Decided to stop by and have some steak. The restaurant has an old school feel, but I love the causal approach. We ordered two steak dinners. The dinners included soup, salad, and choice of starch. The hostess recommended the french onion soup and I must admit, it was tasty. I sampled the chicken and rice soup and it tasted like something I would have made(not a compliment). I’m not sure if it was the salad dressing or the water from the salad, but the dressing tasted watery. That pretty much ruined it for me. The filet minion was excellent. Tender, cooked appropriately, and a great size. The waitress seemed a bit snarky. Our drinks were only refilled once and the weak salad drop the rating from a 4 to a 3.

My family and I had been wanting to check this place out. Anticipation was building each time we went to try it out and it was closed. We finally got the chance to try it. Was wildly unimpressed. I got the beef stroganoff and was given big chucks of beef undercooked and didnt get any noodles. The atmosphere was cozy, hence the 3 stars. Also I recommend the French onion soup

We’ve been coming to GS for over 40 years and the place hasn’t changed a bit… that includes the food and the service, which are both excellent! Their Baked French Onion soup is the best I’ve ever had. Their steaks, salads, side dishes are all solidly delicious and so reasonably priced. We recently had a large group gathering there — because it had been too long since we visited this restaurant. Tammy was our server and she was amazing — so friendly, quick with our order and she made some great menu recommendations. She said she’s been working at The Steer for 18 years… a place that can keep their staff that long has to be doing something right!

We love it here. We exclaimed last time we were there that it is the best prime rib we’ve ever had — and this comes from connoisseurs. I think the atmosphere is throwback fun. Or you can go to one of the chains and have plastic food and service…

I never leave your disappointed, everything about is good. The ambience always the same. So what if the place is a little old looking, it is very yummy

Old school down to the décor that probably hasn’t changed since they opened. You know exactly what you get with this place, strong cocktails, good food(and a lot of it), killer onion soup and a certain Chicago attitude that cries out«this is who we are, if you don’t like it… tough.» They know how to cook a steak exactly like you order it, so come prepared to eat and eat well. Fish, lamb and liver and onions are all good too. Crowded on weekends but that’s only because it is good and a good value.

This place is definitely 70’s charm, you can almost see the feathered hair, Mrs Roper mu-mu dresses and Mr. Furley jumpsuits… wait, I think I did see a Mrs Roper look-a-like! A lot of the clientele may be nearing 70, but everyone there(except us) seemed to be regulars as many were greeted by first name. THAT is charm. You might think that Monday would be a dead night there but it wasn’t. We arrived at 6 to be only one of the few tables occupied but within the next hour the restaurant was full. And by 730, there were people waiting. The menu boasts appetizers, steaks, chicken and a bit of seafood. But what I love is that every main pretty much comes with soup, salad and a potato(served several different ways). But despite the many parts of the meal, we decided to also try the baked clams – so glad we did! They were garlicky, buttery and briny – hit all parts of the palate. I really enjoyed them. The French Onion soup, from what i understand, is the house specialty and I can see why. The thick layer of cheese on top is toasted to where the crispy bits stay crispy even when submerged in the soup. There are lots of caramelized onions and the broth hovers to an «almost salty» taste. It was delicious. The salad is your basic plain iceberg salad but the thousand island dressing I chose is definitely home-made, it’s tons richer than what you can get from a bottle. I opted for the steak Mediterranean style, despite the herbs, oregano and lemon it’s cooked in, it was still a little bland – salt helped. And the baked potato was perfect. These old-school places always do baked potatoes right! Always check the daily specials too. My husband got a steak and ribs special. I got to try one of the ribs and it was done well. There is a full bar but the wines are pretty much house-brand wines that you can get by the carafe or half-carafe. Our Merlot was weak-bodied but it felt so Ernest and Julio Gallo special. And my son loved his kiddie cocktail immensely! Service was wonderful. She heard me say my 4 yr old son’s name only once and every time she came to the table she asked him, by name, if he liked his drink, his steak, his potato, etc. I really appreciated that. And speaking of kids… there is no kids menu so if your kids are of the chicken nugget or mac N cheese only crowd, you are out of luck.

