Mensch Mill & Lumber Corporation

(my address says cleveland… this pertains to my nyc secondary home) I really hate dealing with the big box stores, because there is really something about knowledge, assistance, and service that counts — not to mention supporting the local community. I have been there a couple times and staff are always helpful, but also busy. you cant take that personally. This time i received a delivery of baseboard molding different from what I thought had been ordered. It turned out to be an honest misunderstanding of the terminology I used and what sales staff used on the phone (Sometimes in person is better) …no real fault but I can imagine another outfit pinning it on me. Staff could not have been nicer about remedying the situation, getting out the catalog so agreement was clear, getting my fastest replacement including picking up the wrong stuff. Turns out what I wanted actually cost a little more, which I was happy to pay, but they insisted on making it an even swap. I am sure it helped that neither of us portrayed the issue as adversarial… both of us wanted it fairly resolved. They have me as a customer for life and deserve the name Mensch.

These guys have everything under the sun that you would need in terms of lumber and carpentry materials, as well as a good selection of hand tools and power tools. Some of the salesmen are borderline retards and can’t seem to be able to put an estimate together, but then again there are a couple who are fantastic. I don’t buy plumbing or electrical material from them because that stuff is knock-​off — they’re a great lumber company and they should have stuck to lumber.
