Love this place! I am living in GR and grew up in the suburbs of philly and this is the best I have found in the area :) they use the authentic Amoroso rolls from Philadelphia… my favorite!!! You cannot make a good cheesesteak without them. I come here all the time and sometimes I just buy a 6 pack of rolls to take home

The Food seems to be pretty tasty, but doesn’t always agree with me the next day. I didn’t care for the person that worked behind the counter, either.

Great tasting fries an I would say that the cheese steak has the potential to be very good. But unfortunately the restaurant charges extra for everything from the cheese, onions, peppers etc. by the time you add and pay for each condiment, my bill for a sandwich, fries and a drink was close to $ 15.00. I can imagine ever being able to afford to each there daily.

Eh. It was okay. I had the classic jersey style with mushrooms and onions. It reminded me of Steakums. The same shredded steak product that everyone touts as premium steak sandwich filler. Full size the total came to $ 9. Not bad for the amount of steak in the hoagie bun. It was incredibly dry and needed a not so healthy slap of mayo. As a side I hit the salad bar. Mine consisted of a small spinach salad, peas, cheese, onion, ranch, a small scoop of Greek pasta salad, and a small scoop of meatballs an cold ravioli. As it is measured by weight That brought my grand total to $ 18? Shock me, shock me, shock me. I would stop by again, but I would keep it incredibly simple. The two star rating is primarily set for the overall layout and cleanliness of the restaurant and the fact that the tables were uncomfortable and not really family/group friendly. We had three kids and two baby carriers and no where to set them.

My cheese steak was not very good. Not enough cheese or meat and the steak was over cooked. For being there signature item it lacked any type of wow factor. I will probably never come back to this place.

We have been wanting to try this place for awhile. Had an Entertainment Book coupon we wanted to use. We were immediately told they don’t accept the coupon.($ 5. off a sandwich with purchase of same). When I asked why, the cashier told me because it was put in the book without knowledge of the owner. Really? Then, they had a sign for a lunch special. ½ a sandwich and soup or half order of fries for $ 7. When asked for soup the cashier told us they didn’t have any soup. It was a slow day and they didn’t make any that day. Again… really? The walls had all sorts of white patching of holes, but they never bothered to repaint over them. There was only one other customer in the place at lunchtime. I do agree with the other posts that the fries were good. That is the only saving grace of this experience. Don’t bother going here. Many other happy places to pick from downtown with better food and service!

Worst service experience I’ve had in my life. So bad I’m writing a review on Unilocal!Avoid avoid avoid. I had to ask for napkins and the guy from the kitchen yelled back and said they come out with the food. I had made a salad at the salad bar and had my food. And whoever is working the cash register at 2:25PM on Thursday, August 6 should never represent a company and work directly with customers. I have never had someone talk to me as a customer in such a disgusted and foul way. Never coming back.

If you like your steak dripping with grease with delicious cheese whiz, this is the sandwich for you. Does this place remind me of my time in Philly, no but pretty darn close. I ordered my cheesesteak with onions, and it was perfect.

The overall experience of Fat Johnny’s is pretty mediocre. I ordered a cheese steak, jersey style(white american and provolone instead of cheez wiz), and some fries. The first problem I had was that they charge extra for things like onions and sweet peppers, things that are free anywhere else, and it felt like they were nickel and dimeing me for having the audacity to want something more than meat and cheese on my sandwich. The meat in my sandwich was kind of dry and pretty bland, and the bread just wasn’t appetizing. The sandwich was serviceable, but hardly anything that a place that supposedly specializes in cheese steaks should be serving. The fries however where great, they were delicious and perfectly crispy, plus they came in a good size. But the fries weren’t enough to save it for me, and I wouldn’t recommend this place, and I won’t be back. I originally went to Fat Johnny’s because I was attending GR8bit Live at the DeVos Place and I wanted something quick and cheap that wasn’t the crappy overpriced convention hall food, but given the choice between Fat Johnny’s and the convention hall food, I’d probably just stay at the DeVos Place.

Convent location and clean inside. Our service was lack luster and the person working the register acted like she didn’t want be there. The fries were really good, fresh cut. The Philly itself was really good and best I’ve had in GR, only wish they would warm the bread, and it would have set it over the top. If the service was better, this place would be a 4⁄5 star. I would try again hoping for better service.

Came in for Saturday lunch, a few other people seated, food arrived fast after ordering. Staff were really friendly. Got the Jersey style cheesesteak and Cajun fries. Bun was light and flaky and steak was delicious and had a unique flavor. Cajun fries were awesome and come with a kick! Would like to have the option of adding steak sauce, but will be back nonetheless!

If you like to hold your beef in your hand, then head over to Fat Johnny’s Cheesesteaks(95 Monroe Center) in downtown Grand Rapids. Owner Dan Weiskopf has done everything with food, from catering to vending machines. One thing that was missing was cheesesteaks, that East Coast symphony of grizzle and goo. Fat Johnny’s is the real deal. The Amorosa rolls are imported from South Philly. CRUSTYon the outside and soft in the middle like Free Market. Said Weiskopf, «Bread is a real problem in West Michigan.» When ordering a cheesesteak you have but one decision, besides deciding your next of kin. Do you want Jersey style which is served with white American cheese or Provolone if you are from Ada. Or you can get your meat torpedo Philly style slathered with Cheez Whiz. «We only use real Cheez Whiz from Kraft,» he said. «It’s got the right saltiness and viscosity.» If you are a vegetarian, Fat Johnny’s has turkey Reubens, chicken and waffles, and a salad bar.

Downtown for Art prize and the kids were begging for Jimmy John’s. We are more into local joints so I thought we would give Fat Johnny’s a try. Delicious! We shared a Phill style cheesesteak and a Gyro sub. The Gyro sub was good but not spectacular but the marinated veggies it comes with were stellar. The cheesesteak was the biggest hit. Juicy without being too greasy and the perfect size bun. An order of fries is big enough for 2 or more to split. We got the garlic fries… yum!

I have a had a few sandwiches here and they are ok, but nothing stellar. I find them to be a bit dry, overpriced, and unless you order extra meat(did I say overpriced) the sandwiches seem skimpy. Lots of bread, less meat, no mayo or sauce. Even if you order it with a cheese selection it still ends up a bit wanting. However, My biggest complaint is about their fries. A Terrible Soggy mess! The portions are sized for a Grizzly bear, serves maybe 2, 3 or 4 people. Come on, I just want a side of fries that I can afford and that I would actually want to eat. I think I paid $ 3 for my sloppy pike and could only eat 2 fries before pitching them in the trash. But honestly, an establishment like this should get fries right — instead they are an epic fail — Bland,(did I say soggy), pile of wet star. I would recommend that the owners of fat Johnny’s go try the fries over at the Fish Lads at the downtown market to see how to do fries right.

Decent selection on the salad bar, wouldn’t mind some fruit added to it though. Lots of my coworkers have had the sandwiches & said they are addicting — the chicken cheese steak is next on my list! They just opened some come down & support local!
