Authentic market in Hamtramck. We stopped in to get some Polish smoked sausage and cheese to take as appetizers to a party. The young woman who waited on us was knowledgeable, friendly and very willing to offer her suggestions to us – who really knew nothing. Everyone who walked in seemed to be regulars, besides us, and I loved feeling like for a moment I was part of this special community of buoyant, friendly people.

**This review is only for their pierogies — I haven’t been to the actual store yet. A new friend of mine lives in Hamtramck, and he sent me a picture of their pierogie menu(they have like 10+ varieties! Wow) and asked if I wanted any from Srodek’s. I chose mushroom, cherry, sweet potato, and potato/garlic/chives. At the time of this writing, I haven’t tried the cherry or the mushroom yet, but the sweet potato and the potato + garlic were both delicious. I fried them up on my stove in some olive oil, and just had some of them for lunch today, actually. Looking forward to trying out more pierogie varieties from Srodek’s, and maybe visiting the main location at some point too.

Whenever in Hamtramck I enjoy stopping at Shrodeks Market they always have a great selection of all of your polish favorites. Homemade pierogies homemade kishka and some of the best horseradish you will ever taste and oh by the way the horseradish is homemade. They also have almost anything you’re looking for in the way of Polish food quite a few different sausages as well as spicy Hunter sausage and regular I prefer the spicy because it’s got just the right amount of the zip in it. As an added bonus they also make a ghost pepper sausage it’s very hot but just hot enough. When in Hamtramck make sure you stop at Shrodeks for the freshest pierogies in town.

Excellent kovbasa, fresh and smoked. They also make their own kishka unlike other shops that stock commercial products. The prices are very reasonable as well. Staff is always friendly and they even keep Sunday hours so I can stop by after church!

Yummmmmmm… Home… Memories… The smells… Aaahhh… Old Hamtramck! What a treat to visit on Sunday. I come for the zimne nogi… and got a few other things as well. Some Dearborn franks, and some Krakus Raspberry syrup. Lovely service… I’m excited to be working in the area for the next couple of weeks so I can visit again and again and again and again and aga…

Had a bunch of sausages and stuffed cabbages delivered all the way down to SC in the hottest christmas weather we ever had and everything showed up still frozen and cold. Everything tasted just as I remembered it did when my grandma made them! You would be making a mistake getting your Polish food anywhere else! Abe Froman, the sausage king of Chicago has NOTHING on Srodek’s!!!

There’s very few classic Polish markets left in Hamtramck. Kopytko is gone among others and Srodeks is about the last one standing. They do it about as well as anyone around town. I’ll put their pierogi up against Polish market any day. I’m not entirely sure why Randy G felt the need to talk about tongue-in-jelly or head cheese or any seemingly odd european delicacy during Easter. This is a Polish Market which encompasses all things Poland not just a few delicacies. The Polish Easter is not terribly complex. On good Friday, meat is forbidden entirely amongst Catholics and so Polish Catholics, 90% of all Polish people, stock up on fish, notably Sledzia, as well as Pierogi, and Kulkelka(egg bread.) On Easter Sunday, the big feast occurs which is typically ham, sausage, usually either smoked or fresh Kielbasa or both and some dairy items. Pierogi are almost always sold by the dozen, Kielbasa by the link or half link, Kulkelka by the loaf, czarnina by the quart. They also sell imported jams, jellies, crackers, dairy, grocery items, and homemade soups including Czarnina and Dill Pickel soup. You’ll find it convenient and the staff is very nice. What makes this place truly special is the huge variety of pierogis they carry. The dozen and a half or so varieties is dizzying. They’re sold in many stores throughout the Detroit area and into Toledo and they ship anywhere which is very, very cool! Their prices are a tad higher than others but well worth it! If you’re in the market for authentic old world Polish goods, it doesn’t get much more authentic than this! Dziekuje…

Greatest Place to get Perogi’s. We travel from Cleveland, Ohio to get the best homemade Perogi’s. Sure, we have them locally, made by Grandma’s for local churches and a few commercial places, but we still come back to stock up on the«good stuff!». We come back to Cleveland with a cooler filled of Perogi’s and Potato Pancakes and ration them until we come back to restock, oh yeah, and visit my folks too. Yumm! Thank you for another reason to come home!

Hard to find a better place in Hamtramck. I’ve never had anything from this place I didn’t like. Their kielbasa has great flavor without being at all greasy. Amazing selection of pierogi. Even their store-made spicy mustard rocks! They make their own sauerkraut, so you can just ask for however much you want and they’ll go in back, scoop it out and weigh it up. Wonderful family operation.

Super authentic, super high quality. They have jellied pigs feet for Pete’s sake… We bought sausage and perogies. It isn’t cheap but it is worth it.

Srodek’s reminds me of a shop that would have existed when my great grandmother was a girl growing up in Hamtramck. It’s not big, it’s not fancy, but it is definitely authentic. My father is a fan of their headcheeses, although they are not really my preference. I do enjoy their other products, however. The grocery and beverage selections are limited, but that’s okay because you really are here for the meats. On myvisit, I saw that prices are good and the staff is attentive, so give them a try the next time you are in the mood for some tasty and authentic Polish meat products.

Awesome & truly a Detroit(Hamtramck) institution! Has anyone mentioned that you can order online? Every year about this time, I send my brother in Florida a «Hamtramck care package» of select Srodek pierogie’s, meats and accompaniments; being able to do it online has just made it so much easier, :). I’ll still visit the store for my own private pierogie/kielbasa stash though, ;). These are good people and this is the real deal folks, :).

