Down the rabbit hole. I felt like I went down the rabbit hole when I walked into this shop. I can’t resist bookstores of any kind and it’s those shops stuffed with books in every nook and cranny that have me believing in wonderland. Florence Book Exchange is the ideal little shop for getting a second-hand book at a reduced price. It’s not quite as much as half the cover price, but it’s still significantly less than any first-hand bookstore. Every corner, every shelf nearly to ceiling, is filled with books. Although the books are sorted by genre, I still had to ask for directions to the sci-fi titles(my go-to section). It was in one of the middle sections and overflowed from one wall to several shelves across the aisle. I was impressed. Within each group there’s a good selection of titles and not many duplicates among them, at least in the sections in which I spent any time. This is most definitely a bookstore that encourages you to take your time. I came across a chair in one of the small aisles, but as welcome as that normally would be, I think a ladder would have been a better idea. It would have made it easier to see everything on the top shelves. Some books had green price stickers, which I later learned represents the cash price for trade-ins on titles that are one-of-a-kind. Like most second hand bookstores, Florence Book Exchange does take trade-ins and with store credit issued for a percentage off the cover price, you can use half that amount, together with cash, to get more books. I’m sure it isn’t quite as confusing as it sounds and if I lived closer, would probably have it figured out in the second visit. My biggest issue was with having to leave so many books behind.
