Sorry to hear this placed closed but what can be said — shrimps in the rice noodle dish for example were unfortunately not deveined and among other dishes not made or prepared with care.

Great dim sum — better than most I’ve had in Chinatown proper, but not better than I’ve had in Brooklyn… so we’ll call it a compromise. Solid dishes, some better than others. Unfortunately they don’t come out with the old favourites often enough, instead keep pushing out new dishes that aren’t dim sum classic! Whenever someone asks me to take them someplace and I don’t want to go as far as Brooklyn for dim sum, I usually take them here.

This place is very nice in décor, and friendly in service but the food is not so great and much more expensive then other dim sum places in the area. But you get free parking with a validated ticket. I guess that counts for something.

They have a table that has my name on it. To cure my home-sickness, I go here. Period. When I am there, everything feels so right, like I was a little kid again when Mom took me to Yum Cha. I miss you Mom! Says it all, doesn’t it?

Very delicious food! The food is a bit more pricey but totally worth it, especially if you go for dinner. I think after sampling like a few plates and 2 bowls of fried rice, I was already bloated. One of the dishes, which I don’t remember what it’s called but has bak choi and mushroom(vegetarian dish), was delicious! Totally recommend this clean place, despite the very teeny-tiny bathrooms and the super-power hand dryer.

Now called New East Cuisine, I came in for another try, because on weekdays, dim sum of S, M, L sizes are all(ALL!) only $ 1.50. The dumplings were generously sized and pretty good. The rice rolls were on the sticky side, whereas they should be slippery. Food is pretty OK, but they still deserve no more than two stars because: They’ve taken down the little sign on each table that warns you about the inclusion of tip in the bill. I hate you!

My parents invited me to a banquet they were attending here for an association that they are a part of. We were served banquet style — a steady stream of courses, a great variety of dishes.(Too much food really!) I can’t speak on pricing since I didn’t pay but I got a good sampling of the offerings here and it was pretty good. Cold Appetizers: This included jelly fish, bamboo shoots, cold crab, bitter melon. Jelly fish is my fave and it was yummy here! Delicate and crunchy — just the way I like it. Bitter melon isn’t my cup of tea, particularly when it’s super cold and crispy but my parents and their friends thought it was amazing. Soup: Traditional winter melon soup with red vinegar. Good taste with the vinegar but super high on the corn starch as a thickener. Shrimp with Fruit in Mayo(no idea how to say this in English): It was pretty good, very light on the mayo(just how I like it!) but I wish it had walnuts in it. Just the right amount of batter on the shrimp. With the walnuts it would have been perfect. Duck: The head was on it which immediately brings my appetite scale from a 8 to a 0. Didn’t try it. Looked succulent and crispy. I think the duck winked at me. Whole cod fish in ginger and scallion: AMAZING and tender. Great tasting fish, extremely delicate and cooked to perfection. Fried Rice: Who needs it? It was good tho — and quite evidently cooked with a LOT of fat since the rice was a weird yellow twinge like that of Hainanse Chicken Rice from the chicken fat. Yummm, chicken fat rice. Noodles in peanut sauce: Why would I eat this when I can eat lobster? Lobster: AWESOME. Chinese lobster is always tricky because it’s coated in oil and other sorts of sauces that make it even messier to eat than normal. Don’t be shy… dig in! This was good!!! Overall I liked it and will return to try dim sum.

Chinese Cuisine. Unfortunately I can’t give mixed reviews based on the time of day. Dimsum should really get a 3 star review now, and dinner can have a 4 star review. My updated review is mainly on the dinner. So after re-opening themselves. They have a new dinner menu which offers prices slashed down from 40−50% off regular prices. That is a great positive for those who want a great meal at a decent price. Dishes that normally cost $ 8 like Peking Pork Chop, now costs $ 4.40! They are trying to attract more diners with their more affordable pricing. However, what is the negative? If you can’t read a lick of Chinese, then you are SOL(Shiet Outta Luck) because you can’t order off the special menu. Yes, it sucks. Always bring a friend with you that can read Chinese. Will pointing and asking the waiters work? I don’t know if it does, but you can always try. What should you try? The aforementioned Peking Pork Chop, Steak with Bamboo shoot, Salt and Pepper Squid, Salt and Pepper Fish Filet, Sweet and Sour Fish Filet. There are a few other good standout dishes, but the ones I mentioned are some of the ones I like. Oh, one tidbit, you can get two lobsters for $ 20! So pig out! I did have dimsum recently at the now known as ‘New East Cuisine’ and it has downgraded a bit from when I had it when it was called ‘Gala Manor’. All the Chinese people know that this is still Gala Manor in disguise, just called New East now.

