First time here. Brisket was solid, not as great as Pecan Lodge but very good. Hickory smoked sausage was also good along with pork. Service for food is immediate so no complaints. Ton of beer choices and they let you taste test before choosing. I went with«Beach Please», light beer and solid choice. Would highly recommend for beer and BBQ lovers. Check in on Unilocal and you get a free house beverage with a meat plate!

This place is an upgrade to Garland. I grew up in Garland and about 15yrs ago I moved to Seattle. I always come back to Garland to visit my mom. Finally somewhere close to Mom’s without the need to driving into Dallas. The beer selection is fantastic! There happen to be Deep Ellum beers there a plus, no need to drive into Dallas. The food. We ordered a meat plate and shared it. Brisket was darn moist, tender with good fat on it. We loved the rub it was fantastic. The ribs were good as well good smoke flavor and tender. However the pork is a little dry but that didn’t turn us off Now let’s talk sides!!! So many options. I opted for jalapeño creamed corn & fried okra(love the stuff). The corn was amazing not watery or runny nor overly creamy. Just right and good jalapeño heat! Okra was traditionally great. Pickles!!! I’m not a fan of them but we got the sweet & spicy and super crunchy! Every time we go back home we will stop here!

What a singular al fresco drinking/BBQ experience. Their patio is this gutted out urban ruin adjacent to the nifty colorful bar/brewery/restaurant. It is like TX-meets-Brooklyn as a Brewery/BBQ joint, in the best way you can imagine. The gal behind the bar was super helpful without assuming I didn’t know anything about beer myself. The BBQ was average prices with above average quality– full of flavor, brisket nice & juicy, sides were steam table set up & even though we were here between meals it was not at all dried out, we enjoyed everything. Awesome choice of 2 pickles at the condiment bar– spicy & sweet. High marks from me as Cold Brew on Nitro is a treat I’ve found only in 1st tier beer cities like Portland, Seattle, Denver… Intrinsic is the 1st I’ve found in DFW. The coldbrew itself could’ve used higher nitro pressure & flavors were on the softer/chocolate-y side, but still a nice option. We had a flight of 4 beers & had a 50⁄50 experience– the Fruit Cup & House sangria were misses(the former plastic-y & overly grapefruited, the latter like Hi-C Hawaiian Punch. But their session IPA could go head to head with the best of them(All Day, Even Keel, Easy Jack). And their blonde is smartly brewed for the local palette. We so enjoyed this unique patio & their excellent guest tap selection as well. Congrats to Garland for attracting Intrinsic! One update from our 3rd visit– so… it’s now too hot to sit out on any patio anymore… booo…summer is here. Love the blast chill cool of the interior space. Bravo there. But you have GOT to get better ventilation for the BBQ restaurant in the back. Oh my, our eyes burned tonight(6÷16÷16) from the smoke once the heat drove us inside. There was live music which was really fantastic(if on the overpoweringly loud side). We stayed longer than we meant to, just to listen… but our smokey clothes stunk up the car on the way home. A real bummer but easily remedied with a serious ventilation upgrade.

Went with a large group on a Saturday night. First impression coming in the door was giant wall of noise. The place is LOUD. Between the brick walls and concrete floor and all the people and the guy playing music I literally had to shout at the man to place a food order. Our party opted to go to the patio to escape the noise but that subjected us to the heat, humidity and bugs. No fans of any kind to help. Still, it was better than being inside and going deaf. Adding fans would benefit the place exponentially. My food was decently passable but not even remotely overwhelming. The brisket didn’t have enough fat content so it and the sausage were dry(end of day stuff? too long under lamps…). The okra was not crisp and the batter boring. The bread we were offered was generic sliced white bread from the store and wasn’t even toasted. Side items were not available because they were out(here is a clue, when you see the pan getting low cook more). All in all I think this is one of those places where people go for beer and socializing and the food is a secondary concern. There is tremendous potential, but they need to work on getting the menu up to snuff. Not everyone is a craft brew fan. All the staff I met were pleasant and helpful. Parking is a nightmare. Over 40 $ for my husband and I to order two dinners. Another place I would eat at again if other folks wanted to meet there, but not a place I would intentionally go back to on my own or suggest to others.

