Nice tequila and margarita list, disappointing menu for vegetarians.
That pretty much sums it up in one sentence. For vegetarian options, they have nothing listed on the menu, really, other than guacamole. I had to ask about my options, was given three very similar choices — mixed vegetables in a taco, enchilada or quesadilla. Their rice is made with chicken stock, so be sure to ask for the white rice. While our meals were good, nothing too outstanding for the price.
The wait staff is fine, but not super attentive. Our water and drink glasses have been known to go empty.
Go for margaritas and guacamole, which are all excellent. Then find another smaller Mexican resturant nearby for your meal.

Delicious and beautifully presented dishes. I love that I can get a spinach/​radish/​fresh veggie sald with my fish tacos. This mex food is not from a microwave. Its made to order and healthy and still satisfying. The guacamole can have pepitas and pomegranite seeds in it and its amazing. Plus the service is always so gracious!

We landed upon this fab restaurant in Glen Allen, VA. It was an amazing experience with wonderful ambience and terrific customer service. We received VIP service and had the opportunity to chat with the outstanding chef Maria Oseguera. Highly recommend the bourbon steak tacos and quesadilla, as well as the margaritas, especially Maria’s Margarita & Sueno de Maya Margarita… muy bueno!

Ok, so this has often been my go to place in short pump for great food, but the service has always been slow. I have accepted this in the past since the food was so good, but after tonight, no more. After 1 hour and 45 minutes of waiting, we finally got food. My food was cold and had clearly been sitting for some time, while my kid’s food was burnt beyond recognition. People who got here after us got served before us and they clearly didn’t have enough waitstaff for the evening. While our waitress was nice, she was overworked and therefore inattentive. After so many years, they still don’t have their act together. No longer worth it. Moving on.

Personally I love Mexican food, and this place was very good! I was a little disappointed that they did not have ground beef tacos but ended up having the goat cheese quesadilla! We ate around 8:00 and there was not many people in there, so it was surprising service was a little slow. It was also strange that they were cleaning the restaurant when it closed in 3 hours, there were chairs turned over and our waiter was cleaning the floor and sweeping and then giving us food, but I am giving it four stars because the food and atmosphere was very good! Our waiter was very nice too!

We recently moved here from Cali. We have been searching for a good Mexican restaurant since we arrived. We found this place and saw the 4 star reviews and decide to give it a try. Bad decision, I went in hungry and left hungry. The portions are very small and the food is not good at all… you have to be dizzier then 2 Tasmanian Devils smoking crack to give this place more then 1 star and even that’s pushing it. Never again.

This place is very stylish on the inside, good waiters. I had a taco salad with steak. The steak is cooked here to absolute perfection! However there was sooooooooooo much cilantro in my salad i couldnt bear to eat it. I couldnt even eat around it. Made me so sad. I wont come here again, although i would like to because of the bangin steak. I just dont trust their seasonings :/

It’s clearly been too long since our last visit. Tonight we dined on the spacious patio. We had the queso fondido as an appetizer – melted goat cheese with chorizo. It was divine. We ordered the short ribs and duck tacos for dinner and shared. Both were delicious. The duck was succulent. The short ribs, however, were some of the best I’ve ever had. Served with a pomegranate demi, they were sweet and savory. The chipotle mashed potatoes provided the perfect balance to the richness of the glaze.
Service from Olivia was seamless. We won’t wait two years to return next time.

My bf LOVES this place but the one time i came here it had to (semi) suck — of course.
We came in at 9 pm. Restaurant was half empty with at least 7 to 8 staff on the floor excluding the hostess, bartender and owner.
Tortilla chips and salsa was brought to our tables with water promptly. It took them 30 mins (after complaining) to take our drinks and appetizer order. The waitress offered no apology and wasn’t too inclined to offer any justifications for the delay either.
Drink was good — felt like there was no alcohol (literally). It was a really delicious lemonade with jalapeños mint and cilantro ;)
Guacamole was unremarkable — meh is all that comes to mind
Main course — now that was really good. I got the veggie enchiladas with mole sauce — yumm. Bf got shrimp and scallops tamale — he loved it. Beware — portions are small. It was perfect for me but for the bad it ran a bit small. ask for hot sauce — they bring out homemade hot sauces which are epic if you love spicy food
Dessert — you HAVE to try the tres leches cake it is topped with marshmallows and lightly burnt… Omg heavenly.

One of the best spots in Short Pump! Every time I go I find myself getting the fish tacos — they are out of this world! I’ve tasted bites of my husband’s dishes and I’ve never had something I didn’t like… I just need those tacos! And, if you like hot sauce they have house made ones with a kick.

First time here… Great atmosphere inside. Outdoor seating looked inviting for warmer weather. Food was pretty good. The classic margarita was smooth and easy to drink.
Staff were all very nice and super attentive.
Great place for date night, as it can be intimate and wasn’t too loud. Great place for girls night out or family diner, as lots of space.
Will come back again soon!

Love this place! Great food & atmosphere. I’ve been here many, many times and I’ve had just about all the entrees. This place does not disappoint. A fancier Mexican restaurant but still authentic. Great service too.

