Wonderful food. Great service. Casual dinning at its best.

Not the best or most authentic bbq, but consistently really good. The mon– wed specials are a great value. Terrific staff, we love to sit at the small bar and eat. Plus, they have parking(we walk, but not everyone is lucky enough to live downtown).

Great BBQ — my family loves this place. My personal favorite is the Gumbo.

Really loved Black Hog when it first opened on Market Street. However, it feels like the quality of the food & size of portions have gone down, while the prices have gone up. There are just too many other options for good restaurants in the area to spend time at Black Hog.

Excellent pork shoulder/Carolina chopped, coleslaw, and corn bread. I can’t help but get the same thing almost every time I am here – it’s that good. I’m a bit of a BBQ snob and I love this place! Good music(not live) and good beer.

If you find yourself visiting Historic Frederick, MD, be sure to stop by Black Hog BBQ in the downtown area. Frederick, MD is not one of the traditional BBQ hot spots such as Tennessee, North Carolina, or Texas, but surprisingly the ‘cue at Black Hog is spot on. I sampled the ribs, regular brisket, and the Arkansas Style brisket. The ribs were good with a nice spice rub, but probably needed a bit more time in the smoker; but they were moist and came off the bone easily. The regular brisket was okay, but IMHO, a bit on the dry side. Nothing a bit of the house BBQ sauce couldn’t fix. As a side note, I’m not a big fan of the NC style sauce, because of the heavy vinegar base, but the house BBQ sauce was excellent — a good balance between sweet/salty and good thickness for dipping. The Arkansas style brisket was fantastic. The burnt ends of the brisket were crisped up and then slathered with the house BBQ sauce. All the meaty goodness of brisket with a bit of char and then combined with the sauce made for heavenly bite. The sides did not offend, but complemented the meat, as they should. I suggest trying the beans and rice and the collard greens. Seating is very limited in the dining room, but it’s worth waiting for for a table, since you will want to eat the food while it’s hot, and not reheat it upon returning home. Good ‘cue without having to hop onto a plane.

One of my favorite BBQ joints period(and my husband is from Texas). The downtown location is about 1000x better than their location by Wegmans. My favorite is the two meat platter and I’m a big fan of their brisket and pulled pork. Service is great and they’ll happily provide you with containers to carry sauce with.

I was extremely pleasantly surprised by how good this place was. To be honest, I hadn’t really heard anything about it. I only found it by accident. My boyfriend at the time and I both love barbecue so we figured we’d give it a try. First of all, this is my favorite type of restaurant. It’s the type where you just walk up and order and they bring the food to you. Classier than fast food but cheaper and faster than a typical sit down. And the food was phenomenal. I loved it. There were a variety of meat options and then a number of delicious barbecue sauces. I seriously loved it. And they serve beer… who doesn’t like a place with beer? This place is 100% worth your time

Hands down one of our favorite restaurants in Frederick so far. It seems like we have tried BBQ all over the state of MD(which seems like an oxymoron in itself — MDBBQ but whatever), and this one definitely is head and shoulders above all the rest. If you are in MoCo, it’s definitely worth the drive to Frederick county. Live a little. Pretty much everything we have tried over the course of multiple visits is succulent and delicious. Our go-tos are the pulled pork shoulder, the Carolina chopped, and the ribs(wet, of course). The smoked sausage was also very good. One thing that I never really thought was as up to par was the brisket, but other people swear by it so… I was floored by the burger — it was juicy, flavorful, and absolutely perfect. The sides are also amazing. I haven’t had better potato salad in my life, I swear. We also favor the mac and cheese and the sweet potatoes. Reminds me that I need to branch out and try some of the others because I’m sure they will be just as good. Service is friendly but not overbearing and very fast. This place is a true downtown Frederick gem.

The food was delicious, great quality, and definitely not overpriced. I would go back if ever in the area. However, I really wanted to write this review because I accidentally left behind at the restaurant an item that I had purchased at a downtown vendor earlier in the day. I called, and the staff were happy to both look for and retrieve the item for me. They kept it behind the to go counter until I was able to pick it up. It was extremely courteous of them to do this, and I really appreciate them going above and beyond for a customer. Thanks again!

Super good — go with a friend, get Arkansas brisket and beef brisket platters with fries and any other side and you’ll be glad you did. Service is consistently great — you might wait a few minutes for a table at lunch, but it’s worth the wait.

I’m a sucka for bbq. especially pulled pork. it just might be my cocaine. so when I was in Frederick and heard about this place, I couldn’t resist. it is off the beaten path a bit. but sometimes the best places aren’t where most people go. somehow, that makes them better. this is the case with black hog. I was surprised to see they also have their own brand of beer when I walked in. however, I can’t speak to how good it is since I was driving and did not partake of it. I looked over the menu and quickly ordered a sampler platter. because sometimes when it comes to bbq it’s hard to decide on just one type of meat. the service was fast, even though it has a relaxed atmosphere. something I appreciated since I was running a bit late for an appointment. the pulled pork, brisket, and ribs were mouthwateringly wonderful. meaty, juicy, and flavorful. seasoned to perfection. too bad they couldn’t hook me up to an IV of their protein.