Not sure what happened to this place, but they sure have come down in the quality department recently. 1st: We were the only two customers when we walked in, bar person watched us walk in, but he declined to say anything at all, even though I said good afternoon as I approached him. Decided to forego a beer after that and order at the main station in the rear instead. 2nd: Posted hours 11 – 11. Showed up at 4:50PM on a weekday only to be told that there was only jalapeño sausage available, per the cutter: «meat comes out at 5». 3rd: 5PM: Two people order three different sides(okra not available — tray was empty,) each and every one of them were cold, not just a little under temp, but as if the warmer tray had been turned off and the sides left to cool for an extended period of time. When reported, manager had nothing to say about it, nor were the cold offerings removed from the warmer trays. Admittedly they did bring out replacements, but main course was long finished by then. *Minor issue: Bread stale as well. 4th: Brisket, and pulled pork fresh out of the oven, yet both very dry. This might have been just an unfortunate day to visit, but difficult to understand how a restaurant can list 12 continuous hours of operation, and not be able to serve 4 out of the 5 main dish offerings during those hours. I might be willing to put up with the lackluster customer service for a great meal, but when the service and the food are as bad as they were on this visit, I will think more than twice about visiting again.

REALLY fantastic barbecue and a great atmosphere as well. I’m not much for craft beer, but this place seems to also be a great location for fans of it. Their sauces are pretty unique too. I’ve never tasted a barbecue sauce as sweet yet still good as their mildest flavor. My wife and I have started going here whenever we’re wanting quality barbecue that isn’t too far from home. I really like their brisket flatbread. It’s the closest thing to a barbecue pizza if I had to describe one. Definitely stop by if you’re in Garland, and check it out even if you’re not if you are a fan of good barbecue and craft beer.

I would love to say they have great food and wonderful customer service but I’d be lying! I’ve been in contact with them for WEEKS about planning my husbands 40th birthday party. Repeatedly asking them how to get confirmation and the date time set… Ironing out details as it abundantly clear that they don’t know how to book private events… Even as far as ordering a specific beer to have on tap for us. Email sent today to confirm my food order to only be replied w «sorry somebody paid a deposit already»”?!? Funny, never was a mention of a deposit made to me in the emails we’ve been exchanging… In fact in those emails it was stated that I would have the space at my designated time and date, repeated requests on what I need to do to solidify that went unanswered, they are NEVER there when you call(which I have done 4 – 5 times over the course of planning) and now they want to play it off as if I was never sure if I wanted to book?!? Are you kidding me? Not sure what emails they are reading but I thought at least the time and date were pretty set to me So not only did they not inform whoever did book my time that it wasn’t available, they didn’t even think a courtesy check in of «hey I have someone else wanting to book» would be beneficial. Now they are playing it off like they did nothing wrong and unwilling to honor our prior agreement. They did however offer two other weekends bc you know moving family and peoples schedules is just that easy So unbelievably pissed off, disappointed and disgusted with their lack of customer service, and now must find somewhere that actually wants my $ 1500 Good luck if you are considering booking an event with these amateurs Updated 6÷8÷16 after owners response Lol wow! Took you 10 days to respond… but taking 10 days to respond to anything means«you’re not serious», right? And let’s just add, the first time I was called there was no apology, no attempt to make it right, no care that it even happened. It was only after THIS review did you think it would be beneficial to attempt to right a wrong… and yes you did offer me alternate dates and times that did not work for me, but no I did not specifically ask for you to cancel on another party. I did, however, let you know via email that I would no longer need your services. I believe in the same email you basically asked me to edit or remove my reviews you talked about small business and how this place was your life, that must only apply to you as you had no problem writing FAKE reviews on another small business that has NOTHING to do w the issue at hand. Not only does that make you look small and petty… it makes you a hypocrite. (BTW when I said I owned my own business, you assumed that was the one I was talking about… It wasn’t) And you’re right my original post had nothing to do w your food because the issue had nothing to do with your food but since you bring it up… The one and only time I have eaten at Intrinsic the pulled pork was dry and flavorless, the corn nuggets were cold and soggy, the Mac and cheese was oily and bland, and there was a serious lack of non-alcoholic beverages. Kuddos however on your ribs! Have a great day!