Love this place! They have wonderful, authentic, Polish, pierogies and so many different kinds to choose from! Eating pierogies from Srodek’s, is like eating babcia’s(grandmother’s) pierogies when I was a kid . The fresh, raw kielbasa is also great! Boil it for about 40 minutes with an onion cut up in the water, and it turns out so wonderful! I just love eating the Hunter’s Sausage. I often find myself eating a bit of it here and there as a snack throughout the day. Mmmm, Yum! Also, just a side note: You know it’s gonna be real authentic polish food when everyone in the store is speaking fluent polish.

Amazing charcuterie! The kielbasa(pork or veal) is lean, deliciously smoked, has NO gristle, the ribs are great! I am not Polish, so many things are foreign to me, but everything that I have tried here is of excellent quality.

Polish Market is good. Bozeks is simply alright but Srodek’s is the best Hamtramck has to offer! Let’s start with meat. First all meat is smoked and processed on-site. Nothing is trucked in or farmed out. The kielbasa is sold so frequently, that chances are the rings hanging in front of you are no more than 24 hours old. These people move product and therefore product is fresh. I prefer the beef, pork and veal chunky to the fine ground but you just can’t lose. Try the bacon here. It includes the rib cut as well so it is a two-fer. Hunter’s snack sticks are very good and not greasy like a slim jim. I prefer the fresh to the dried sticks. In the deli case, look for their different deli roll luncheon meats that are better than anything else they sell, except for the Krakowska. The sell Dearborn brand deli meats as well. We had Rodney Srodek smoke 50 pounds of pork shoulders for our company picnic and they were perfect. You’ll like the wide variety of pierogi they sell and they are all good. I’m a purist so I stick to kraut. I like the potato dumplings, kopytka, from here. Also the fruit crepes, nalesniki, is good too. I prefer the blueberry to the cherry. Get crazy and try the Srodek’s brand of in-house items such as the kraut and pickles that they ferment, as well as the super hot horseradish. Look in their freezer section for soups. Finally, the sell the best kishka that you will find anywhere in the U.S. Better than Chicago, Milwaukee or Pittsburgh Polish markets. The market is small but the heart is huge here. Family owned and operated for over 60 years. The Srodeks are servants to the community here in Hamtramck as well as around the Metro area. IMPORTANTNOTES a) Avoid the lines during the busy seasons such as Christmas and Easter by placing your order online. They will have it ready for you when you pick up. Avoid the 3 hour wait times completely. If you know what you want, order it this way and at no extra charge. b) If you only come down to Hamtramck once or twice a year and you are buying in bulk, ask them to vacuum seal your kielbasa so that it last considerably longer in the freezer. No extra charge.

Next stop on our Bizarre Foods tour of Detroit was for head cheese. I never had the opportunity to try it or even see it until this episode, so you can imagine my excitement. I was surprised to see how long the line was in this little grocery store on a week day in the middle of the day. It was the week before Easter which probably contributed. Therefore, if you’re going before a holiday, plan for a 30 – 45 minute wait. We tried so many things here and some others we wanted, but you have to purchase in larger quantities than we wanted. We wanted to try the pigs feet in jelly, but you have to purchase by the pound and frankly, I really didn’t want to commit to that much, just a slice. Maybe next time. Moving onto something we did try, we started with the Tongue in Jelly. It had the great nice soft and tender texture of tongue, but the jelly in this case, really didn’t add to anything other than the slimy jelly texture. Even though it wasn’t my favorite, I still appreciate the uniqueness and preservation of still serving this cut from years past. There were two types of Head Cheese we sampled, regular and hot. Truth be told, I was expecting some rare flavors, gelatinous textures, and probably an overall disappointing experience on this. WRONG! See, never judge a book by its cover. It was far from my misconception. You could not tell that it was from the head, snout, and any other part of the pig that you typically don’t think you eat. As a whole, it really wasn’t far off from salami. YEAH, SALAMI! What a shocker, I know. Even with the jelly filling around the meat, you really don’t get that jelly texture like the tongue. Between the regular and the hot, I would rather eat the hot version. Not that it was spicy, not at all actually, but the little extra spiciness, delivers a little more flavor than the regular. The regular is a similar to a very mild form of salami and its the hot version that really brings the flavors to light. The smoked liver sausage was worth getting. It had the nice liver flavor, yet the slice wasn’t mushy in any way like chopped liver. It is closer to a soft bologna in texture, but not in flavor. Only one organ has such a unique flavor and it doesn’t matter how you prepare it, you can tell when its liver. Not any different with this sausage. It has a nice smoky hint to it as well. This one is great to try and I would love it on a sandwich. Their hunters sausage, watch out, it’s big. I was expecting a 6″ or 7″ piece. Not here. It’s about two feet long, each piece and one order comes with two pieces. Be prepared. It had a nice snap casing and was a typical hunters meaty sausage inside, but nothing unique other than the size.

I can’t say enough good things about Srodek’s. Not only is the smoked sausage phenomenal, but so are the hunter’s sticks, the fresh kielbasa, the kiszka, the bacon and everything else you might find behind the counter. My grandparents grew up in Hamtramck, and while the store didn’t exist then, absolutely love the kielbasa and pierogi(which they have made from scratch their whole lives.) Their fruit pierogi is phenomenal– as are their specialty pierogi. If you haven’t tried it, get a bag of fresh kraut– way worth the price and delicious with their kielbasa. The beer selection is great– good prices for beers you can’t find very often. The family is spectacular. Rodney, Maggie, Rachel, Jozef and the rest of the family are great people. They go out of their way to make you feel welcome and happy to let you know about their products and their history. They are also huge supporters of the Hamtramck community. I’ve been here on several occasions when the store was almost empty, and times when it took an hour to order a few things. Don’t get discouraged– the wait will be worth it.
