For starters they only take check or cash. I found this odd. I wanted to order an egg white omelet, but the waitress informed me that they don’t serve egg whites because of the chicken shortage? Ordered a chicken breast sandwich and wanted to substitute cottage cheese for fries. They don’t have cottage cheese. Sandwich was good, but chicken breast couldn’t have been more than 3 ounces. Service was good and food came out fast, but the overall experience was just plain odd.

I stopped in here for breakfast on a Friday in October. They are only open for breakfast and lunch, so it has taken me quite a while to fit it into my schedule as I am usually at work or sleeping-in when they’re open. They only accept cash and personal checks. I find that so absurdly irritating in 2015. Who still takes personal checks in 2015? Who doesn’t take debit/credit cards in 2015? Is the owner just that darn cheap? Does the 2% merchant fee just scare him off? If he raised the cost of his entrées by maybe a dime then that should cover what it costs him to accept credit cards. Wake up and smell the 21st century, Billy. Food is good. It’s not superb, but it’s your typical café fare. Eggs, pancakes, hash browns, bacon, sausage, omelets, and so forth. They do a good job serving up breakfast and at a pretty decent price. I had the«Billy’s Combo» and the biscuits and gravy were good. Service is friendly. I was a little annoyed when I walked in because I was just standing there being stared at by their clientèle for an awkwardly long period of time before a waitress told me to sit anywhere. The«Please Seat Yourself» sign was in a corner and turned around backwards. This strip mall unit was formerly home to D & K’s Gretna Café(which played musical locations in Gretna trying to keep itself afloat) and before that was a Sam & Louie’s New York Pizzeria. It still has the same floors, tables, chairs, and booths that Sam & Louie’s did. That gives it sort of an interesting look for a café.

A couple of Husker fans from California, we were on our way to the Stategic Air Museum in Ashland on Sunday morning. We both love the locals cafes and stay away from the«big chain» restaurants, ala Denny’s, Perkins, IHOP, etc. We came upon Billy’s by accident and decided to give it a try. It was so homey and everyone on the staff was so friendly, just as I remember the good folks of Nebraska to be. I had sausage patties and eggs and it was awesome. I love sausage patties and these were pretty substantial. The coffee was hot and plentiful. My friend had french toast with bacon and she really loved it. The place was filled with locals as many people seemed to know each other. As someone who spent most of their career in the restaurant business, I can honestly say that where ever the locals eat is the place to go. Because in a small community like Gretna, bad food or bad restaurants gets around fast. It was a very nice experience. Thanks, Billy’s Gretna Café.

Came in for breakfast, and so glad I did! Food was hot, fresh, tasty, lightning fast, and very reasonably priced. Service was great. Only complaint is the coffee was really weak, and since I like my coffee on the mild weaker side of things, that’s really saying something. Still, highly recommended! Just make sure you bring cash or a check as they don’t take cards.

Sometimes you just need a home style diner breakfast. This is the place to go! Friendly staff, quick service, and delicious food! I would definitely come back here!

Went for the first time this morning based on a recommendation. We both ordered a breakfast skillet to go and they were delicious. VERY reasonably priced! The short time I was in the diner I noticed it was clean, organized and the staff was super friendly. They do only accept cash or checks, and there isn’t an ATM inside so make sure you’re prepared for that. And also, they are only open for breakfast and lunch. Those are the only reasons I didn’t give them 5 stars. Food wise though… delicious!!!
