Spent about an hour one morning here with my kiddos, and we all really enjoyed ourselves. It is off season so only the fort is accessible, but that was okay with us. We read the info they had up about the history of the fort. It was very interesting, and we all learned something from our visit. This is an extremely well preserved battlefield. So glad we found, and explored this little gem. I would love to return when the museum is open.

It was free and had great exhibits in the museum located next to the battle monument. The actual fort located across the street has great views and ramparts of the fort as it was during the Revolution. It is a great experience.

I love this place. I must go back to checkout the gift shop. Family enjoyed the history and beautiful landscape over loving the Thames river. It’s small and everything can be seen in a hour or so. Can’t wait to the«sister» fort across the river: Fort Trumbull.

Highly recommend catching a reenactment here, other than that it’s a rad spot great views and the tours are given by highly knowledgeable staff.

Not big and the British did beat us here, but it is still extremely well preserved. It is one of those places where you can still walk in the foot prints of the forefathers and get the feeling, as slight as it may be, of what it would have been like to live and die here.

History and a great view Fort Griswold State Park is the site of the 1781 massacre of the American troops by Benedict Arnold. It’s high on a hill over looking the Thames River and has earthen walls, stone trenches and tunnels that run throughout the fort. They are fun to crawl through if you are into that sort of thing. A few old cannons are also hanging around. A couple of years ago archeological digs were being done in certain locations. There is no fee to get into the fort but of course donations are accepted. A museum is present on site but perhaps the most impressive part of the park is a 134 feet high stone tower that can be seen from virtually all of Groton. The view from the top is of course spectacular but it is a strenuous hike to get to the top. Sorry, no elevators. Fort Griswold is a nice place for a picnic or to learn some history. On the 4th of July it becomes extremely crowed because it is a great place to watch the fireworks over the Thames River.
