35 miles south west of Portland is a cool place for a picnic and small power boats and jet ski fun. Hike and mountain bike very good. Very few people there in middle of the week. I am out for a solo fat tire ride all the way around(14 miles) the lake on the singletrack trail. The trail is 75% in lush Oregonian shade. Yeah baby, it was hot today but I was shady-cool! Ferns, blackberries, meadows and wildflowers. A couple places you exit the trail back onto a paved road and then find the trail again — where there’s wetlands and eco-sensitive areas. Sometimes the trail is marked, other times not. Don’t worry! Just stay between the paved road and lake and you won’t get lost on occasional trails that intersect the main trail. Total elevation gain for the loop was 925 feet between 1400 to 1850 feet. Hard pack with tree roots. Steep ups /downs here and there. A very good workout ride. Not challenging technically but if you are intermediate or even advanced you can go «balls out» flying on the trail and have a blast. Great fat tire fun! $ 6 fee to park. Annual pass $ 35. Lots of picnic areas with nice restrooms. If mountain biking, park anywhere there is a lot and pop on the trail. I see no real advantage of one parking lot over another if you are taking the entire loop around the lake. Google Henry Hagg Lake for driving directions.
