La Playita

Not flavorful Mexican food at all. I do however LOVE their shrimp cocktail. $ 10 for lrg. The best I’ve tasted and stuffs it with shrimp! Not stingy with the avocado either.
Happy hour 4 – 8, but they don’t tell you it’s little drinks so I ordered a mango margarita from the drink menu I had to ask for. Strong, but sweet with blue salt on the rim. $ 6 for that sucker thinking happy hour. Bummer.

3 stars for the food and 2 stars for ambience and service. My first tip for most any restaurant would be to play to their strengths. In the case of La Playita it is their seafood. I’m a big fan of sopas de mariscos (seafood soup). I went with the Caldo w/​crab and shrimp. I wasn’t disappointed. A Large bowl of a chile infused seafood based broth with an ample portion of sliced onions, carrots, celery and bay leaf surrounding a huge cluster of crab legs and 6 jumbo shrimp. It was garnished by chopped cilantro and a dollop of fresh pico de gallo. The soup was steaming hot enough to take your time to crack the crab and add all that delicious crab meat to the broth. Squeeze the half lime on top and soups on! I asked for some sliced avocado and jalapeños to add as well. Beautiful and delicious. The wife wasn’t feeling the seafood and went with beef fajitas. They were served sizzling hot with plenty of grilled onions and green peppers. Rice, beans, avocado and pico de gallo with tortillas accompanied the dish. They were short of excellent but the wife was happy enough to finish almost all.
The service was ok but the waitress who spoke perfect English had to deal with an unhappy customer which affected her attention to detail. After she dispatched the guy she apologized and was very attentive.
The restaurant has 5 TVs and on this Wednesday night all tuned to a Mexican soap opera. Too Loud!
My advice is to leave the gringo attitude at home and come for some really fine fresh seafood and you should be sympatico !
$ 30 including the Modelo and iced tea.

Big fan of the mojarra frita al mojo de ajo — but steer clear if you don’t want your food looking back at you! Pretty good portions too.

We wanted to try something different, so we went outside our normal Tex-​Mex and Taco Stand stomping grounds.
Oh, dear, the dice did not roll in our favor that day.
I want to pull the compliment-​criticism-​compliment trick to start and end on a good note when it comes to a review, but this is going to be an open faced sandwich because I can only think of one thing that was positive about this experience.
Let me first say that everyone working there was very friendly and attentive — the reason I give them two stars instead of one. The service was not the issue.
Everything else, however, was the issue.
For a place called «La Playita» with a menu boasting many colorful seafood selections, I was downright disappointed in the shrimp enchiladas. The margaritas just tasted of sweet and sour. Lastly, the food and alcoholic beverages were not worth the pricetag.
I wholeheartedly agree with Chris P.‘s recommendations of other places to venture instead.
So if you do decide to give this place a shot, my dear Unilocaler, beware.

The food was decent. The prices were a little high and I suppose the drinks were satisfactory. But we walked out of there with smiles on our face. Our random visit coincided with Karaōke night, which was different than anything I had ever seen. The MC walked out into the crowd, pulling folks to the front who were often unwilling at first. I didn’t know any of the Mexican pop songs, but it didn’t stop us from clapping along. There was a lot of joy in the room and we even joined the congo line that took on every patron. Ambiance goes a long way.

I have been here a number of times and while the prices can be a little steep, I truly enjoy the all seafood menu. It really makes deciding a challenge. From seafood salads and soups to seafood cocktails and dinners there is plenty of combinations. They even have chucked oysters… sometimes. The waitress are young and are not the best versed in the English language. They are nice though. All the drinks are served with salt so I order no salt. I wish they would pour my beer but they do not. I cant account for the rest of the reviewers here. I do like this place a lot.

Just… no. No, no no no. No. Was feeling adventurous and thought I would try it, and… no. Here’s where you should go for Mexican food within rock-​throwing distance INSTEAD of here: Tortilandia, Salsa Limon, Taqueria San Luis, Old Rip’s, Fuzzy’s. Yeah, Fuzzy’s, I went there.
2 stars instead of 1 because I feel sorry for them on account of the guy who reviewed it and hasn’t actually been.

I was not impressed. The menu had an interesting selection of items. This restaurant focuses on mexican seafood. The prices were kind of pricey for a Mexican joint.
I got the quesadilla plate. It was 3 quesadillas and beans and rice. The quesadillas tasted like somthing you would make at home by folding over a store-​bought tortilla. The beans had no flavor and the rice was pretty bland as well. The salsa was ok and the some of the chips were kind of stale.
The server was very friendly, but there are way too many other good Mexican restaurants in the area to go back to this one ever again.

This place is called La Playita now. Haven’t tried it yet.