Maya is our go-​to restaurant for good, quality Mexican food which is unlike the ubiquitous Tex-​Mex restaurants.
To begin with, they serve very flavorful salsa and thin, crispy chips that have a good taste of corn. I just wish it wasn’t served in those cheap, plastic, waxed paper lined «baskets». Of their three types of guacamole, I prefer the «Tipical» — the flavor of the avocado is prominent. The serving size for their guacamole is considerably smaller than found elsewhere.
For appetizers, the Roasted Pork over Tostones is quite good. I haven’t tried the Queso Fundido because it includes goat cheese which I do not like. Quite a number of their menu items have goat cheese for some reason.
Of the margaritas, we prefer the «Maria», which has very good quality liquors and fresh squeezed lime juice. No triple sec or pre-​mixed sour mix. All the drinks we have had have been good. Although I wasn’t quite as fond of their sangria.
I have had the chicken enchiladas at lunch and prefer it with the tomatillo sauce (very good sauce). I do not like their mole sauce though because it is much too sweet and one-​dimensional in flavor.
For lunch, my preference is the chicken fajitas. The chicken has a fantastic seasoning and is moist with lots of flavor. The onions and peppers are delicious too. The peppers are red and yellow, and not the typical green ones, thus so much better. The fajitas are served with a small amount of rice, black beans, guacamole, pico, and sour cream. I do want to try the skirt steak fajitas because I have had the skirt steak for dinner and it was delicious.
My husband has had the House Ceviche and likes it but finds it a bit too sour.
For dinner, our favorite is the Pan Seared Red Snapper. We have had it served different ways with different ingredients and it has always been delicious and never over-​cooked.
The Skirt Steak has always been good, but it is usually served with plantain which I don’t like. The way the skirt steak is prepared and served can differ as well.
We have had some great food at Maya and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to try good quality, modern, and flavorful Mexican food that is very unlike the typical Tex-​Mex restaurants in the Richmond area.
We have had good servers and the bartender makes very good drinks. The restaurant has always been very clean as well. Sometimes the food has been attractively placed on the plate, and other times not so much so, thus not as appealing. They have an outdoor dining area with nice furniture and lighting, but it overlooks a parking lot and street. Of course most outdoor dining in Richmond does the same.
Note: You can get items for take-​out, including their delicious salsa and chips. Also, they have happy hour on Monday-​Thursday.

It’s been over two years, but one thing I remembered and looked forward to try again were their margaritas!
Drinks:
We ordered a classic margarita and a mango infused margarita. I say infused rather than flavored, because the mango did not taste like it was a syrup. The mango flavor tasted fresh, and it can fool anybody if it isn’t! The margarita is freshly made and you can taste it! I usually don’t order margaritas, they are too sweet and people always use the mix which is way too sweet. This is how a margarita should be made!
Food:
I will come back to retry the food. I sadly did not write a review when I did. However, I highly recommend Verde Guacamole (or just go with the Trio). I have prepared my guacamole many different ways, but I never once thought about putting pomegranate and pumpkin seeds in my guacamole. It was amazingly tasty, and blend of flavored go very well!

I drove 2 hours to make sure the margarita was part of a one year anniversary drink with the girlfriend. If this doesn’t take you here, then I don’t know what will.

Was in town visiting and decided to try this place out based on the good reviews we read online. the place is nice on the inside but the booth we sat in was a Lil cramped.
I ordered a mojito to start with and it was bad, and over stuffed with limes so much so it tasted very bitter from the rinds. the salsa was bland.
My entrée was some type of salmon dish with mashed sweet plantains. I did not like it my date also did not like his enchiladas. Both entrées were sweet and had fruit garnish and glaze smh some meals shouldn’t be sweet I don’t care how pretty and colorful the fruit will look on the plate. Even the roast pork tostones were sweet. Not a fan.

Oh, how I love your margaritas! They even have prickly pear, my usual favorite. However, I haven’t tried it because I’m hooked on the one with mint and habanero. I could drink a pitcher of it! Coming from AZ, it’s in line with Scottdale’s trendy taco restaurants. So, 5 star for margaritas.
I only order the carnitas tacos. While they aren’t Mexican-​grocery-​store-​food-​counter amazing, they are solid. And, they come on corn tortillas which I’ve learned isn’t necessarily the standard here in RVA.
We’ve always had great service. I’m so glad we only live about 5 minutes away!

This is the second visit here. This time was even better than before. The wait staff is always friendly. It looks like this place it is going be expensive but it isn’t. The only thing that tastes expensive is the food. It is AWESOME! The chips come to your table HOT! The salsa was spicy but not over the top. We ordered the queso fundido appetizer. We should have stopped right there because it was a melted cheese, bean, meat bonanza! They were nachos with an attitude!
I had the sweet potato and crab bisque and the bowl was so big, I couldn’t finish it. This bowl was the size of a small hub cap. My wife had the steak bbq tacos that melted in your mouth. Both us and my wallet left feeling full!

So, this was definitely a change from the usual Mexican restaurant. The interior is dark, but very nice. There are not a lot of vegetarian options. But the server was able to make suggestions on things that could be made vegetarian. The food was good. Honestly, my server is the reason I’m giving this place 4 stars and not 3. She was Th a g good. The margarita was good and there are several flavors. Overall, I’m glad I went, but it won’t be my «go to» place to eat.

Everything was great. Host staff was friendly, chips were hot, drinks were strong, staff continued to check on us, food was delicious, it is in a nice area.
The staff, especially Anna, was very knowledgable of the menu, drinks, and recommendations. We will definitely come back.

Thoroughly enjoyed my dinner here one Friday and came back the next week. It is higher quality and more creative Mexican than the usual. Lunch will not break the bank either.
Best to order many dishes and share. Tried the chorizo and goat cheese quesidilla and a filled puff pastry like dish and they were so good. The fish tacos and cerviche also got rave reviews. The carnitas tacos so yummy. The filet mignon on a skewer app was a bit on the dry side. Kicked myself for not saving room for the churros, so crispy and sweet. Had the tres leches, while good I’m learned I’m not a huge tres leches cake fan.
Also their drinks were very yummy. There was a drink with a cinnamon rim that I really liked.
