the bread basket has officially closed down for good.

So we were up in the Windy City for business today so on the way back home we stopped in Hammond at the Bread Basket based on the reviews online and because I was in the mood for a sandwich. We get here and the place is not much to look at but it was ok. So I ordered the Un-Burger and it usually would come with chips but they were out so they offered soup instead. Saved me some money because I was going to order a soup anyway. The two soup choices they had were Baked Potato and Broccoli cheese. We got one of each. The potato I could take or leave. But the Broccoli Cheese was really good. The Un-Burger chicken sandwich was just ok. The bread it came on made the sandwich. Some sort of Jalapeño bread. The other person ordered the Almond Chicken and it looked really good and he enjoyed it. Definitely a better sandwich than mine. So they were out of the Red Velvet Brownies so I opted for these coconut bars which were out of this world. I may very well contact them and order a case of those they were that good. I got two other cookies which i have not eaten yet but if they are half as good as those bars then it was worth it. All that said it costed us $ 30 bucks at a sandwich shop. Not sure the price point was worth it. We would go back in the future if in the area.

I always appreciate a good homemade sandwich shop and Bread Basket fits the bill. It’s a small operation of maybe six or seven tables but they were all full throughout my spot. Bread Basket’s menu is simple — sandwich, soup or salad. All three are large so it’s recommended to do the half combo for $ 6.95 if you want more than one item. I went with the almond chicken sandwich and chicken and rice soup for my choice. The sandwich was full of huge chunks of chicken salad, celery and pineapple. I did not taste much almond but the overall flavor of the sandwich was very tasty. The soup hit the spot on this very dreary rainy day. Nice chunks of chicken and spinach throughout. Best of all I was in and out within thirty minutes. Can’t beat that for an express lunch.

This is one of the best sandwich places around! They’ve got the tastiest sandwiches ever! I usually get the Southwest Turkey Sandwich which is always awesome! They make their own bread there so it is always fresh and wonderful! Prices are pretty reasonable. The only gripe I have is that their dine in space is not quite large enough. It is EXTREMELY hard to get a table in there during lunch hour. With the amount of business they have you’d think they’d add some more dining space. And they always have only one waitress who tends to the 6 – 8 tables that they have. She tends to be a little slow in service at times but that’s largely due to the fact that she spready so thinly. If they could change those two things this place would be unstoppable!

The sandwiches are very good, but I was disappointed that even though they have yogurt shakes on the menu, they stopped making them. And to add to my frustration, the Cuban sandwich I wanted, wasn’t available because they ran out of meat. The Turkey Cheddar sandwich I ordered was very good, and my friend said she enjoyed the Portabello sandwich a lot.

Winterish afternoon. Soup and sammich sound wonderful! Never been to this place. And I’m glad I finally tried it! I ordered the bread basket sub and chicken & rice soup. The dining area is cozy and quaint. Waitress was very nice. My tummy is full and warm. :) Definitely will return!

Great place for a sandwich, but don’t expect seating. Very small seating area, but you can probably catch one at 10 or 3. Only open for lunch!

Came in not that long ago as a surprise for my hubby. He grew up in the area and raved about this place. I picked up a sandwich to go and took it to his work. He loved it. What I didn’t love– while waiting and I don’t even know what got the girl started the girl at the counter started a pretty inappropriate conversation with me. She told me how she is dating an older guy and doesn’t want kids… But them went into her intimate issues in the relationship. Very bizarre! I was pretty uncomfortable. So the food is good, I’m sure that girl doesn’t work there anymore(I hope) but if someone starts talking strange let that person know that you are not interested. I don’t know why I let her go on, I think I was baffled. The 3 stars are because of the weird experience. I will come back and update.

This is probably one of the best places for lunch that I have ever gone too. They been here forever and the only downside is they aren’t open more. Clearly it is a family run establishment and they close to have a normal life. They have great bread here and that is what makes the sandwiches so good. The soup is always outstanding. As far as sandwiches and soups go they are one of the best. I’ve never meet a person that doesn’t like this place.

They used goldfish as croutons on the salad. I think that the bread for the sandwich was homemade and was really good. I got the garden sandwich with chicken and would recommend it. Nice staff and high quality food.

