Las Tortas Locas is one of those places you could drive by 100 times and never know it was there. You ask me how I know this… :( With its mirrored windows and reclusive location in a dying shopping center, this restaurant is showing very little leg to entice new clientele. That didn’t seem to matter, though, when I finally stumbled upon Las Tortas Locas on a Sunday to find it packed with word of mouth diners. Las Tortas Locas is a counter service chain restaurant and compared to a lot of the other Latin American places on Jonesboro it is a little more ‘gringo friendly’. They accept credit cards and the menu is explained well in English. You order at the counter and can select from an array of tortas, quesadillas, huaraches, and tacos while enticing fountain machines bubble with aguas frescas in front of you. As a first time diner the most logical menu choice seemed to be the House Special Torta. What showed up to my table can only be described as one bad son of a gun. Served on a warm, lightly flaky, pillow of bread, the torta was jam packed with avocado, deliciously seasoned steak, tomato, crema, queso blanco, etc. The fact that they did the right thing and smeared the bread with refried beans before they added all those ingredients is all the proof anyone should ever need that there is still good in the world.
