Legitimately one of the best(if not THEE best) spots in town for Indian grub. Big portions. Quality-made and very delicious.

Not too familiar with Indian food, but what I have had I’ve loved. Came here for the first time and wasn’t sure what to expect with the restaurant being inside of the store. Approached and saw a sticker saying people love them on Unilocal.I read some of the reviews for this place beforehand so I figured it wouldn’t disappoint. As soon as I entered, a man came up to greet me. I continued walking into the back to get to the restaurant. You can’t really see it from the front. I looked at the menu and reaffirmed my decision to get the Butter Chicken. There were a few diners inside eating. I asked if they did to go orders and he said yes so I placed my order for the Butter Chicken(comes with Basmati rice) and two orders of Roti(1 piece per order). He asked if I wanted it medium or spicy. I was leaning medium, but I asked how spicy their spicy actually was. He said they didn’t make things too spicy so I said why not and got spicy. He said he’d tell them not to make it too spicy though. He told me I could walk around the store and look since it’d take about 10 minutes. They say you shouldn’t go grocery shopping while hungry. I didn’t know what a lot of items were, but I did see some delicious snacks and browsed through spices and things I knew. I was tempted, but I left with just my lunch. The Butter Chicken was actually mild and not spicy at all. I wasn’t too disappointed since it was still very flavorful. I do like spicy foods, but if something is too spicy it’s uncomfortable to eat. They gave me a spoon to eat with instead of a fork. The butter chicken is very liquidy so I could see why and was glad they provided a spoon. I wasn’t too worried about the lack of fork and once I started eating the chicken, it was so tender it fell apart easily with the spoon. I love rice and was glad it actually came with rice. The Basmati rice is more flavorful than regular white rice. You need rice or some time of bread to sop up all that saucy goodness! Even with the rice and my two pieces of Roti I still had a bunch of liquid leftover. I’d recommend this place if you’re looking for some casual Indian dining or take out. Or even looking for Indian spices and groceries. They’re friendly and welcoming which is nice when you’ve never been there before. I will return in the future. The area is pretty sketchy as I people watched on my way in and out of the store.

I’m gonna give this place a balanced 2.5 stars. Its more of my fault than the food. Let me explain, I know myself to be unfamiliar with Indian food but try to force myself to try it. Flat out truth IS, I don’t like curry very much. Not that I don’t eat curry but very moderately. And if all Indian food is this strong with curry, I’m gonna cross it off my list. So that is why I don’t blame the food. I blame myself for not being able to tolerate curry, knowing that Indian food is curry based. Guess what I’m saying is the flavor is definitely there but I can’t get passed the amount of curry. As I’m eating, it seems like if I sweat it would smell overwhelmingly of curry. Try this place for yourself, don’t let this review carry too much weight because if u like curry, u just might love this place.

Always fabulous! The staff is so friendly and gives generous portions. The rest of the market has everything you need to make your own Indian dishes at home. Still the samosas are fabulous for any occasion when you need a stellar surprise!

Took a pit stop at Fresno while returning back to LA from Yosemite with friends. Glanced at the Indian restaurant scene in Fresno on Unilocal and decided to visit this place. This is one of those places which is primarily an Indian grocery store with a small restaurant area — typical Indian mom & pop store. Was amused to find things such as carrom boards and even Dholaks for sale — I reckon that’s how you measure the Indianness of the restaurant. Btw this location gets full 5 stars on that scale: P The server(which I believe was the owner too) was very pleasant. Ordered Veg Thali, Fish pakora(Excellent — fresh fish, perfectly battered, crunchy and not at all greasy), Dahi Bhalla(Average) and finished it off with tea(Didn’t like it). The Thali comes with Subzi(I ordered Okra — delish), Daal makhni(very nice and quite homely), Naan(it was more of a Paratha, very filling — excellent), Plain Basmati Rice and plain yogurt. Overall the food was quite good. It had all the elements of a hearty, authentic, homely cooked Indian meal. 1 star short on my rating is because of the price. For a small restaurant within a grocery store, the prices were quite high.

