The Wagon Wheel Motel AND Café… this place is long gone. Sad too… I have fond memories of staying there over Thanksgiving weekend back in the ‘90s. The proprietors were getting on in years, but they loved having their motel full of guests. They cooked up a traditional Thanksgiving dinner which included as much turkey, mash potatoes and stuffing that you could eat as well as green beans with those fried onions, jello ambrosia salad, pumpkin pie and cobbler… all…homemade and included in the price of the room. The cabins were definitely rustic and charming. Great place with access to the Smith River. I recently looked on Google maps and the place is in disrepair. It was bought by someone around 2008 who opened it up catering to bikers, but it now looks closed. I couldn’t find any old pics of this place in it’s prime. Too bad… it should be a part of California motel history.
