Hickory Sticks BBQ

One of the best barbecue places I’ve ever been too! I really enjoyed my food and all of the employees were super nice. The food came out super quick and was hot and fresh. If I am ever back in town I will definitely make sure to come back!

What a disappointment. I decided to try this place out since my normal bbq joint was in the process of moving. Prices were pretty good, got a brisket sandwich with a side of onion rings for under $ 8. Had to wait a bit to get my food since they had to fry the rings. When my food was brought to me I was not blown away by the appearance. The brisket was very dry and lacked smoke and a nice crust, tasted like pot roast. I believe good bbq should not need sauce, but sauce was necessary to eat this since the meat was so dry. The onion rings were nothing special, simple frozen onion rings. Definitely will not return unless they can figure out how to keep their meat moist.

The 2 meat platter! She had sausage and pulled pork and I had brisket and baby back ribs. Her pulled pork was very fatty and her thin cuts of sausage she felt were
marginal & seemed like they were cooked days before! Her sides were a soupy bean dish with no spoon. It was tasty though. She said her collard greens were sweet! Said she never had collard greens she didn’t like until these. My ribs and brisket
Were just ok. My beans were very good and I tried the spicy Cole slaw. It was ok but a little to spicy for me. There were no napkins on the table. There was a dispenser on the wall. We were each served a portion of cornbread the size of
A ping pong ball. They were both doughy
Inside and two sweet. Never saw cornbread served like that. The exterior windows were dirty. No one stopped by and said how was your meal. And a manager was on his computer & saw us leave and didn’t say thank you! The fact we were the only ones dinning I guess speaks volumes! Couldn’t even squeak out two stars! Visit was June 12,2016.

My Hickory Sticks review on Unilocal — This is my first review. I just had to post about this awful place. I consider myself a bbq snob. I love good bbq and always struggle to find restaurants that really do it right. This place is in my neighborhood and i reluctantly gave it a try. I say reluctantly because i was already thoroughly let down by another fake bbq restaurant nearby. Hickory Sticks was another waste of my life. $ 15 down the drain. I got the baby back rib combo w «baked beans» and greens. I know for certain that the ribs were not homemade. They were the pre-​cooked variety that you get from the deli at the local grocery store. Who do they think they are fooling? They were decent but not made by these people. If i wanted that, i’d go to the grocery store! Beans were horrible. Greens were as well. And the corn cake was some mushy undercooked piece of crap. This place is a fraud and i don’t know how these faux businesses stick around, a hot mess!!!

I ordered from here yesterday. I got the pulled pork platter, the pork tasted good but over half of it was fat so that was pretty disappointing. The corn cake was so horrible. it was undercooked and just disgusting. Overall, very disappointed

Been a few times and always like what I get. This last trip I had an amazing Corned Beef Sandwich Reuben style. It was great, fresh cut chunks of homeade Corned Beef, which you don’t find anywhere. Usually it is just the Naitonal Deli Corned Beef, which is terrible. Also, always get the French fries. They have the best French fries in Broward.

Best real Barbecue in Pompano Beach. I have dined in, had take out, delivery and even catered events for 40 people and every time they are on point. I hope more people will get out and try this place. They are nice people and there food is prepared with a tone of love and care.

Couldn’t finish my food… and trust me — that rarely happens. Got take out today and I forced myself to eat enough to hold me over until dinner since I’m stuck in the office.
I feel so badly leaving this review but I would feel worse if you spent your money for BBQ and got this. I had a Brisket platter — it was a generous portion of meat but brisket tasted like it was made in pressure cooker, no flavor, lots of fatty meat and no smoke coloring around the edge. The baked beans were not baked beans– first, they were not cooked long enough because more than half of them were still hard and they had no flavor, no bits of anything other than beans in the sauce, not even a hint of BBQ flavor. The mac’n cheese was so bad that I can’t even compare it to the generic store brand box stuff– it was the right color but I think they used less than half of the cheese flavoring and then put a bit of real cheese at the end to make it look a little stringy when it’s hot. The meal comes with a cornmeal cake that was neither salty nor sweet or anything in between — it tasted like nothing.
Hubby had the ribs and he said they didn’t taste like they came from a BBQ place at all. He ate one bite of beans and one bite of the greens — they were bitter. He ate the meat and then tossed the rest… and this guy is pretty easy going when it comes to food. Ok I’m done, I’ve whined enough here.

Very disappointing tonight brisket was dry and tasted more like a pot roast and collard greens were cold. Too much competition around to be sub par.