Come here for lunch for a screaming deal! Their steer burger is a ½ pound of hand-formed beef on yummy dark rye with the appropriate fixings. You also get perfectly fried and salted french fries for under $ 9.00. Why go to Red Robin? If you want to really get your freak on, try it with melted bleu cheese. Fantastico. Old school dining room and you have to love the huge sign out front. There is a reason this place has been around for over 40 years.

Huge fan of this unpretentious steak house located in an all brick building on a busy street corner with a large hanging sign featuring an outline of a bull…“Golden Steer”. Serving the area for over 40 years! I’ve passed it up a few times, so I always look for the sign in front. I’ve dined here at least five times as I used to live in the area. It is cozy with a simple, old school décor, not modernized in the least, but I actually enjoy the ambiance here… it feels ‘homey’. Parking is ‘off street’ so you may have to drive around a little to find a spot… but you will eventually. Every time I’ve made a reservation I’ve had to wait… at least 20 – 40 min. I know it can be a pain, but I don’t mind. The server’s are always friendly(most of them have probably been there for ages). I order a martini at the bar, and sip while I’m waiting. Cocktails are good!(not weak). Place is always busy and not a huge amount of tables… its not a big place, but I like that. I always order the prime rib, and I’ve never been disappointed. If you come on Fri or Sat wanting prime rib you get a baked potato, French onion soup AND a salad for under $ 30.00, that’s a great deal! Prime rib is nice cut, tender, cooked to my liking with au jus. I’ve been asked if I want the end piece or middle… I like mine a little red, but thanks for asking! They also have Roquefort dressing! Brownie points for that alone. The French onion soup is so damn delicious… lots of gooey cheese atop bread soaked onions and broth… my favorite place for this soup and served in a crock… you may be full after eating just this. The Fried Smelts were FANTASTIC! I’m a fan of these and have only had them when my mother fries these bad boys which is not often but I have to say… these were better than mom’s.(sorry mom). They were LARGE… fresh, meaty, lightly floured and fried to perfection. They brought over a huge plate of these and my friend & I devoured them… This was listed on their appetizer specials, not on the regular menu. If you like smelts, you must try them. Don’t eat these often so this was definitely a treat!

Love the old-school vibe of this place. It reminds me of the old steak houses from the 70s(like Tom’s Steakhouse in Melrose Park). A little-known fact is that Golden Steer has excellent fried chicken, which my two dinner companions and I ordered. Get the chicken with hash browns — they’re nice and crispy. You’re given four good-sized pieces of crispy chicken that are REALLY hot. Order the French onion soup as an appetizer: it’s probably the best I’ve had at a restaurant. You’ll also get a good-sized salad. Great place to relax with a drink, too. Definitely will be back.

Steer Far Away!!! Owner is a Pric$. Watched him at bar get Cherries with bare fingers into glass containing them, after clearing dirty dishes without washing hands. Bathroom was disgusting, no hot water. Reservations screwed up our time. This was our sixth time back, generally like the food. From the bitchy waitress to the I know everything owner to the poor reservation and over an hour wait, steer clear. They won’t be seeing me, my family or friends ever again. Cross this place off your list of places. For approximately $ 50 a person, I expect… no demand to be treated fairly and with respect. You can take your fifty years of restaurant experience and KMA!

What I hate the most about this place is that it made me have one less of an excuse to visit Chicago’s downtown which I really love. I used to go there for good steak, but why bother when I can cross the street and enjoy some of the best cuts in the city. I know for a fact their lamb chops and fried liver are the best in the city, bar none. Your servers will never agree to recommend you a dish. Why? Because everything is cooked to perfection otherwise it will not end up on the menu. So you can’t go wrong with whatever you go for. Super friendly staff, and a very cozy atmosphere. Even when the waiting list it too long, I would rather grab my meal to have at home than sit somewhere else. I really am very fortunate to be next to this gem of a spot. An easy 5* for me.

I had wanted to try this place for a long time. I was excited to finally find the time to go and try these steaks I had been hearing about. What a disappointment. I had the ribeye and I know it was grilled, but it was simply the toughest and most bland steak I think I’ve had at a restaurant. It might have just been boiled and then tossed on the grill for color. I spend a fair amount of time grilling and barbecuing for my family and my wife and kids all told me that we should have just cooked at home. Although there are all sorts of positive comments about the French onion soup, it was not very good. It tasted like beef broth with undercooked onions soaking in it. The server was cranky to us, but seemed to just gush over some others who came in and seemed like regulars. It was like it was a chore for her to give my son another glass of soda. I’ll not be going back because I can actually get a better steak at a chain restaurant like Outback or Longhorn. That is sad.

