As the only game in town, you have to shop here or go to Anchorage, an hour drive each way. They have a reasonable selection(some of good quality), expectedly high prices, friendly(if inattentive) staff, and Safeway attitude. When I was checking out, the system put a $ 5 donation on my tab, which I did not want to make. It ran the charge through my credit card instantly. The cashier said the donation pops up on his screen so fast he cannot stop it. There is no way for him to reverse it out once it goes through. I contacted Safeway when I got back home, but they were not very concerned, nor helpful.

Doug and crew were so nice and helpful. This little mercantile has a lot of stuff. So, if you are driving down the highway and need something, pop off the highway and send these folks your business. They have postcards.

Why go all the way to the ARM when you can stay in Girdwood for most of your convenience needs? Aside from the bare/bear necessities, they have an excellent selection of beer, wine, and spirits. You’ll do yourself a favor by opening a frequent shopper account…

Essentials are here: quick snacks, pantry items, basic toiletry and kitchen items. There is also someone behind the counter to ring you up, but they are not guaranteed to have a smile or appear concerned about whether or not you are in the store. What you see is what you get. What can you expect though? This is Girdwood, Alaska. If you are shopping at «the Merc» odds are you’re a resident that needs something specific or just another tourist expecting much more than rural Alaska has to offer.

This is not a grocery store, nor does it purport to be. For a quick errand: beverages, cereal, Advil, and other random needs, the Mercantile will suffice. Very handy in the hood.

It is charming and has all the essentials, albeit slightly more expensive than in Anchorage. They don’t really sell any touristy things, which is actually nice; they are staying true to what it should do: serve the locals.

Crow Creek Mercantile is just exactly what a mercantile in a small town is supposed to be. Tampons to toothpaste to terry cloth bibs to tomatoes and turkey. Fresh coffee, a respectable little produce section and an ATM that only charges you an arm, but not the accompanying leg, to take money out. It has the look of an old west general store, and the same cozy little-bit-of –everything homeyness too. When I come back to Girdwood, I’ll be back to the Mercantile. YEAH, there isn’t really anywhere else to buy stuff. But that is beside the point.
