I decided to take my grandson to Pepes after I found out it was under new ownership, I was really glad I did. The change in this restaurant is nothing short of amazing. It’s very clean with new seats and chairs and the food was great. My grandson had tacos and his words were these are the best ever! I had pork enchiladas and I think they were the best I’ve ever had. They have salsa that was fresh and full of flavor. The chips were served warm and tasted very fresh. Our server who was very helpful convinced us to try the fried ice cream and it was great. I love Mexican food and I highly recommend giving Pepes a try

So I’m going to start off by saying I’ve never been to a Pepe’s restaurant, so this review may only reflect the Frankfort location or maybe the entire chain. I don’t know. I ordered the three tamale platter and it was bland and incredibly dry. One of the tamales was so dried out, I couldn’t cut through it with a steak knife. The cheese they put on it was putrid and the salsa wasn’t so bad if they could cut back on the cilantro by half and maybe use some decent chips. The food was a complete let down, however the staff were excellent and very attentive. The food was brought out very quickly(which intrigues me how they had time to dry out those tamales so much). The restaurant was clean and well maintained, but I won’t be returning, purely due to the food.

The salsa is strange. I think it might be canned diced tomatoes with parsley? Flavor is just not part if the food here. There was 1 bottle of regular hot sauce on the table, so my meal ended up tasting more like the Old el Paso dinner kits mom would make as a kid. It still beats Mcdonalds for lunch.

Pepe’s was highly disappointing. To put it mildly, I’ve made better food in my fisher price kitchen set… and I was 6. The burritos had dark fatty meat that may or may not be up to code. The sour cream was hard, and the rice and beans had no flavor. The loud décor had me excited for bastardized Mexican food, but Pepe’s seems to fall short in all areas. The service was substandard until they learned that I was highly dissatisfied with my food, and then they wouldn’t leave me and my grandmother alone to pick at our food. Customers shouldn’t have to ask if it is actual chicken in a chicken burrito. I could’ve went to Taco Bell and had a better meal than what I received from Pepe’s.

We were staying at a nearby hotel and were told this place was good. We were terribly disappointed. The salsa was awful! It literally tasted like marinara. The queso tasted ok but was very thin. It was served with tortillas. I haven’t seen that before and still don’t get it. We were surprised when we got the bill at the cost of the queso and the rest of the food in general. $ 29 for 2 people. We both ordered quesadillas and both didn’t like ours. The rice and beans were ok. We wanted to order fried ice cream but decided not to because the service was so slow.

Horrible — $ 15.24 for a diet coke and fajitas which were supposed to be a lunch special. Barely any lettuce and was so wilted I wouldn’t feed it to a pet reptile. No hot sauces on the table — just corona bottles that were salt and pepper shakers. Salsa was way off in terms of taste. I wish that I had something good to say about this place. As a courier from Indianapolis I had a delivery to the local hospital in town and wanted to grab lunch. I got the impression that none of the employees had ever been to another Mexican restaurant before — or had even left town for that matter. I wish I could give a field trip to the owner and employees to a place like Taqueria El Maguey in Indianapolis. Add cilantro and additionally some sort of seasoning to the salsa. The steak portion was a positive aspect to the dish — the cuts were a little thicker than usual. I don’t know in this town what the resources in this town are in terms of fresh veggies like lettuce and tomatoes. I will say that while some of the waitresses were slow– I could tell just how hard the manager was trying to keep up with the service. The problem was that at the end of the day the fajitas plate that I got was several dollars more than what I am use to in many other establishments and the food flavor wasn’t up to par with that of even the average Mexican restaurant — but there is not any competition in this small town.

Pepe’s is your average Americanized Mexican chain restaurant. The service is hit and miss, the food is about what you’d expect, and the décor is pretty cheesy. We enjoy going there on occasion because it’s easy to take a large group and it’s pretty affordable. I almost always get the steak fajitas. I love their salsa — but I’m a cilantro lover. If you want authentic, don’t go here(you can get great tacos from the local Mexican grocery store). But if you’re looking for a decent place to have a family dinner, Pepe’s is a solid choice.

Run away! Where do I begin? I guess at the door. Three tables seated at the height of lunch hour and it took the hostess three minutes before she even noticed us waiting(thanks to a server). Second clue… a «Mexican» restaurant in a community with a large Hispanic population… NO Hispanic servers or patrons. Clue #3… the«salsa» was tomato sauce a bit of onion and a half pound of cilantro. Oh, did I mention it had NO spice? Nothing. Nada. Clue #4… I’ve seen better looking food in Toys R Us. The plastic kind. Clue #5… when I asked for hot sauce I was offered a brand I’d never heard of served in a Corona bottle or «packets» of Pepe’s sauce. I ordered a «chicken quesadilla.» First, it arrived in less than three minutes. Second, the chicken was diced for a toddler, and there was nothing resembling pico de gallo to be found anywhere. Finally, did I mention the cilantro? The other ½ lb not in the«salsa» was in gloppy chunks in my «quesadilla.» Lastly, the atmosphere was cheesy and seating resembled cheap 60’s throwback. I am not an advocate of fast food, but in this case I would say even McDonald’s is a better option when in Frankfort. ‘Nuff said.