After figuring out how to get in(take the elevator inside the shopping mall on the corner) I had a great time. The dim sum was good, the room was spectacular — a giant yellow ballroom still bustling even though we got there just in time to try a few things(I think they stopped making the rounds about 4 p.m.) We couldn’t eat another bite and left some of our more adventurous choices on the table. Still, the bill was about $ 20. Well worth it! Afterward, go to «Candy Shop USA» on Main and 38th.

I never knew about this place until my friend made me cognizant of it. We waited about 15min for a table of 11. We cut the line, as they usually allow you to when you give them more business with a larger party. Upon my first bite of the DimSum, I knew that they didn’t mess around here. My family usually goes to East Manor so this was a nice change of pace. I will definitely be back whenever I stop in the Flushing area on weekends! DISHES –Jellyfish w/radish — perfectly crunchy, generous portion –Egg custard tarts — good, but not as good as Egg Custard King’s –Short rib — very good –Short rib w/black bean sauce — just OK –Beef rice noodle — 2nd best, next to Mei Lai Wah Bakery’s –Chicken feet(red) — steamed longer than the natural color dish, it was OK –Chicken feet(natural color) — if you like cartilage, this dish is for you, yum –Durian puff pastry — not as much durian filling as the one @ Golden Unicorn, but the puff pastry was excellent! –Fried Smelt — airy fresh crunch, but way too little fish and way too much batter –Beef Chow Fun — great job here, chewy consistency and not too stickky –Chow Mein w/pork — the chow mein was good, but the pork was shredded and corn starched to death. peking duck

I was actually taken aback when I first stepped foot in here. Usually whenever you walk into a Chinese restaurant, you are usually infiltrated by the color red, pink, or white tablecloths. Instead, Gala Manor welcomed me with a warm yellow hue on their podiums and tablecloths. It was actually a nice change of pace to see a different color. In fact, I feel like it made my dining experience even better. It made me feel comfortable with the yellow(gold). This is strictly for their dim sum. For a Monday, they were extremely busy. Maybe it’s because their dim sum dishes are half off. Maybe it’s the week of Thanksgiving and everyone has taken vacation time off. But either way, this place was bustling. But in no way were the tastefulness of the dishes diminished by any means. Quality was excellent of all the dishes we had. Tea was refilled many times in a timely manner. They also offer a parking lot across the street for free, just be sure to validate your ticket. Your cost $ 2 for gratuity. That’s it! Where else are you going to find parking for $ 2 in NY?! Especially if you’re going to be having dim sum for hours! We had food for 5 plus a ton of stuff to take home(which included 7 or 8 dishes — ordered separately just to take home), cost $ 78 which included tax and tip.

If you want better, cheaper, more authentic Chinese Dimsum, Tung Yi Fung Across the street are where all the locals are at. Gala Manor is overpriced and in general of poor quality. They cater to a different crowd I assume but if one day you don’t feel like waiting on line perhaps you can cross the street and find something better at Tung Yi Fung.

I may be biased towards Gala Manor since it was my first true dim sum experience. But after a handful of trips back to Flushing for dim sum at other places, I’m still partial to Gala Manor because of their Shanghai style soup dumplings — something you cannot find at Cantonese style dim sum restaurants. These delicate little doughy pouches full of hot soup must be carefully slurped or popped right into your mouth lest you lose the soup all over the table. Gala Manor has a wide array of meat and veggie dumplings, delicious little crispy fried fish that you eat like french fries, fried chicken feet(can’t recommend those though), steamed greens, shrimps, delicious pork buns, gelatinous desserts and plenty of hard to identify treats that you just have to taste and discover. Which is part of the fun of eating dim sum. Bring a lot of friends so you can try a little of everything that rolls past your table. It won’t likely cost you more than $ 15.

