4-stars for tire repair. He also sells used tires. I went down the road to a well known chain store with a screw in a tire which had only 7k miles on it. They would not repair(patch) it and said it was too close to the sidewall. They said I needed a plug if it were to be repaired or a new tire. They said nobody really does plugs anymore. I went down the road to Data Tire which honestly is a small little corner shop that looks questionable in terms of providing personal safety — BUT — the proprietor was a very nice guy and I had him take a look. He said he would never plug this tire but would patch it. Upon further discussion I understood that because the way this particular tire was made and because it was a newer tire a patch should last about 20k-30k miles. Because of the type of vehicle I have I expect to only get about another 20k-25K miles out of the tire anyhow so I watched him patch the tire and 1,000 miles later everything is still perfectly fine. He told me even if he sold my type of tire he would not have tried to sell me a new one and would have recommended the patch instead. The screw was not THAT close to the sidewall and was still an inch or more into the tread area so if he was comfortable I was comfortable. He had other clients to service so my $ 15 tire patch was not making him any money… it was just providing good service. If anything changes with my tire I will update this post.