Don’t let the 5-star reviews fool you. This place is mediocre, at best! It’s an unexpectedly nice looking place in downtown Garland. It may become a cool hangout for locals, but I doubt it will last. Their BBQ lacks real flavor because none of the flavor penetrates into the meat — brisket was too tough and the ribs taste as if they were steamed or boiled. A real smokehouse BBQ joint will produce flavor-rich meats. The BBQ at Intrinsic is very disappointing.(Meshack’s is less than a mile away, so they better fix their«Smokehouse» BBQ if they want to last.) The sides are limited but pretty good. The greens were a little to vinegar-y and the bacon pinto beans were too bacon-y… yes, it is possible for a sidedish to have too much bacon flavor… but overall they were pretty good. Their food prices were reasonable. I paid less than $ 35 for 1 lb of brisket and ½ slab of ribs. Not bad. The beer selection is somewhat unique compared to many other places but they make you pay for it, and with State Street Pub a few doors down I doubt many customers will continue to pay more for less. I paid almost $ 14 for two«regular» beers. Also, I don’t think their brewery tanks are being used because they looked dusty and unkempt. So it appears that Intrinsic is neither a real smokehouse or a real brewery. Too bad, because it really could be a cool place.

Intrinsic’s BBQ is Detestable! Intrinsic’s earned a strong One Star rating because the Men’s restroom room was clean. I had been in it once.(Restaurant’s cleanliness and staff’s behavior is CRUCIAL in business.) On Sunday May 22 around 6:00ish in the evening I went for a pound of brisket to serve over an artisan salad. When I arrived home I noticed the beef was the color of fresh Clump & Seal cat litter; a light grey color.(See image below compared to the other images of the BBQ. I believe the Intrinsic BBQ I received must have been an anomaly. But hey, money is money and business is business. You’ve got to get it right each and every $ 20 time.) Intrinsic’s BBQ had no flavor. Intrinsic’s BBQ was… like I had been trying to eat dog treats of dried pig ears… Detestable. Intrinsic’s BBQ would not cut with a knife. Intrinsic’s BBQ is bad for the environment. Its unhealthy for the environment because each in-house ration is served in a «to go» container instead of proper tableware. Trashed it. The Tea & Shade: IF you have always wanted to try the pig ears your dog chews & screw the environment try Intrinsic BBQ today. BTW, I actually talk like this… I wake up like this.

Three of us had really outstanding BBQ here. Ribs were meaty and smokey, served nice and hot with generous and tasty sides. The sides matter. Jalapeño creamed corn was fantastic and the beans(more pinto then baked) were smoky and delicious. Beer selection is first rate and the setting is perfect for an area undergoing revitalization. Highly recommended.

How have I not heard of this place sooner!!! Amazing meat. You don’t even need the sauce but should try it anyway. I like spicy and they offer a spicy sauce. The portions are huge. I ordered the ¼ pound and have leftovers for lunch tomorrow. The staff is friendly and the layout of the place is really appealing. I will definitely be a repeat customer!!!

Cool brewpub with a solid selection of beers made in house. I had the IPA which was well balanced and still hoppy enough for this Portland transplant. The food was very good. Had brisket and chicken and was pleased with both. Service is good, but it is order at the counter style. Trivia at the tables is fun and a good way to stay off your phone and actually engage the company you are dining with… crazy, right? Will definitely be back to try more of their beers.