Hmm I don’t know about this place. So I guess they are best known for their steaks and considering I don’t eat meat, I probably shouldn’t be much of an influential opinion BUT I’ve eaten there a handful of times over my life with family and I just don’t think it’s that good, at least what I’ve had. I’m sure back in the day when I was a younger person and taken there, I probably had chicken or something which I totally don’t remember. I was there a couple of weeks ago and had salad and was rather pleased to see that they actually had a vegetarian pasta on the menu. I try not to eat pasta but I ordered it that night. The salad was pretty watery and the weird croûton thing tasted very oily or greasy. I didn’t finish it. The pasta was okay, but not anything special. Again, I know they’re not famous for pasta, but still. My husband(who does eat meat) ordered Grecian chicken for some reason. I have no idea why he didn’t seize the opportunity to get a steak. Probably because my Grandma was paying and he didn’t want to order something more expensive? Who knows. But he wasn’t a huge fan of his chicken. My guess is that had he ordered steak, he would’ve enjoyed it. I was told from a friend that they have a good red wine there, but sadly I didn’t try it. I was fighting a nasty month-long cold or sinus infection or something and was hacking up a lung the whole time I was in there. People were probably totally grossed out. It was my aunt’s 60th birthday so I couldn’t exactly not go. Yes, the décor is hilarious.

Great service and food! They have the best French onion soup ever! The prices are decent for the amount of food you get as well. Their blue cheese dressing has tons of real crumbles, which I love and the Saturday night bartender makes a great drink!

With all the great reviews, was hoping for something amazing here especially since I live a block away. I didn’t find it. First the good, for $ 20-$ 30 you get a full meal. None of this a la carte add-on crap. Service was also very good. Atmosphere? Dark and dingy and old, I didn’t like it, but some hipsters would eat it up. The bad. My steak. It was cooked correctly and looked good. I don’t think it was seasoned at all and all I like on steaks is salt and pepper. It was also very tough which was surprising since it looked medium rare. All I can think is that it was a low quality cut of meat since I went to Tony’s the next weekend and made some excellent steaks at home. This is what I counted off for. The steak is about all I care about at a steakhouse… The french onion soup. I don’t get it. Maybe it’s just me. So I didn’t count off much for it. The wine. I’m not sure what special we ordered that came in a carafe and maybe my expectations were too high, but I would not recommend getting it. I don’t really expect to try it again, but maybe someone will convince me to give it another shot.

I had read the reviews and thought I knew what to expect. Expect the unexpected. First, the entrance is located on Dunlop even though it has a Roosevelt Road address. Next, there is no hostess stand when you enter. You enter in the center, bar to the left, dining to the right. There is actually a dining table aligned with the round table that serves as the hostess stand. No windows, so it is dark. It has not been remodeled in at least 40 years, from what I could see. It is a local place with lots of regulars. Until a family came in with a small child, we were the youngest thing in there. I think a couple of the wait staff were wait staff at the Last Supper. They must really like their job. Food was okay. It was not the best steak I ever had nor was it the worst. It needed seasoning. The baked potato was steaming hot with the butter already on it, melting easily. I guess they are known for their French onion soup, but I don’t like French onion soup so I did not try it. Dinner is served with soup and salad. Comfort station is a single person that could use a strong cleaning with some bleach.

I have passed this place for 2 years and I have heard so much about it that I knew that no place could live up to the hype in my head. Flash forward to yesterday. Time for a steak night. You walk in and you hit immediately with the warm and welcoming look of yesteryears steak house. 60s mirrors, wood paneling, and comfortable darkness. The place is very clean and comfortable. The food was average at best. I was very disappointed when it couldn’t come close to the hype. The filet was dry inside and soak with juice for a disappointing juxtaposition. However the soup/salad accompaniment was great. But this was insulted by outrageously watered down diet coke/something. I am glad I went but would hard pressed to find a reason to return.