In my opinion, this place has the best Indian food in the Fresno area. The owner is always around and is a really nice guy. In fact, everyone working in the place is friendly. They go out of their way to let you know that they appreciate your business. The dining room is small and informal. You have to pick up your own food when they ring the bell. Personally, I like it better than being served. For one thing, you don’t have to tip.(I admit it. I’m cheap.) But I usually put a dollar or two in the jar for the kitchen staff anyway. This is not the place to go for atmosphere. While the dining room is clean and has beautiful Indian posters on the wall, it is very informal: not a place to impress a first date. But on the other hand, if my date was offended by its informality, I would think that this isn’t the right person for me anyway. The portions are small but perfect for people who don’t like to eat large amounts of food in one sitting. I don’t like to eat large meals because they get me drowsy. I really like their rice that come free with every entrée. I’ve actually split an entrée with my son by just adding an order of bread. This is a great place for people on a budget who want the exotic taste of Indian food. The Butter chicken is my favorite dish, but in all honesty, I haven’t tried most of their other dishes. I found that ordering mild in this place is too mild. I noticed that most people order hot and now I know why. Even ordering medium was too mild for me.(And I usually don’t eat very hot food.) But the best thing about this restaurant is that their food is consistently fresh. In other restaurants, sometimes the food is fresh and other times it has a leftover taste, like it was sitting in the refrigerator. This never happened to me at «Standard Sweets & Spices.» You’ll need reservations on weekend evenings. There is an Indian grocery store in front of the dining room. Don’t pass this up. I’ve found some absolutely fantastic Indian desserts in this grocery store. I’m hooked on «Punjabi Peanut Gachak.» It is loaded with peanuts and isn’t over sweetened like some Greek and Armenian desserts. There is a large variety of Indian delicacies in the grocery. If you are unsure what to buy, ask the owner. He will patiently describe each product.

Ordered the butter chicken, chicken curry, and chicken Tikka. Food was good and prices were food for the portions. Owners was friendly and checked on us to make sure everything was ok. Only knock was it seems like the amount of food wasn’t consistent since we ordered a second butter chicken that seemed to have less chicken than our first order.

I was really hyped about coming to this place due to all the shining reviews. Perhaps I was a bit overhyped, because I didn’t feel like it’s the /best/Indian in town, but it was still rather delicious. If you’re curious, the restaurant is in the back of the store, which is interesting to peruse while you wait. The man who worked there was extremely friendly and nice, I have positively no complaints about customer service or speed of service! The menu(which there is a photo of on here, and it’s still accurate) is a bit limited compared to other restaurants in town, but it made it easier to order. We got the lamb curry, buttered chicken(mostly because that was one of the hyped dishes on here), garlic naan, a mango lassi, and ras malai. Both meat dishes came with a full container of basmati rice, so that’s definitely an extra perk. I was more than satisfied and full after we ate(we got it to-go). Breaking it down: the mango lassi was tasty, but the consistency wasn’t the best, it still had little chunks of ice in it. The garlic naan was fantastic, no complaints there! The lamb curry was definitely better than the butter chicken in my opinion — the latter was a bit bland, maybe it would be better if we had gotten it spicier(we got both dishes medium). The real star was the ras malai — it was sweet and delicious, and a good sized portion too. I would definitely go back for that alone, but for a general meal of Indian food, I still prefer a couple other locations in town(especially since they don’t have any korma :(). Regardless, I would recommend this place, especially if you’re in the area, since I feel like this part of town is a bit devoid of good restaurants. Give it a try!

Let’s start by saying the best naan I’ve ever had. I also ordered the mango shake and Shahi Paneer, everything was very good. The owner was super friendly and served us minutes before closing. Very clean and there is a fun indian market attached to the restaurant. Will be back next time I’m in Fresno.

Being Indian I have the ability to say what Indian food is «supposed» to taste like and what is catered for the masses. What I can say about this place is that it is nearly as authentic as authentic can get. Ordered a variety of things including the samosa channa(which was delicious), chicken tikka, butter chicken, and garlic naan. The food was freshly made as I was watching the two ladies in the back make everything. I was most excited to try the butter chicken and was not disappointed. The generous portion with the basmati rice was great for $ 10. My only complaint was their rendition of chicken tikka which was not spicy at all and included bell peppers for some reason. I felt the absence of spice and addition of bell peppers made this dish forgettable. Garlic naan was amazing. Overall worth coming here if you want as close to authentic Indian food.

