The store is small, and not at all new or modern. It is old enough to look rather dingy, actually, but it iS clean; just old. What makes it a good place to shop are the PRICES. You will pay $ 1.20 for crackers, not $ 1.60 — $ 1.90, like at Walmart supercenter. There is a freezer section with a lot of prepared foods and frozen raw meats/fish/shrimp much cheaper here than at country mart, Walmart etc. Save-A-Lot has far less selection in brand names; they mostly have a lot of store, and small time brands. They are considerably less expensive and almost always as good. The J. Higgs line of bagged chips and snacks cost at least 1⁄3 less than the big name brands like Cheeto’s & Dorito’s. Bread, tomato sauce, cake mixes, dairy… everything here is significantly cheaper. The only department I find lacking in quality, is produce. The fruit never looks very good, but potatoes, onions and the like are just fine. There is a good, if small, meat dept. Especially the packaged meats and hot dog section. WAYCHEAPER. I got a 10 lb. box of bacon 2 weeks ago for $ 26. That’s $ 2.60 a pound! Walmart’s was between $ 4.50 — $ 8 a pound. The bacon was prime, whole and thick cut — not bits and pieces! If you are the sort of person who would drop dead rather step into a thrift store, don’t waste your time checking this place out. Also be advised that if you want paper bags for your purchases, they are a nickel each at checkout. Otherwise, you can grab some(food packing) boxes up front and they’ll put your groceries into those for free. Since Save-A-Lot is so small, it is best used as a back-up to your local grocery store. I go here and shop what is available, then go on down to Country Mart or wherever to finish off my list. I really do Save-A Lot! ;) (Couldn’t resist)
