Masso’s is the only place where I will get water ice. Yes, you read correctly. In South Jersey, we call it water ice — not Italian ice. This place has been open for as long as I can remember, and I’ve been going here since my childhood. It was always exciting when we would stop here on the way back from a field trip during summer camp when I was in elementary school, or it was a special treat after school. My favorite flavors are cherry and lemon. The cherry has pieces of maraschino cherries, and the lemon has tiny pieces of lemon peel. It is so refreshing and will cool you off on a sweltering summer day. They also have gellatos, a twist of water ice and vanilla custard if you want a creamier treat. It gets busy on nice days, but it won’t cause a long wait. They also have a little covered deck, so you can enjoy your treat in the shade. Forget Rita’s or Diane’s Water Ice. Masso’s is a classic landmark in South Jersey and is the perfect spot on a hot sunny day.

I used to get custard here years ago, and I think I may go back to ordering just that. Their water ice just does not do it for me. The last water ice I got could not have been more basic — cherry — and it had pieces in it. Pieces of what I do not know. Not fruit, not ice. Seemed more like… like PAPER or something! I think that happened before, too, a few years ago. Weird! Well, I live nearby, so I’ll just maybe get custard from now on. I almost forgot to mention that you have to wait forever in line. But maybe that means it’s supposed to be good. Or maybe the people don’t know what they want to order. I’d rather go next door & eat the food.

Not too expensive, with great selection and huge portions(perhaps that is a drawback, or will be when my pants cease to fit). They do not have hard ice cream, however.