I am not an expert on Indian food, having only ever tried it once or twice, so take my review w/a grain of salt. With that said, I had been having a strong urge to go and try it again after seeing a fellow trusted Unilocaler post a pic of their Butter Chicken. I was told by this person that this would probably be the dish for me to try first, since I was a newbie, because that it was not overwhelming in terms of spice etc. On this day, I had originally had another place in mind to go. However on my way to said place, I had remembered this particular location and saw that the ratings/reviews were very favorable– so I made a detour and came here. I already knew that this place was in a strip mall, and it was more of a grocery store type of setting vs. a sit down restaurant. I was really blown away at how welcome they made me feel, and that the food was restaurant quality. I also loved the fact that so many people had posted pics here on Unilocal,so that I was able to walk right in and know where to go order the food. I walked to the back, where they have an order window and a few tables set up for dine in customers. I was at first unsure how to order(do I go to the window, sit at my table and them take my order, or order from the guy at the counter) but luckily I didn’t have to wonder to long, as the guy working there came back to help me and take my order. I ordered the Butter Chicken(you can choose spice level, I opted for mild), Samosa Chana app and a Mango Lassi… all things I have never ordered before. My order was put in and made fresh, I could see the woman preparing my food from the little window in the kitchen. My food was brought out, and they guy who had taken my order even brought me a little selection of their sauces that I failed to see on the counter. He took the time to explain what they were and made a recommendation as to which sauce would compliment my dish. The Butter Chicken lived up to its name and was very buttery, as well as mild. My one and only regret is that I did not get just a tad bit more heat added… other than that, no complaints. The chicken was in nice big and SUPER tender chunks. There was plenty of sauce, and it was nice to take that and drizzle over my rice which was also cooked perfectly. I had ordered some Garlic Naan, and that was some of the best that I’ve had. The Samosa Chana were pretty amazing as well. I didn’t know what to expect with these, as I’ve never ordered them before. An order(2pcs) only cost $ 2.99, so why not. The menu said that they are filled with potatoes, peas, spices etc and fried in a some sort of puff pastry. They were delicious to say the least, and they really went well with the cilantro/mint sauce. My Mango Lassi was good, a sweet and thick yogurt type of drink. I wasn’t sure at the time of ordering if I would like it(trial and error) so the guy who waited on me was nice enough to walk up to the front of the store and get me a Pepsi. Service was wonderful, and is worthy of 5 stars alone. Prices are reasonable, portions are good, the food is fresh and delicious… I would highly recommend this place!!!

I love Indian food no matter what but this place was such find! I loved that it’s a small local business and the menu is nice and simple. The naan is the best naan I’ve ever had and after we went the first time we couldn’t wait to go back. We’ve tried a few different dishes and they have all been amazing. The wait time is very short. You walk up and order and it’s maybe a 10 minute wait for delicious Indian food. Can’t wait to go back!

Been here for the food-wonderful. Perused the grocery store and left with housemade yogurt, paneer and ghee all at a reasonable price. This little place is a gem and Fresno is so very fortunate to have it. Plan on going back for the gigantic tub of turmeric powder. Be smart. Shop here.

Absolutely the best Indian food in Fresno! The owner is super friendly, the cooks are amazing and the prices are very reasonable. I have nothing whatsoever negative to say about this place! I am vegetarian and so I can’t really review the meat items(although meat-eating friends have raved about the butter chicken) The samosas are to die for, the naan is incredible(especially the garlic naan) Love, love, love the aloo gobi and the chaat is savory and sweet… Do yourself a favor and visit this little restaurant — which double as an Indian grocery store!

I love trying out new places when i used to live in Vegas. After moving here in Central Valley recently, food hunting that really hits the spot is quite disappointing for me. There’s nothing much around. Back home, my «job» is trying out hole in a wall places because that’s where you could find amazing and authentic dishes. I love Indian food and i constantly crave it once in a while. I had this craving again and we don’t have it in Lemoore/Hanford area. Found this grocery store on Unilocal with surprisingly good reviews so decided to give this one a try! And without any hesitation, it has to be one of the best ones that i’ve tried so far. It may be the only one that i found around the area, but it beats the several Indian restaurants that i’ve tried in Vegas. It’s definitely a hidden gem because the restaurant is right in the back side of a grocery store. It’s pretty small but it serves it’s purpose. The menu is straight forward and it has descriptions of every dishes, if you have no idea what to get. Small seating capacity, even though we went on a weekend, it wasn’t packed at all. My partner and i got the buttered chicken, chicken tikka masala, garlic naan and each of us got mango lassi. The chicken was buttery and it melts in your mouth, fork tender meat! Mango lassi tastes very fresh with the right amount of sweetness. We had a small meal prior to going there and we were still able to finish the whole thing! The portions are good enough(for me personally) and if you don’t have a big appetite, i think the portion would be a little too big for you. I’m so full but i couldn’t stop eating it. It’s just so good. After dining, we went straight to the grocery store to buy our staples: spices and ghee! My overall experience was definitely amazing and i’m coming back again.

We found this place through Unilocal while on our way to Yosemite. And it was awesome. We ordered gobi paratha, chole bhatura, dahi Bhale and puri chole. Everything was good and very well made. Everything we ordered came with side of yogurt. Out of everything we ordered I loved the paratha. I have not had such good paratha for long. Would be back for sure and would recommend the place to anyone who likes Indian food.

Authentic is an under statement. If you wondered what it was like to go to India, stop here. Sweets, snacks, spices and their fresh made dinner which is made in back rocks.
