The place that allows me to be the ass kicking person that I am today.. Just kidding. I think. I came to Hong-Gia thinking I’d learn to kick some butt but it actually offered me more than I could ever imagine. After taking Tae Kwon Do and Aikido, I felt like everything was so systematic and couldn’t really prepare me for anything that occurred in real life. Hong-Gia is a Taoist Kung-Fu type of martial arts that was taught in the monasteries on an island off of Vietnam called La Phu Son. The basics of this style are to develop body protection and strength. I’ve taken a few martial arts but Hong-Gia is the one that never emphasized on how high you kicked or how hard you could break something. Everything is fluid and comes with ease. Breathing is a very important concept to this style. But in the end you could do some amazing damage. It was never a competition in anything. we were taught certain movements and what positions to take if in an uncompromising position. The 10 years I was there, I studied nei kung and qikong. Nei kung gave me strength and qikong gave me focus and better physical and mental health. I also studied the snake style as well as double sword, single sword and dao. I had severe asthma as a kid and after a few years at Hong-Gia, I now live an inhaler-less life! They offer courses for adults and children and at $ 60 adults, $ 30 kids a month(you could go unlimited), it really is a good deal. Hong-Gia is taught both in English and Vietnamese and Hong-Gia actually has locations all over the world including Russia. I’m kinda bummed I no longer have time to practice but if you do want to learn a martial arts that isn’t all about rules and limitations and you want to learn how to handle/defend yourself in real life situations, Hong-Gia can definitely teach you it!