Beer and BBQ. What more could you ask for??? After visiting Flying Dog Brewery, my husband and I decided to have dinner in downtown Frederick. At the recommendation of Unilocal and the bartenders at the brewery, we went to Black Hog BBQ for dinner. It’s a small restaurant on the main street in downtown Frederick. It smelled amazing when we walked in; you can smell the spices coming from the kitchen. We were greeted and seated immediately. I decided on sweet tea(couldn’t resist) to sip on while we perused the menu. At Black Hog, there are options for different BBQ sandwiches, platters, as well as more expensive items such as ribs. There are also a variety of sides to choose from. My husband and I decided on platters which comes with your choice of sides and cornbread. I ordered the pork shoulder with coleslaw and mac and cheese; he ordered pork shoulder and pulled pork with mac and cheese, baked beans, and cornbread. BBQ sauce comes on the side; there are also house made sauces at each table– along with plenty of napkins– a necessity at barbecue places in my opinion. Our food came out relatively quickly, which is a good thing because we were hungry. The pork shoulder was awesome! I loved the crust, the meat was flavorful, and not dried out. The sides were delicious– the macaroni and cheese and cornbread were my favorites– I just wished the slice of cornbread was bigger; I could’ve eaten more of it. Prices are reasonable for BBQ and for the area. We had great service throughout our meal; our server checked on us and made sure we had what we needed. If you want good food and a relaxed vibe– Black Hog is a good bet.

BBQ = 3.5 Stars Was heading to Rocky Gap Casino with two other friends and made a mid-way stop here for lunch. The BBQ is probably one of the best in the area, but isn’t the best that I’ve had. The portions are a bit smaller than what I’m used to, but will fill you up temporarily. I ordered the ½ rack of ribs, half of them were wet and the other half were dry rub. Surprisingly I liked the dry rub more because I was able to use the four bbq sauce bottles provided at the table. I was able to mix up the sauces and choose different options. With the wet rub, since it was already marinated in a sauce, it overpowered the bottled sauces. My boyfriend ordered the Arkansas Brisket, not the type of brisket we were expecting. Recommend ordering the Smoked Beef Brisket if you prefer the strips, however it only comes with about four pieces. Their sauces are the smoke factor at this BBQ joint, would probably come back if I was in the area again.

My husband and I decided to try this place for dinner on a Saturday night and we were very impressed. We went a little early… 5pm… and we didn’t have to wait for seating. The waitress immediately stopped by to take our order. We got the two meat meals… each…and tried the brisket, ribs, pork shoulder and pit ham. And of course the sides… of Mac n cheese, potato salad and fries. You can’t go wrong with any of them, honestly the best fries, just like boardwalk fries at the beach! The only area for improvement would be to have beers on tap. My husband got a bottle of beer, but draft would have been perfect with the barbeque dinner. Overall a great find and highly recommended!

I’ll just start off by saying that if you’re giving this place anything less than 5 stars you’re wrong! The meat was smoked to perfection, the sauces were the right balance and the sides amazing. Walked right in on a Saturday night around 8pm and were seated immediately. Great service and a wonderful atmosphere. Situated in the heart of the downtown with lots of friendly locals. Thanks for a great dining experience :)

Black Hog did BBQ right for us and our group last weekend! After wine tasting for the day in Mt. Airy, there is nothing like a well-done burger and some mac & cheese for ~$ 10 to just hit the spot! Talk about solid post-wine party. Staff is great, space is rather small but it works, and I don’t think you can really go wrong with some good ol’ BBQ… Right? :)

The next stop on my list of places to review around Frederick. I popped in here on a Saturday and was glad to see it wasn’t too packed; I could have sat inside comfortably but I chose outside seating, which is small but quaint. The inside of the restaurant seems cool enough but I wasn’t in there long enough to really check it out and give an opinion. As for the food, it was excellent. I ordered the Luke’s Burger(burger topped with your choice of smoked meat) and it was absolutely delicious. I got a side of the BBQ beans and they were just as good. My friend got brisket and sweet potatoes and while the brisket was awesome, the potatoes were a little too sweet. Our waitress was nice enough but didn’t seem to be very enthusiastic about work; it’s not a major issue but it doesn’t hurt to act like you like your job. Overall, the food is great and you won’t be disappointed in that area. But a few slip ups keep this joint from being five stars. 4⁄5

Hey you. What’s up. Let’s get some barbeque and a cold one and we’ll be good to go. Every time I drive into this part of town, I become like Pavlov’s dog going through conditioning and I start salivating at the thought of that aphrodisiac barbeque smoke diffusing through the air filters in my car. Yea, extreme, I know. Their smoked pork shoulder is so good that it’s a struggle to get anything else. But I managed to force myself out of the tried and true and give the ribs and wings a try, and I’m so glad that I did. The dry seasoning on the wings was interesting. I was terrified when the server walked over, with each wing drowning in a powder. My immediate thoughts went to my water cup — «is this going to be enough!?». Interestingly enough, the dry rub was not excessively salty, but rather sweet. My AIM username used to be sugarsweet1188 so honestly, it’s hard for me to think anything’s ever«too sweet». It’s different for sure, but it’s worth a try. There’s an unpaved lot with free parking in the back, but careful, if you’re in heels it’ll make for a very adventurous trek in the sloped gravel.