Great food. Recommend the beef sandwich with a side of sweet potato fries! Recommend to anyone on cypress.

Hickroy Sticks on Cypress Creek! It’s a small Red and Yellow building. Service, food, friendly people can’t beat it. I’m new to Florida and this has been by far my favorite place to eat. It’s very casual place and the smell of the BBQ will draw you in. If it smells good, then the food is good! It’s a Must go to place!

Very casual BBQ and really quick. I have been there a couple of times now, greeted promptly and food consistent good. Nothing fancy here, just good BBQ and sweet tea!
Totally will be back, reasonable prices, nice lunch specials, a nice lunch stop.

Since Scrubby’s on University & Commercial closed this has been my go-​to BBQ place. Jack’s is another option, but a different style BBQ. Blue Willies is not an option, because the food there is terrible and tasteless.
It is basically the only place in the immediate area that I would actually call Texas-​style BBQ. The meats are really smoked and you can tell. They have nice smoke ring. They don’t have a heavy bark on the ribs, but the flavor is there. It is a little pricey for the amount of food that you get. But they are very fast getting your food out to you, so it is a perfect place for a quick lunch when you need to get back to the office for a meeting.
The pulled pork is my favorite, followed by the St. Louis spareribs. I have tried the sausage before, which tastes like a Polish Kielbasa, so I don’t order that anymore (not that I don’t like Kielbasa, just not at BBQ place).
I wish I could tell you something about the sides, but I always get a double order of the Spicy Coleslaw, because it is so freakin good.
There is very little different between their BBQ sauce and the Spicy BBQ sauce. I wish they would amp up the heat on the Spicy BBQ sauce.
SUMMARY
Food is good, consistent, fast to be served and they never get your order wrong. And the only real BBQ place in the area, so bumped it to 4 stars for all those reasons. Oh, um, and I come here a couple of times a month.

As far as ambience and look this what a BBQ place should look like. But not much follows after that! Every time I order from here the food is different. Sometimes it’s OK others it’s far from acceptable. I did have decent brisket here and the ribs can taste decent as well. I like the corn meal balls that taste like cornbread. Overall very expensive even for BBQ

I was not impressed with this location. For the same price as their other location I received half the amount of food. There was not the same smokey flavor to the meat and the meat was a bit mushy like it was over cooked. The side dish portions were meager. I ordered onion rings and received four onion rings wth??? Is that even a portion? I think not. Some food is served on regular plates some on paper plates. I don’t think BBQ with suace belongs on paper plates. I will not be returning when there better BBQ choices out there.

A complete & total disappointment. We were going to Blue Willies BBQ but they were closed. So we came here.
DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY COMING HERE. I have been to the one in Plantation & you get much more for your $$. Also the food was better in Plantation.
I had the house special platter with pork instead of turkey. So it came with brisket, pork, sausage & ribs. Nothing had any trace of smoky flavor. So with out any sauce it was all very bland. My sweet potato fries were good but my mac & Cheese tasted like Kraft from the box.
So I am done with Hickory Sticks. They have awards winning best BBQ at the the Seminole coconut creek blues, brews & BBQ. WHO DID THEY PAY OFF TO WIN THOSE AWARDS.

Quality & quantity versus $$ is just not there, they used to be good don’t know what happened.

This place is terrible. I am being nice with two stars. This is absolutely nothing like you will experience in South Carolina, Tennessee, North Carolina, Texas, really anywhere that there is good barbecue so do not expect that.
If you’re really hungry, they have food I guess at a minimum you can eat. My brisket was dry and not very flavorful I had to lather it in their crappy barbecue sauce in order to eat it. Onion rings are generic frozen out of the box, nothing appeared to be homemade and they had to Spanish-​speaking, not bilingual, people working. What an unfortunate experience

First time there for dinner (2 couples). The first thing we noticed while still outside was «This place smells like BBQ». Very small inside with a few tables. The others ordered the St. Louis Rib Platter (5 – 6 bones with 2 sides, they picked fries and collard greens) $ 11.95. Meaty ribs and fresh cut fries. Greens were too sweet. I ordered the Beef Brisket platter with 2 sides (also fries and greens)$ 13.95. Best brisket I have had other than my own. Tender and flavorful. They have 5 different sauces to choose from. This place is kind of pricey for the quantity of meat served but the quality is there. Including 3 iced teas @ 2.39 ea. the total bill was $ 59.36 without tax. Again, pricey but good. When in the area, I would go back for something different.
