We have been very happy members of the Guilderland YMCA for six years and have referred several members over the years. Both of our children have gone through the nursery school program and loved it, but this summer, our youngest son was in the 2 year old summer program and was bit by another child on three separate occasions and the school is doing nothing about it. After the second instance, the Director and the Teacher met with my wife and I to discuss our concerns and reassure us that they were confident that this would not be an issue moving forward but they would not consider removing the other child from the class. The third instance occurred yesterday, but the teacher never said anything about it when he was picked up. When our son informed us that he was bit again and my wife questioned the teacher, she reluctantly admitted that it occurred again. We called the corporate office to cancel our membership and remove our son from the school and were told to just send an email. Not a word from anyone, and still no email back. We are extremely disappointed at how this situation was handled and that after 6 year of membership and a tremendous amount of money for both membership and schooling, the Y let us walk out the door rather than address the situation and remove the student, who is new to the Y altogether. I urge other parents with children in the upcoming 3 year old school at the Guilderland Y to reconsider keeping their children in the program as the Director has no plans of removing the biter until he reaches the 4 year old program.

Started out here back in about 2000 when we moved from Cambridge to Altamont. Started going to the Troy Y when we moved up to the Latham area a couple of years later but recently began splitting time between the two locations since it is much closer to my UAlbany Weekend MBA office. This pretty much is the ultimate Y. Plenty of convenient parking, nice big basketball court, large swimming pool, also has a sauna, steam room, and hot tub. The sauna works well but the steam room seems a bit tepid. The steam erupts(very loudly!) for about 5 seconds and then shuts off for a few minutes. I’d like to see more steam, more heat, and, most of all, more consistency. The Y has a three-lane walking track with a bird’s eye view of the hoops court and a spacious workout room with free weights, machines, and cardio equipment nicely spread out. Everything seems well maintained and is in good working condition. The locker room is a bit crowded but that is a testament to the facility’s popularity. If it’s teeming with too many people, I sometimes use the youngsters’ locker room. The lockers are roomy — much more so than at the Troy Y — and there is a hair dryer and a contraption that spins one’s bathing suit mostly dry. The service is pleasant but unremarkable. And there is free coffee in the lobby!

the workout machines are so close to each other that the guy next to me on the elliptical was breathing on me heavier than my spouse in bed. really disgusting. overall, very crowded feels like wherever you are trying to exercise it feels like you’re working out inside a children’s size sleeping bag. poor layout.

With a friendly staff and community of members, clean pool and locker room, the Guilderland Y is my home away from home when I come to visit Albany.
