Three stars for the folks who work the aisles there and for the range of services that are offered for glass, screens etc. The hours stink and don’t help anyone who is working a home project. You can get your project started and when you hit a point where you need more materials or a tool the place has long since closed. Really, closing at one o’clock on the weekends? Also the rental desk which is now under their ownership is not worth using or trusting. Rented a seeder from them that was rigged to not work properly by bolting out the settings that completely wasted my time and money by it’s deliberately rigged malfunction. Also bought a mower there that malfunctioned on its first use. They claimed it was«bad gasoline» the cry of all dishonest workshops. The kicker is that it was using the gas they put in and they charged for the repair on a brand new mower. Don’t leave your cellphone unattended, they kept ours when it was accidentally left behind on the counter.

The hours are terrible and make it hard to shop here is you have a job with regular hours. Aside from that sometimes the staff is sometimes very helpful and other times they are horrible. Asked my wife to go and get an earth anchor, drew a picture and put the dimension on it. She had trouble finding it and asked for help. The Johnson’s guy gave her something you hook your dog up to. I needed something to anchor a shed. I returned the item and bought the right one. When I showed my wife she was impressed with how accurate my drawing and description was, and by how inept the store rep was.

I’ve been going to Johnson’s Hardware for more than 30 years and love that it is still a locally-wned family business with knowledgable employees who can really help you solve whatever problem you might have around the house. The negative reviews are for Taylor Rental, which is next door, as is an unrelated carpet and tile business. I’ve always had pleasant dealings with both of them as well.

Yes, Johnson’s closes early. Groton and the Mystic area are small towns. Not much happens here after 5 anyway. If you really need it after 5, go to Benny’s. Johnson’s will never be accused of being cheap, but it is the best local hardware store I have found. This is where all the locals go, and have since long before there was a Unilocal. If you can’t find it here or Benny’s, it must be impossible to find.

I was wrong, when I went to pick up my mower, it was actually $ 170 not $ 140 as estimated! Not only will I never return there, I will warn friends and family to stay far, far away!

This is an excellent local hardware store where you can buy anything you need for a home project, you can also buy propane, rent tools, etc. An excellent suburbanite store. Large selection of bird seed, lawn decorations, plants, etc. Great knowledgeable staff. So, why the three stars? Their hours, honestly are very inconvenient. I realize that in 1950 it may have made sense to close the hardware store at 5PM, but come on, this is 2010! Their hours are: Open: Monday — Friday, 7 a.m. — 5:30 p.m. Saturday, 8 a.m. — 5 p.m. Sunday, 9 a.m. — 1 p.m. Seeing how Home Depot and Walmart are open until 10 and just a short drive away, other than trying to support a local business, there is little reason to make the extra effort to get there before they close, especially on Sundays. Maybe living in Boston has made me spoiled to having places open late, but this has always annoyed me about this store.
