Flat Hat is a great place for coffee and treats. They have every form of artisan coffee– pour over, in-house roasted, artisan espresso drinks, etc. I had a latte that was pretty good– not quite as good as Bindle or Harbinger but still comparable. There wasn’t anyone else in the shop when I came in so my latte was pretty quick. The barista was a young and friendly guy who seemed as if he knew what he was doing. It also wasn’t too expensive ~$ 3.50 for a latte. If you’re sold then stop reading and go and try this place, but I have more to note that only somewhat reflects on the rating of this place(3 rather than 4 stars) but shouldn’t be taken lightly. READ! I don’t think I’ll return– for two simple facts, by definition this is a museum coffee shop, and it can’t compete with closer coffee houses. By definition this is a museum coffee shop, and what I mean by that is Flat Hat is more museum than coffee shop. Flat Hat has 3 «walls» one of which doesn’t exist because it goes directly into the Museum(yes it is somewhat triangular shaped inside). It has ~2 tables, a bar, and museum workers and young children from the museum passing by loudly every few minutes so it really isn’t your lounge around place. The design and décor seems to have been closely monitored by the museum so that the coffee shop will blend in nicely. I struggle to find a culture or feel for Flat Hat because it inherently seems to be defined by the fact that it’s in a museum. Around the same time Flat Hat opened(Summer 2015) Bindle Coffee also opened. Now these are on completely opposite sides of town, but Bindle is on the side with no competition. Bindle was able to define it’s space and create a culture. Flat Hat unfortunately has to compete with Little Bird, Harbinger, Starry Night, Everyday Joe’s, The Bean Cycle, Café Ardour, and Starbucks(maybe) to name a few. Flat Hat has not defined it’s culture and I simply can’t find any reason to go to Flat Hat over any of the others. Unless I’m at the museum(another reason it’s a museum coffee shop) or in the local area, and am not willing to walk 5 minutes to Little Bird I will not be going to Flat Hat again.

Excellent drip coffee with full, rich flavor. I had to have a latte as well to complete the experience and it was amazing as well. The atmosphere is chill, the service was great and friendly. I highly recommend this place to any and all coffee snobs!

First time visitor and avid coffee drinker. Heard good things about this shop and finally had the chance to stop in, and I’m blown away. Shots pulled with incredible consistency and drip coffee had robust smooth flavor. Great friendly staff, very clean and laid back vibe. Relaxing location, just north of the chaos of old town. Can’t wait to come back!