This place is just wonderful. You can never go wrong with good BBQ. When you go into the place, you start off by ordering your beer that is crafted in house. They have a fantastic tab system that works! You then can pick your seat and walk to the back and order your BBQ. Once you pick your meat, you can add it to your tab and sit down and eat. You can either pay for it up front or in the back which is really cool. You can’t go wrong with any meats you pick there, it’s all good. But for the side, I do recommend getting the jalapeño cream corn. You will definitely regret it if you don’t get it. The atmosphere here is great, everyone is always friendly and there are games you can play and just enjoy with friends and family.

Absolutely love coming to Intrinsic and feel pretty lucky to have it right around the corner from my house! The creamed corn is insanely delicious!!! The sangria is a must, don’t waste time ordering a glass, go ahead and order a half. The beer rotates frequently. My younger brother advised the root beer is the best he’s ever had. Plus, they always have live music and board games. How could we NOT go here often?!

We love our new hangout! Being Garland residents we always strive to support local businesses. We read about Intrinsic in Avid Golfer and wanted to give it a try. We are very glad we did! Brisket was out of this world, chicken was great and ribs super yummy. The sides we had(Mac, creamed corn and beans) were fantastic. We are picky about our BBQ and Intrinsic does it right! Kids can play with the board games(as well as outside on the patio) while the adults have some adult beverages. What we loved the most is the laid back vibe. Like craft brews, chill music and great food wrapped up in an eclectic environment? Yes? Haul your ass here pronto!

Wow. Just wow. Their bbq here is really good. They also have their own beers and brew them on site. I had the three meat combo. Brisket, pulled pork and chicken. They have different bbq sauce. But there’s one that is really good. I didn’t get the name of it but fine one you like. Also, my friend recommended the creamed corn. And my Gawwwwwd it was delicious. So definitely try that and let me know what you think. Also, if you check in on Unilocal, you can get your first beer on the house. I don’t know how long that is gonna last though! Cheers(:

They have about 6 bbq sauces of varying spiciness which is awesome!!! One unique thing about them is they have a pre 3:00 menu and a post 3:00pm menu and the selections are completely different. Go and enjoy this awesome bbq place! The interior is decorated really modern with a tin ceiling and a cement floor. The bar is large and gorgeous with a lot of modern lighting! Some of the BESTBBQ I’ve had in 50 plus years. You will LOVEIT! Went on a weeknight and had a 3 meat sampler to try it out for the first time. Everything on that plate was great. They had a huge array of homemade sauces to go with the meat, but I didn’t put anything on it but my lips! THAT good! Might be a little more $ than some BBQ places around town, but worth it. DIdn’t have much room left for sides, but ordered the okra and beans. Both good. Home brews super. Esp. the OB Juan with a splash of jalapeño, maybe? Great find!

First time visit. Wish I could go 4.75 stars. They earned it! I would go 5 but there are a couple of places I like a tad better. Time will tell however, and I fully expect this place to hit 5 at some point. As for the hipster comments, its as if that were a bad thing. And sometimes it is, especially when its contrived as a way to cater to a particular group. But not here. Its legit. These folks live and breathe a culture of smoke and hops, and bring a fresh perspective to today. Its now, and it’s real. And unlike all the hipster doofus joints in Uptown, these folks are not snobs. This experience is accessible from babies in car seats to The Greatest Generation. Moving on to the food. Brisket is «wet” — that is to say it is nicely marbleized and has some fat, so its tender and flavorful, and has a nice bark that can go from tender to chewy. I only had a couple of bites, but what I had was really good. I had ribs(4) and managed to eat two. They are cooked perfectly, not overdone. Meaty, delicious, and rich. Sides were all excellent– as good as they get. Beans were amazing. Creamed jalapeño corn looked dry but were excellent. Okra was moist inside, crispy outside. Slaw was excellent, not too sweet. They offer jalapenos, a couple of kinds of pickles, and chopped onion on the relish bar, as well as three different BBQ sauces– sweet, regular and spicy. All were tasty, although not necessary. They do compliment they meat if you like sauce. This place is also a brewery, and sampling a flight of four of the in-house made brews revealed the brewmaster is a talented individual. I addition to the in-house craft brews, there are«visiting» brews from other local breweries, as well as wine on tap. And a delicious house made root beer that is not too sweet. I loved it because most root beer is overly sweet. Interior is spacious, simple, comfortable. There is a large patio next door. Basically another building missing the roof. There is also a nice long bar inside. We will be back, and look forward to trying other meats(Chicken, pulled pork) and they were turning out some delicious looking flat bread and nachos.

