Troy High School

I am a fan of this school.
I graduated from Troy in 1974, and our son graduated in 2004.
We both enjoyed going here.
When I attended Troy, it was a regular comprehensive high school.
Fast forward to my son’s days here, it became a highly academic Tech and International Baccalaureate school.
It was hard to get into and difficult to compete.
For example, he couldn’t get into AP calculus because his prior math class grade was an «A-​» instead of an «A.» Crazy. It was that competitive.
Our son was a technology student, which was perfect, as he loved to code. He had plenty of other students to compete with. He also joined ASB and the Debate Team.
He made many lifelong friends.
I would highly recommend this school if your student is motivated and likes to study.
An added plus is the technology program there. Our son learned to program computers before he went to college. This was helpful as his major in college was Computer Science.
Teachers would actually call me when they were concerned about his behavior or school work.
I appreciated that. As parents we don’t always know what is going on with our kids while they are in high school.

If you are thinking about sending your children here, you may want to think twice if they cannot get into IB, AP or, as these people call it, the «tech» program, because there are plenty of downsides to be aware about that isn’t sugar coated for future kids to come.
I’m an a alumni of troy high school and me and my friends were unable to get into any of the AP, IB or tech programs and that REALLY was a problem. Although nothing happens if you can’t get into any of these programs, you can be assured that your children will be restricted into taking classes that almost any other high school can give to non-​AP, IB students as well, which is incredibly unfair for students who wish to take these classes but can’t; In fact, classes not academic like introduction to film making, while granted to almost any student in other schools, is denied to students who aren’t in any programs. Academically the school does very well, but they aren’t sharing that same academic privilege to some, if not, most kids.
I liked Troy high, but not enough to give it even 3 stars, because I was allowed to take only about 20 classes, while students at other schools can at least take 50.

You have got to be kidding me – you can review high schools here on Unilocal,too? Seems bizarre, but hey, here I go!
I loved almost every day of my four years here. As a matter of fact, I didn’t start appreciating this place as much until I really got to talking to some other folks about their own high schools. This place gives you the best education that tax money from local property owners can buy! No joke – it’s better than almost every single private school out there and yet tuition is a big fat zero.
I got into Troy by sheer luck since I was one of those commuters (from Pomona) and first came on a big bus that was chartered by a bunch of parents. We finally moved to Fullerton my sophomore year and that added a lot of time back into my day where I could feel more normal again.
If you’re a Troy IB/​Troy Tech/​AP student, there are a lot of expectations riding on you but they will instill a work ethic in you that will last a looong time. Sports here are fun – I played four years of varsity girls basketball, three of them under the now legendary Kevin Kiernan who collects coaching trophies like postage stamps. Looking back, I wasn’t good by any stretch of imagination but that doesn’t take away from many fun, grueling and exciting days of games, practice and field trips.
Many, many favorite teachers and staff here. Very few not so good ones. But hey, names won’t be named and no details will be disclosed.
Both my little brother and I went here and now my little nephew is starting in the fall. By the way, little brother just got his PhD a week ago and you bet your monkey that Troy had something to do with that! Love this school :))))))
