Just stopped for lunch at the Gun Flint Bar and Tavern in Grand Marais on our way to Canada for Super Bowl Sunday. Doesn’t everyone leave the country for Super Bowl? My tummy is happy as I ordered the house-brewed Porter… I’m a dark beer gal… and and a spiced version of split green pea soup and endless salad. The soup exceeded my expectations… it was not puréed, but had chunks of peas and carrots. Carman, our server, was most gracious when I asked for the soup to be heated. Nobody enjoys lukewarm soup. Do they? Well, maybe the gazpacho guys… The salad featured a spring mix of lettuces with tomatoes and cucumber arranged on the edge of the bowl… yes, a bowl, not a plate. I chose their version of a buttermilk ranch dressing and I made the right choice! Feels like I hit a home run!

Good place for family dinner, especially if family dinner requires a good selection of booze. Section on menu for«ethnic» food. Questionable subheading but good fajitas. Sometimes there is live music. Enough of a selection to satisfy many tastes. Wait staff is very friendly.

Pulled in here in Friday night of busy MEA weekend. Wait was short but it was hopping. Good beer selection including their own brews. Casual atmosphere, wide menu. Turkey Rachel for me — big and made with real roasted turkey meat. I didn’t care for the blue chips with sauce. Special was a baked sausage ziti. Good and generous with the sausage. I’d go back! Downside: Kids menu was very limited and had little twists, which must kids don’t like(had 3 items and didn’t include classic items) which was a challenge.

Wife and I ate here 2 nights in Grand Marais, busy bar and restaurant setting. The food was very good, the staff a little overwhelmed with how busy it was. The rice bowl was excellent.

We were exploring Grand Marais and this place has a great location. We were able to sit down right away but it took a while for a server to arrive with menus, and then we sat… and sat. When she finally came back for our drink orders we decided to for-go drinks altogether and just order our sandwiches. And then we sat, and sat, and sat some more. Our server never checked in with us while we waited, then when food was finally dropped off-she never checked back with us. However after we flagged her down for the check she was practically hovering. All in all the food was fine, but the service was poor.

I’ve been here twice. First time in 2011 and the other time was in 2013. Both times were after a kayaking trip at Isle Royale. Great food, great selection of beers and great atmosphere. Not going to find a place this good in any small little town in Minnesota. Wonderful place to end a 2 week long trip on the island.

Loved it! Fast service, great beer selection, and a wise cracking bartender. Loved the upstairs deck for the lake view, too.

Food was average, service was terrible. Hostess and our server both appeared to be strung out on something. Multiple reminders of what we ordered and even the fact that we had ordered were needed. Bartender didn’t know how to make what we ordered and appeared quite confused. I’d pass on this place in the future.

Great food and drinks! We had the jalapeño quesadilla and french onion soup! It was amazing! And the blue corn chips and sauce are a must! The beer is just as good, they brew there own! For a night cap we went onto the roof and listened to some wonderful life music and drank some cold brews while looking over Lake Superior. Couldn’t ask for a better vacation night!

I’m a long time vegetarian and definitely enjoy their chili! The other veggie options are descent, but food is a little overpriced, especial considering the internal ambience. Service was okay, but certainly not super thoughtful or attentive. A large menu option for groups though!

Popular spot in Grand Marais to grab a cocktail after some outdoor activities or if your just passing through! They don’t have much competition though. To be honest I’m not sure if they have any competition… It’s the only bar I have ever been to while up in Grand Marais. Regardless, it’s a fun spot. They have a rooftop you can have a drink up in and look out into the bay. I can’t attest for the food because I’ve never actually eaten there but their Bloody Mary’s are fantastic! The bloody mix is spicy and the drink is fully garnished shrimp and all! They have a good beer selection with even a local beer on tap. The service was great and the place had a great atmosphere. We stop here every time on our way up to the cabin.

Stopped in to this place to watch the women’s world cup final. It’s a nice place, as others have noted it’s a bit overpriced but Grand Marais is a tourist location so you can’t blame them. The food seemed fine, I got the Cuban and it had plenty of PICKLES so no complaints there. The menu was extensive so I can see where some things would be better than others. Sometimes I think that places that do only a couple things but do them well are better off than places that have everything from mexican food to pizza.

We ordered the walleye filet($ 22) and the Cuban sandwich($ 14). Service was friendly and quick. In-house brewed beers were really good. Food was just ok. Cuban was better than the walleye filet even though the walleye filet was much more expensive. In short: decent food but overpriced.

Location is everything with this place. They have the best location I n Grand Marais and some of the worst food in the town. They try to be good and impressive on the menu but fail to deliver. Eaten here 4 times over the years and horrible food every time. They also have what they call the«Bloody Mary Breakfast» but it does not include a bloody Mary?! Do yourself a favor eat at the crooked spoon down the block then come here for the drinks, this is all they do well they have 2 Bars. The Main bar usually has live music on the weekends, The Raven off to the side is small and seems to be where most the locals hang out… this is where you find me when in town I like the atmosphere down there and the bartenders are always friendly and can pour a mean drink. Also if you like Sangria this place is a must.

Food was good, drinks were great, music was fantastic. It’s too bad it’s 5 hours from my house. I may just make the trip for another Saturday night music, food and cocktail extravaganza again soon. Check it out!

Expect to pay the tourist season prices all year. Food is good but most meals are at least 4 – 5 dollars overpriced. I had the muffuletta which was good but not the 14 dollar good for a bunch of deli meats on an average bun. Wife enjoyed a rice bowl with scallops but again semi overpriced. For sure good tap beer including a few in house brews. Avoid the over priced and overhyped apps, the«potstickers» are just mushroom pan fried raviolli and the blue corn chips have a Siracha mayo blend good for a side but not exactly anything fancy. Overall it is the only decent causal hangout but for a better meal before hand go to the sisters joint

The GFT is always a pleasant surprise. The wings were outstanding! To my surprise, they also had more than the standard Minnesota kick. I then moved on to the stacked enchilada which was great! Awesome beer selection, awesome goofy band, awesome night.

We like this place… but its sort of a forced liking as there really isn’t another viable tavern option nearby. Menu is eclectic but definitely overpriced. Beer selection is fantastic and a 16 oz. glass will set you back $ 5 which is acceptable given its location and lone-wolf status. I tried what I was hoping would be a great bloody Mary that included a big shrimp… it was mild/moderately spicy but otherwise was pretty flavorless(tomato or vodka!) and ran $ 9. The bar itself is nice… full of relaxing mostly middle-aged tourists. We have eaten there before and the food was OK but there are so many other better options around that this is just a spot to relax with a brew now.

Gunflint Tavern will either delight you or disappoint you, depending on what you’re looking for. If you’re looking for good north woods music, a solid variety of beers, and a breathtaking view, you can’t beat the Gunflint Tavern. On a nice summer day, take advantage of their rooftop bar — beautiful. The food is OK, but more than a bit overpriced. I had the special — baked Ziti. Small portion and slightly overdone. Not horrible but not great.