Ok, I’m going 5-stars on this place, a rarity for me: in otherwise quiet almost haunted Downtown Garland Square, this little gem of a place is on State street. Nice space, nice patio, nice choice of house brewed beers(and wine for those that need their pinkies raised): now for the food. I ordered a half pound of lean brisket, a half pound of moist brisket, and some ribs. The brisket were amazingly ‘bark-y’ and just the right among of smoke, the ribs smoked perfect for me(a little tug required, not overcooked«fall of the bone» crap), and while I never do this, even the BBQ sauce in bottles on the side table was tasty(on my finger anyway). Stout beer was amazing. I really like this place.

* Prices, especially for lunch, too high. * Brisket — too fatty and the bark had no flavor. How is that possible? * Sauce was fair. * The bun for the sandwich was terrible. Except that it really had no flavor or texture. * I liked the chips. I believe they were homemade. I believe this restaurant has been open a couple of months. As a BBQ restaurant, it’s doomed unless they want to change. I doubt it because they are looking for a certain age group and style of customer. But I don’t care who you are serving, if the food is bland and tasteless, you’re going down.

I’ve been back a couple of times and tried the pulled pork this last time and it was really pretty good, especially after adding some«August» BBQ sauce with a bit of a kick. Tried the jalapeño corn and it was really pretty great. The second time I was here I tried just the chicken(half) and it was actually better than the brisket. Very moist and tender. I think I just don’t prefer their rub as my first choice, since it has more of a woody(chili powder) flavor with not a lot of(if any) salt in the rub. But hang on… I’m going back for a 4th time to try the Cajun Baloney, and will also try a different side. I really want this place to do well! Maybe they will listen to our advice on our reviews and tweak just a bit?

Since I’m a certified beer knurd and like to support Garland businesses, I was looking forward to my first visit. First visit was probably the last visit. There’s just too much hipster vibe, not enough food and overpriced weak beer. And I’m pretty forgiving when it comes to beer. Leave it in the tank a bit longer guys. It needs aging. Hubby and I swung by a week ago to grab a couple beers after dinner. We really dig this new downtown Garland spot! Sat at the bar and the bartender was really friendly and witty. We totally understand why the owners would want him on board. I had the black pale ale — YUMMY! And we loved the relaxed vibe and modern, rustic interior. Those beautiful picnic style tables would be great for beers and BBQ with a bunch of pals. We’ll be back with friends next time to try the BBQ. Oh, and ladies… They have a sangria on tap. We stopped in to try out the beers. It’s a little bit of a drive for us but it was worth it. The brewery is housed in a charming older building with lots of character. It’s a great atmosphere and while we were there we enjoyed live music from an acoustic guitar player. We each did beer flights of their house brews. My favorites were the Blonde and the Doppelbock my husband really enjoyed the smoked wheat and the spicy habenero. The staff was very friendly. We enjoyed our visit and will definitely return. I enjoyed a flight of their house beers– really enjoyed the Tamarind Habenero beer. Husband got a growler of the house made root beer. Great place for all ages. We noticed they were setting up for live music as we were leaving. We will be back to check out happy hour Tuesday-Friday 3 – 6

