn bread was buttery and flakey. This place is a must try and the type of place I would go out of my way to visit again.

Loved the ribs even more than the chicken. The candied yams and crab cakes were also amazing.
Value was incredible as was the service — super friendly staff.
One warning: You will get fat eating here.
