Food here is terrific. Nice little place open for breakfast and lunch near the Strand. The salsa was a bit spicy for me(I’m a wimp) but perfect for my companion. I had the grilled chicken which was perfectly cooked and wonderfully season. Whether I created my own taco or ate it ala carte it was delicious. Rice and refried beans also flavorful. My companion had the chicken enchiladas with charro beans and thought they were great with authentic salsa verde and homemade tortillas. Lots of Mexican favorites on the menu. We would definitely come back. Yummy!!!

Authentic, where the locals go, Migas are one of my favorite breakfast meals when eating out and these were delicious, fabulous price.

The best Mexican food on the island by far! Texas Monthly has featured it on several occasions and has also made this claim. The breakfast burritos are delicious. Homemade chips and salsa are incredible! You must try their fajitas. I have been a customer for several years and will continue returning.

I love this place. I go once a week(or I used to) and have been for 10+ years… But the owner is a jerk! This is my first awful experience with him. I get its Mardi Gras dude, but DON’T yell at people for parking near your establishment and not dining with you. Losing 2 customers. 5stars for food and service. Not the kitchen, nor the servers fault for his attitude.

on the outskirts of the strand… by the looks of it… you’d never think to stop there, but because of the good reviews on Unilocal… i did for breakfast today. had huevos mexicana w/corn tortilla’s, salsa, bacon, refried beans & potato’s – free refills on coffee EVERYTHING was EXCELLENT. fresh, flavorful… LOVEDIT. [comparable to the ranchito in houston that was my favorite cheap mexican] coffee…wasnt that great but, not a big deal at all server, hispanic male… very very nice total $ 8 support local. buy local

We loved this place. The eggs Mexicana were the best my husband had had for our 3 weeks in Texas. The shrimp chile relleno was out of this world. The chef is from Huahuapan, Oaxaca. The tapestry hangings were very pretty as well. Made me want to go back to Oaxaca.

I’ve been meaning to try this place since we moved to Galveston. Stupid me for waiting so long! We stopped in for breakfast on a Sunday and had a terrific breakfast. Decided on Migas. Yum! Service, price, portion, all good! We’ll be back and bring friends next time!

Excellent breakfast! Strand area breakfast options are slim on a Sunday morning. We wandered in hungry. Huge portions and very reasonable. I had the potato and egg burrito, and my boyfriend had huevos rancheros with a pork chop added(total game changer).

For breakfast, it would be hard to beat this little neighborhood gem. Price is extremely reasonable and servings are generous. Staff is friendly and nicely attentive and are eager to please. Can only wish they were open in the evenings!

Recommended. This place is exactly what I look for in a local Mexican restaurant. It’s quiet but friendly and the food is delicious. The service has always been on point and I haven’t found an item on the menu I don’t like. It’s tucked away in a shady corner of Mechanic St. so I was hesitant to try it at first, but after venturing in I’ve never been disappointed.

Visited La Mixteca for lunch, it was pretty busy but the staff was quick and friendly. Since I was in Galveston, I chose to order something from their seafood menu. I ordered the shrimp quesadilla. There was a lot of cheese, and the shrimp wasn’t bad. My boyfriend had the enchiladas, which he enjoyed. Just a normal run of the mill Mexican restaurant. I’d probably visit again.

All is gone and forgotten are the true tacos shells that were once made one at a time for some great home made tacos. But now with prefabricated taco shells you take the chance of getting a good fresh crispy one or a stale Simi soft one. The later is the case we all got here at this place. I am surprised at this as you would think they would notice this and correct the problem. I ordered the combination plate of two tacos and one enchilada with rice and beans. Note: If they are going to go the short and easy way of taco shells all they had to really do is place them in the oven at 225* for a short while to make them fresh or crisp again. That is if they are not to far gone already. Also, this makes them taste SO much better it’s really not funny. So with that I simply emptied the meat and condiments onto my plate and eat it with the crisp chips that came with the salsa. BTW: that was a good start with the salsa and chips. The salsa was made fresh and the chips were bagged ones but fresh and crisp. Good taste. My oldest son ordered the nachos for an appetizer and they came with beans, cheese on them and jalapenos, guacamole, and sour cream on the side. The nachos were made with packaged chips and not home made. They were covered with a slightly watered down refried pinto beans and with cheese on top. They were OK but we have had MUCH better ones elsewhere. You did have to eat them with a fork as the thin chips got soggy from the toppings. The enchiladas were good though and the rest of the family liked them also. The Spanish rice was tasty but needed a bit more cumin and garlic in it for my taste. But the Spanish rice was OK for me and the rest of our family members. The refried beans as I had said were a bit to watery but had a good taste to them. You did almost have to eat them with a spoon and not a fork. It was a close border line here… Anyways all the staff were friendly and kind to all of us and we will defiantly give them another chance someday soon. The location was easy to find and the prices were really reasonable. We will be back and give it another shot… but will avoid the tacos, nachos etc.

I love this place! The food is just so good! Love the Migas! Love the Huevos a la Mexicana. Love the beans. Décor is not what you go for. They spend their energy kicking out yummy Mexican food. Go eat. So worth it!

We were out and about on a weekday morning and had a need for Mexican breakfast. We hadn’t been by La Mixteca since Ike so we decided to pop in. Although they were totally inundated by those flood waters, the place looks unchanged. Festive décor and simple furnishings made us feel like we were in Mexico. We were the only diners so we had our pick of seating, plus great attention from the server. We got our coffee right away – it was a little weaker than I prefer – and came with little cream pods instead of fresh cream. Refills were frequent. The breakfast menu has plenty of standard offerings, but I had to have the Migas a la Mexicana(always my favorite, and my yardstick for any Mexican breakfast). It consists of eggs with tortilla strips, onions, tomatoes and serrano pepper(I substituted bell pepper and got jalapeños on the side), served with refried beans, fried potatoes and bacon. The Migas were as enjoyable as any I’ve had in Galveston. The bacon was thick and crisply well-done, good enough that I broke my no-bacon rule. The beans were a little runny. All were tasty. The salsa was very good, with a fine garlicky flavor. My colleague decided on a Burrito Supreme. The tortilla wrapper was generously endowed with eggs, beans, potatoes, bacon and cheese. It was tasty and filling. The tortilla was tender and not too thick, and adequate to contain all the ingredients. We perused the lunch menu while we were there, and it has amazing variety: everything from simple standard fare through intriguing seafood offerings. All prices are reasonable and they have daily lunch specials which are especially well-priced. I suspect lunch is their busiest time with downtown workers converging on the place. La Mixteca is not open for dinner. Overall we enjoyed our meal, and the price was remarkably low. Next time I’m there it will be to sample their lunches.

Good family-run restaurant, hidden just east of the American National Insurance Building. Fair prices for standard Tex-Mex cuisine. Good chips, good salsa. The«Grandote Burrito» is my favorite — a huge burrito stuffed with fajita meat served with a side of refried beans. Only open for breakfast and lunch.