Craft beer with pretty solid bbq… Yes please! Came in on a Sunday so being the first person in was a little intimidating but the staff was friendly and directed me to what I wanted/needed. I will say that their posted drafts are posted a little high at the bar but they do have a print out of everything so no worries there. As for the food, all sides were good and tasty. Cole slaw had enough juice and wasn’t dry at all. Mac and cheese was also good. It wasn’t bland and generic like most can be. Now for the beef. Wow was it moist all the way to the last bite. I went for the lean side and it was perfect. They cut it right in front of me, from a fresh slab, and gave me half a pound, which was more than enough when all said and done. The bbq sauce that I picked out was sweet and I loved that. They also have your typical bbq joint add ins like bread, onions, and two types of pickles. Beer selection was good. They have a lot of their brews on tap and bring in other local breweries to round out their beer selection. They also make their own pub made ice cream and sodas. Family friendly their folks!!! I got lucky and was able to get a left over beer from a party they had for New Years. The coffee cherry stout. Holy coffee nose batman!!! But the cherry soften that up in the end and everything mixed perfectly. Enjoy this place in downtown Garland. It’s worth a drive out because once you do, you will want to come back.

So I am giving it 3 stars because everything is fixable. The portions were tiny. I am a little peeved that I paid $ 15 for a chicken leg and 3 ribs. 3 tiny ribs at that. The mac and cheese was dry. The best thing was the creamed corn. You have to pay at 2 separate registers if you want to eat and drink and there is no wait staff, you get everything on your own. They were out of half of their meats at 7 on a Saturday. The ambience is cool and I love the vibe. Live music was good. Fix the portions or the price and I’d be a happier camper.

The concept is great, an old building on the Garland square housing a restaurant and microbrewery attached to a burned out building next door that enables open-air seating. It works, very charming. The sides we tried were great — corn fritters, jalapeño corn casserole, and the mustard greens, oh those mustard greens — awesome! Many other sides are available, $ 3 a la cart. I don’t really want to continue from here, but it would not be fair to stop. The sliced brisket — good grief, a disaster on so many levels. — the sandwich was really small, but that could not have been a mistake, because the server spent about half a minute precisely weighing the meat. — the bun was not fresh, not even close. — In what had to be the worst bush league mistake ever made in a BBQ joint, the slices for the sandwich were cut WITH the grain resulting in tough 4 inch chunks that could not be bitten through, so they had to be fished out and consumed in one long chewy mastication. — There was plenty of bark and some burnt ends served with my wife’s plate, but the bark had that kerosene-like aftertaste that comes from closing the smokestack damper for long periods causing moisture in the pit to build up and deposit nastiness on the surface of the meat. Continuing on, I didn’t try any of the beers brewed on-site, but my wife and I both had a draft Texas Star bock lager. They were poured with a huge head and never topped off, just handed to us. For $ 5.50/pint we were disappointed by that. WIGB? Maybe, if someone I trust convinces me they’ve done a 180.

This is such a nice fun place. We enjoyed a flight of Lunch Date(blonde), G-Town Gratzer(smoked wheat), Tamarind Habenero(fruit/pepper)~all were guest beers, as well as Royal Flush Red Ale from Four Bullets Brewing. They were $ 2.25 each for 4 oz taster. Then we had a pint of Picker Porter and IP80. Pints were $ 4.75. Loved both of them. Was worried the Tamarine Habenera would be too hot, but it just leaves a bit of spicy aftertaste; certainly wouldn’t stay away from it. Then we shared 2 meat lunch of pulled pork & brisket; sides we chose were slow cooked pinto beans, corn nuggets & Mac n Cheese. While we were there, they ran out of chicken & ribs. They have all local/Texas beers and wine + homemade sodas. Great addition to Garland’s downtown! Live band at Grand Opening on open air patio between 2 buildings.