For those familiar with the DC community, Tyler Cowen is one of our local experts on ethnic cuisine. He said this place was the best. So I knew I had to try it. The entrance is hard to find if you don’t know where you’re going. The address itself points to a pretty empty mall but the real entrance is on Prince Street, along with the parking lot that accompanies the restaurant. The people here speak very little English if any. If English is the only language you speak, you will be playing a lot of charades. The siu mai was pretty good as well as the shrimp in rice noodle. Neither were the best I’ve ever had but still were acceptable. The pork in bean curd skin was tasty. They also had soup dumplings which were pretty good but my gf thought that the ones at Joe’s Shanghai are better. I think that these aren’t as tangy. The tofu in syrup was also pretty good. This place was packed on a Saturday at noon with lots of people waiting for tables. Like any dim sum place, we had to share the table with several other people. The waitstaff didn’t appear to speak any English so there was a lot of pointing going on. They were pretty attentive with refilling tea and taking away plates. The prices were a little on the pricey side for dimsum as we ended up spending 26 dollars for two people. Would I return? Yeah probably, but I still have a few more places in Flushing to try.

Holy macaroni. Six of us. After ordering dish after dish after dish after dish, the total still came up to about only $ 9 per person. Words fail me.

One of my favorite parts of this Gala Manor, especially when bringing guests, is the option of entering through the almost empty mall, going up in the elevator, and having the elevator open up to the restaurant. I usually arrive after the dim sum rush, around 1 and have never had to wait. The dim sum here is great, if you know what do order. There is one dumpling that seems to be stuffed with frozen corn and peas, so avoid that one. The leek dumplings, shu mai, har gaw, shrimp wrapper things, congee, fried calamari, are delicious. They once served seashell stuffed with an egg seafood mix– different and amazing. Occasionally the dishes won’t be hot enough(like the fried calamari w sesame(which happens to be one of my favorite dim sum dishes/favorite preparation of calamari[or is it octopus?])) — sometimes you can ask to get a fresh plate of it… if anyone can understand you. Also they do actually have several private parking lots– just look for the signs. This is extremely convenient when driving into Flushing.

After years of moaning and griping about how NYC has no good dim sum(as compared to LA and SF), I’ve been proven wrong. One need only travel to the far depths of Greater NYC to find it. We came pretty late, around 2PM, on a Sunday, but fresh, yummy food was still being dished out. There was no wait. Everything was hot, tasty, and delicious. I’m assuming we would have had more choices had we gone earlier, but I’m still happy with the selection. The bill came to 36 $ for three people. I was put off by the fact that they didn’t offer to give us change for a 40 $, especially since a 15% service charge was already included in our tab. For this reason alone, I’d try another place before going back here again. Like many places in Flushing, cash only.

As one of the mega players in the Dim Sum scene in Flushing, Gala Manor impresses most new comers with its spacious interior, classy lobby, and eye catching entrance. What brings most folks here from 10AM till 2PM, however, is their food which for Dim Sum, is a notch below nearby Gum Fung, Tung Yi Fung, and especially Ocean Jewel. Its a shame really, as the service is good and the place looks nice. A majority of the customers here are usually Chinese, which is either testament to its authenticity of the food or a sign that Flushing is just that Chinese, or simply both. The combination pork dumplings(ham sui gok) were crispy, the egg tarts and char siu so were fresh and delicious. The shrimp crêpe was subpar and their specialty dishes were expensive and subpar. I imagine though that their best hours are in the morning, but the dishes are usually still solid even after 1PM.

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Flushing, NY and is where I take the family for weekend brunch. On a weekend, it’s good to arrive around 10:00am. There are several smaller restaurants nearby and customers may overflow into Gala Manor. I do not have patience to wait to be seated, this is perfect. The restaurant is big and can accomodate a lot of people. Great for a huge banquet. It is located near the # 7 train at Main Street station. The dim sum is great and reasonably priced. It’s typical dim sum that you would find at another chinese restaurant, but the quality is the main reason I go to Gala Manor. I would give Gala Manor four stars for quality and price. However, in the recent months, they recently tacked on a 15% service charge and NYC tax to the final check. I can understand a mandatory 15% service charge if your party is at least 8 or more people. This drops my overall rating to 3 stars to 3.5 stars. In this case, I will round down to 3 stars.

Real dim sum. I tell my friends that I’m going to Flushing or I went to Flushing and they say«why?» Well, because swanky manhattan dim sum is not real dim sum. Gala has great quality, very reasonably priced, authentic dim sum. It’s better to go with someone who can speak Mandarin or maybe Cantonese, and knows the good dishes, and the dishes that they don’t push around on the carts. Also, don’t make the mistake of taking the 7 local instead of express. Whoops.