Homemade bread and Soup! I am in. Don’t make it up there all that often, but when I do, I ask myself why I don’t try more often. Love the salads, but can’t go wrong with a half sandwich and soup combo on a cold day!

When creating the ultimate universe, it went something like this: water, land, animals, people, Bread Basket. It is heavenly in almost every way. I could list every single item that I adore from this restaurant(and I will share a few) but let me just say… nothing that you order would be wrong here. This small, little hole in the wall was just a lucky find on my part. It definitely gives light to the term«diamond in the rough». hidden by the pot holes of indianapolis blvd. and often overshadowed by the neighboring Schoop’s, those who find this place are in luck. Their hours leave must to be desired(Tuesday-Friday 10am-4pm) sadly, but you know what they said about absence. There are many days that I’m racing from work to make sure that I can pick up a sandwich, salad, and bread for lunch the next day or a light dinner. Their Healthworks sandwich is divine. It’s perfect on the bread with the sprouts and avocado. The Chicken cobb salad is perfect, with the lightest and flavorful blue cheese and divine grilled chicken. Finally – my ultimate favoritie is their soups, partnered with a slice of bread. No butter necessary. The bread is just perfection. It’s soft, it’s a party of flavors in your mouth. Prices are affordable and be prepared to wait for a bit if you just walk in!

I just discovered this place thanks to a friend of mine, and love it. Prices are decent, but the food is outstanding. Be warned, they are only open limited hours during the week so plan your visit accordingly, but everything I have had here(4+ visits) has been great! If you’re in Hammond and hungry(which can be a frightening combo) you definitely need to stop in here.

There are not many options when it comes to dining in Hammond or Gary, Indiana. These smelly industrial cities make it difficult to satisfy ones appetite, or keep it for that matter. When it comes to finding some grub in Hammond, The Bread Basket is a diamond in the rough, rough, rough. They are open Tuesdays though Fridays, 10 am to 4 pm. From the outside it doesn’t look like much, and you may not expect to find outstanding sandwiches, but it’s like finding a pearl in your ugly looking oyster. So, stop in for some soup, a sandwich, or a half sandwich combo if you want a little bit of both. You’ll be pleasantly surprised! If you don’t have a good foundation for your sandwich, then you are setting yourself up for a loss. The breads at The Bread Basket are homemade and delicious. My favorite thus far is the Jalapeño Olive bread. It is worth buying a loaf to bring home for some delicious turkey or breakfast sandwiches. Take my word, would I mislead you? Some days, when I’m feeling a little chemically imbalanced, I actually debate the hour or so drive for a healthy hearty homemade sandwich with fresh ingredients. Now, I don’t actually do it, unless I have a reason to be in that area, but if there’s a reason, you can bet I’m stopping in for some of my favorite sandwiches. *The Panini Grill($ 6.75) is piled up with smoked turkey, Monterey Jack cheese, tomato, & baby spinach, then grilled to perfection on my favorite Jalapeño Olive bread for an extra kick of flavor. *The Grilled Veggie($ 5.75) is perfect when your not feeling up to your carnivore self. Monterey Jack cheese, sprouts, tomato, green pepper, & red onions are filled between two slices of homemade wheat bread and grilled up. You may add avocado for 50 cents extra. Now why wouldn’t you do that? I love me some avocado. Also, a side of ranch is served with the sandwich for your dipping pleasure. I could continue with the other top sandwiches I like, but I don’t want to bore you any more than I already have. You can check out their full menu here: The food is worth 5 stars, but unfortunately every time I have eaten here the service has been slow, even when we’ve only been one of two tables in the restaurant. But don’t let that steer you away, just make sure you’re not in a time crunch when coming in to sit down and eat. What do ya know, something worth going to Hammond, Indiana for.

Oh my heavenly sandwich from God! Go for the Healthworks full of sprouts, avacado, cream cheese, turkey slices, on wheat bread. The homemade soup is a legacy in this family owned restaurant. Dine in or out, they are special and celestial meals cooked and served for over a decade by loving hands. Enjoy a loaf of bread to take home. I can’t get enough of the amzing menu here of sandwiches such as the Reuban, or the beef one, etc. I have to say freshly made meals, are the way to a happy belly with the freshest fruits and vegetables to fill your warm plate. ANd the desserts here need a review of their own that is how marvelous they are made. Praise the Lord! Psalms.
