We always have had a great experience with the VA until my husband had to go to Emergency Room in Gainesville.
He couldn’t walk anymore and was in immortal pain. After 3 hours of waiting in the waiting room without seeing anyone, I started to inquire to when he was going to be seen as he was in great pain. A lot of people who arrived long after us had been seen. Finally after 4 hours he was in a room. My husband was supposed to be taken to get an x-​ray. No one came to get him.
After another ½ hour of no one checking on him I told one of the nurses that he was in really bad pain to please do something. The guy responded the doctor has to see him. Another ½ hour went by and I told the same nurse who was at a station with 3 other nurses doing absolutely nothing that he needed to be seen. He told me you have already told me so either go back to the room or wait in the emergency waiting area.
His tone of voice was so rude to me. I just couldn’t believe it. My husband needed to go to the bathroom so we pushed on the button for help and no one came but the same 4 nurses were still doing nothing or playing with their phones. After another ½ hour we left. We spent a total of 5 hours. We had driven two hours to get to Gainesville and had 2 more to go back.
We were SO disgusted with the way we were treated and my husband was still in so much pain.
When we left we told another nurse on the way out what had happened and he told us to report the incident to the patient advocate (352) 376‑1611 ext 6019. I will but my husband told me it is a waste of time.
Do Not go to the VA emergency room if you expect to be treated with human decency. If you are looking for treatment and compassion in the Emergency room you might as well save your gas and stay at home. These people are the most uncaring, rude and lazy people I have ever encountered in my life. They DO NOT care about VETERANS as we were not the only ones to request to be seen.

Great facility with wonderful caring staff. Even though grossly overloaded, they move forward meeting the needs.

2 years and no help. Sorriest most overpaid under educated example of govt bureaucracy and greed and you will have to die before you get help… Give veterans private insurance so they can get timely quality care. Va healthcare is a travesty and a joke! Our veterans deserve better

As a veteran that has been «stuck» in Gainesville because he’s homeless, not drug or alcohol related. This place disgusts me. Failure to treat, failure to diagnose, failure to medicate and increased pain and suffering. Primary Md’s that have no clue, except for referrals and they can’t even get that right.
Social workers that have no interest in helping anyone other than themselves.
Wheelchairs with NO footpads is how much they care.
Total waste of time… Go to Tampa or St. Pete if you can.

The care is good, the food is bad.

I recently had a heart catherization procedure at the VA Hospital in Gainesville. Without a doubt, these folks are the very best. You will never get this quality and caring treatment in a «civilian» hospital. They are 100% patient focused. VA treatment is the best.

I’m a Navy veteran and after being abruptly let go from my job at AvMed Health Plan here in Gainesville I immediately had NO health insurance. Upon submitting a hardship application to the VA, I was accepted.
This VA Hospital is awesome. Every encounter from primary care to prosthetics to pharmacy has been exceptional.
Don’t believe the negative reviews in the newspaper as they are slanted against the military. This is a great hospital with great physicians and other providers of care. Highly respected and very grateful.
