I was craving sushi and a friend suggested this place. It was very clean and well designed inside. There was a separate area for hibachi and a long counter of sushi as soon as you walk in. My friend and I took a table and were quickly overwhelmed with the menu. There were almost too many choices to choose from. I decided on the 6 piece sweet potato roll and a meal called the ninja roll. It consisted of spicy mango, avocado, salmon and shrimp inside 8 rolls. It was something I’ve never had before. Filling yet pretty good. My friend ordered a couple things off the a la Carte menu. One of which was the sea urchin roll. It was disgusting. I spit my first bite right out. Other than that, my experience here was okay. I wasn’t overly jumping for joy to try something else. The air was blasting so we were cold the entire time but the staff was pleasant, the water boy constantly filled up our drinks, and the prices were reasonable.

I was not happy here at all. The Sushi wasn’t fresh, had a fishy smell to it. The place smelled like straight bleach when we walked in, would NOT have the sushi again!

I love their specialty rolls. Every time I go, my bf and I get two new rolls. I have never been disappointed! Highly recommend for a date night or girls night out! Great atmosphere as well.

This is my second time coming here. Both times the sushi has been fresh and tasty. We ordered the tiger roll and hot lover roll and enjoyed our meal. Never tried the hibachi but may try that next time. If you want a solid sushi meal come to mahzus

Hubs and I checked this place out last Friday night. It offers hibachi, sushi and other Asian foods. We just ordered one of their sushi meals. Probably the worst sushi we’ve ever had. Our favorite roll is the eel avocado: it was cold, gummy and crunchy in the wrong way. The yellowtail sushi was so bland and chewy. Tuna sushi did not taste fresh. Service was fine and it’s nice that it’s BYOB. I found the décor a bit tacky with all the bamboo. The hibachi tables in the back area were a bit loud. Most of the tables were filled, so maybe their sushi was just off that day or their other food is better? Not likely to go back there, which is a shame b/c it’s the nearest sushi place.

Came here for lunch and ordered a miso soup and spider roll. Soup was not very hot and small. Rolls were nothing to brag and doesn’t look fresh either.

Mahzu is definitely one of my favorite sushi restaurants around my area! They have a huge variety of their own creative sushi rolls and the sushi are always fresh. I love fresh fish, and the proportion between the fish and rice is on point. Not too much rice, not too much fish! Of course, they also serve platters of sashimi presented in a beautiful, rainbow color masterpiece of slices of raw fish! It’s so pretty that I don’t even want to eat it sometimes, but once I put one in my mouth, I can’t help but to devour the rest! This restaurant is also known for its hibachi. I’ve been here several times for hibachi for my friends’ birthdays. The chefs have their ways and know how to get the laughter out of us! The chef is very skilled with doing tricks with their spatulas and cooking tools and, of course, cooking a tasty meal! What more can you ask, good food plus good entertainment!!? That’s heavenly! The ambiance and décor gives me the Japanese feel! They have wooden tables, arches, bamboo plants, and those paper dividers/curtains! Very well designed and organized!

I was very unimpressed by the sushi here. Thy seemed to use avocado as a blanket on every roll! Sushi wasn’t cold enough either. For the prices– the quality didn’t match up.

Nothing to get excited about — below average sushi quality and preparation. I was coming to this place fairly often but have now selected new sushi places to dine. I think the quality is questionable at best. The preparation needs improvement, for example the spicy tuna has way to much mayo. A few of the special rolls lack the correct texture and seem heavy(meaning to much sauce applied). I generally go heavy on ordering tuna and the quality had me concerned on several sashimi cuts. I left those behind on the plate more than 1 time that I ate lunch here. I generally do a Sat or Sunday sushi lunch at this place going back a year and I see a steady drop in quality since my first visit.

Just went there for Father’s Day, hibachi wasn’t that great, but their sushi was good! I ordered the steak and lobster hibachi… Lobster wasn’t fresh and my noodles tasted funny. Their sushi is great! But stay away from hibachi.

Solid sushi in Freehold isn’t that hard to come by, so why go to Mahzu? Authenticity and attention to detail, that’s why. Never had a bad meal at Mahzu(except the uni, which is sea urchin — not for me!). Nobu is the head sushi chef, and he does a stellar job — he is a master at his art and friendly and personable as well! It might be a little pricier than some other Freehold sushi places, but you get what you pay for. Highly recommend the Hot Lover Roll — trust me, you won’t be disappointed.

Average run of the mill central jersey sushi and hibachi spot. I liked the sushi better than the hibachi. The hibachi scallops were terrible– tiny, fishy, and just not good. Chicken, shrimp, and steak were fine. I felt the chef used a little too much butter on the rice and noodles. The vibe isn’t very comfortable and we felt very rushed. The waiter kept trying to take the plates before we were done which was very annoying. He also didn’t bring out little soy sauce dishes for the sushi which is irritating when you’re hungry and want to dive right in and start stuffing face. All in all I’d go back if I was desperately craving sushi and was in the area, and I’d probably just take it to go.

I’ve been to countless hibachi/Japanese restaurants and I would say Mahzu is your average, typical hibachi joint. There’s really nothing overly special or different about Mahzu compared to anywhere else. The staff is very attentive and the hibachi chefs are fun, but in my opinion there are much better choices in the county or surrounding area. They’re also dime-a-dozen it seems in New Jersey, so it may just come down to convenience. Nonetheless this is still a great restaurant to hit up if you’re in the mood for sushi, hibachi, or other Japanese entrees. Food has always been consistent and delicious. In fact, compared to the first time I went to Mahzu several years ago, I think the food quality has become a lot better. The lunch specials are also a great way to get a lot of food for cheap. You’ll never leave hungry. Three stars for the overall restaurant, four stars for food quality and service.

Very solid sushi place in Freehold /Manalapan. We were seated immediately, and ordered 3 rolls, all of. Which we were very pleased with. The total bill ended up being under $ 50 for 3 rolls and 2 soups plus tax and tip. Totally worth checking out if you need a solid sushi place in he Freehold area.

I really didn’t enjoy this place. We got the avocado salad which looked like someone threw it on a plate. The treasure island was good tasting, but the presentation was lacking as well. The spicy tuna rolls were mediocre. The hot lover roll was terrible, it was so mushy, had no flavor and the shrimp tempura seemed questionable. I was surprised at how many people were in the restaurant after 8pm. I would rather get Fusha at a cheaper price.

this review is just for the sushi/sashimi, as i did not have hibachi at this particular location(although i can say that the hibachi in the east windsor, nj location isn’t bad… about average). our food came out relatively quickly and it was absolutely beautiful. however, it tasted a little bland. the fish for the sashimi was cut pretty thick, and the bright, delicate flavors i look forward to seemed to be missing. nothing was bad or unfresh, but it just wasn’t spectacular. my favorite was the treasure island appetizer(see pic): an avocado half with chopped raw fish, spicy mayo sauce, and tobiko. the roll variety is nice, i would consider this place pretty average as far as food is concerned. décor is minimal but clean. prices are a little higher than average. overall not bad– i’d eat that appetizer again, but it wouldn’t be my first-choice sushi stop!
