They had a decent selection of surf clothes for both men and women. The reason for the two star rating was because of the overweight sales girl who was rude and tossed my bag on the counter as my friend came by and we both stood there shocked and she then smirked. No hello and no thank you. This was today at around noon. She must’ve thought I was a tourist that she could act that way. Lame. I shoulda just went across the street to get the same thing at the competitor which actually had a better selection of merchandise and the staff there was friendly.

my husband and I took beginner surf lessons with Masaijah Lani, a pro surfer who works with Russell Lewis, a well-known pro surfer who has taught most of the pro surfers coming out of Kauai, including Bethany Hamilton. Masaijah(Moose) was a really good teacher — calm, encouraging, clear, kept direction simple. He wanted us to succeed and we had a great time. I got up on the board almost every time and rode a few waves the entire way to the beach. I am generally scared of the ocean and I felt comfortable and safe. He is a natural teacher. Would highly recommend a ninety-minute lesson with«Moose» — in fact, ask for him!

My wife and I always come here when on Kauai. They’ve always got some fun local surf attire and some other just fun stuff you won’t find anywhere else. The staff is great too.

I’m giving it 3 stars because I don’t think this place has anything special. It’s a surf shop mostly focused on selling clothes. They do rent boards, long or short, and from what I saw, they had a decent amount of short boards.

Love this place. Been coming here since I was in high school. Cutest surf clothes, dresses, bikinis, etc. Love it.

Great friendly shop. When they were out of the size of a shirt my husband wanted, they told us to call back in 2 weeks and they would ship it to us back on the mainland using the cheapest shipping method possible.

Looking for some hard to find surf gear? You can pretty much find a variety and ‘hard to finds’ at «Backdoor». I’ve been a regular here for quite some time now, possibly because my dad works right up stairs, but that aside, this surf shop(not comparing to any others) is a nicely stocked one. From Menswear to the little keiki, everyone’s covered(except for pets I believe). On Kauai, it’s hard to find some brands at the five«well-known» stores, therefore you may just find it here(RVCA, Juicy Couture, yoga apparel). I’m guessing that this is where all of the North Shore Girls(aka«NSG’s») get their yoga pants, the ‘in’ thing on Kauai up north. The location is great, right in the heart of Hanalei town where your last stops should take place before your venture to and from the beach. Service is standardly okay, but I’m sure you’ll find your way around just fine. I can’t stress how well stocked this store is, the’ve got many sizes and a nice selection of styles that are sometimes hard to find on the island or in your major surf stores(i.e. T&C, Blue Hawaii Surf, etc.). Head on over! Oh, Kama’aina… show them your Hawai’i ID and receive an automatic 10% OFF discount… EVERYTIME you go there! what a deal!
