It’s out of the way, it’s an oddity – this amazing building set in a so-so setting. But stop for awhile and check out the grounds. There is amazing art to be found there(and for purchase). Then stroll inside and see the latest featured artist(s). The volunteers who staff the place really make it shine. I love the house they are located in. It is the Captain James White House. As the story goes, after the War Between the States, Captain James Wilson White returned to his home in Fort Mill, South Carolina, to help run his father’s plantation. Up north in North Carolina, the textile industry was growing in Alamance County, creating an excellent market for cotton. Captain White decided to come to Alamance County to sell his cotton to the mills run by Edwin Michael Holt. While in Alamance County, Captain White met and fell in love with E.M. Holt’s youngest daughter, Emma. The couple married on April 26, 1871. E.M. Holt loved his daughters and didn’t want to see them move away from Alamance County. To keep them near home, he built each one a large house on property he owned on South Main Street in Graham. The house for Emma is what is now considered the Captain James White House. It has a wonderful history, and if you’re as lucky as we were, your host or hostess will share a bit of it with you. They have a gift shop – small but packed with wonderful offerings from ubber talented local artists. It’s a wonderful place to pick up that special gift. Hint to my honey: Valentine’s Day IS approaching… I love that they always seem to be hosting some sort of event there – and we haven’t been disappointed by a one of them. Worth the drive, indeed!
