It is really a shame that there aren’t more Carvel shops in Virginia. In NY they are everywhere and it is some of the best ice cream around. Sure, there are places like Coldstone and Brusters, but there is something about the classic Carvel soft ice cream that I just absolutely love. Then there are the flying saucers and the ice cream cakes — oh, and their shakes! Oh man, now I’m jonesing for some Carvel! I was thrilled to find that there was a Carvel relatively close to where I live. It’s not the nicest looking shop in the world, but I’m there for the ice cream, not the ambience. And luckily, unlike pizza or bagels, ice cream is just as good out of NY as it is in it. I got my favorite — soft chocolate ice cream with hot fudge and chocolate crunchies, and I was in Carvel heaven. Just an observation — my brother always loved the Fudgy the Whale ice cream cake so we always get it for him as his birthday cake. We’ve noticed over the years that Fudgy has gone on a diet and is now more of a guppy than a whale. Sad.
