I can’t believe I’m updating this review, but here I am doing just that. Wow, some things have definitely changed here– and for the better! Despite hesitations and prior experiences with La Azteca Taco House, I decided to give this little neighborhood dive another shot recently and I was blown away by the positive changes. They’ve pretty much done a 180 since I was there the last time. To begin with, the food is really good– homemade recipes made with fresh ingredients and generous toppings. The food is spicy, more like authentic Mexican food. Right now, I’d say it’s probably one of the closest to authentic Mexican cuisine that I’ve ever had and I’ve been to Mexico before! I was completely shocked– this was not the old La Azteca that I not so fondly remembered. This was the new and improved La Azteca. The cheese quesadillas are good, not soggy or swathed in grease. No, they are delicious, made with zesty cheeses and not at all like those oily things that I remembered from before. They don’t have traditional nachos on the menu these days, but they do have a terrific taco salad that is similar to loaded nachos. It’s so good, probably the best taco salad that I’ve ever had in Michigan. All of the vegetables were fresh and it was loaded with sour cream and the hottest hot sauce(both served on the side, of course) you can find anywhere. They seem to have pared down the menu selections a bit and that’s probably a good thing. I think they are able to focus on special dishes a little better now instead of trying to do a lot of things and not well. They still don’t have a soda fountain dispenser, but they do have bottled drinks(Coca Cola products), which is just fine with me, and they use reverse osmosis filtration systems for the water, so it’s safe to drink. They’ve never had a liquor license that I know of, but that’s not a problem, especially if you are doing takeout. As far as the ambiance goes, it’s still a dive, but it’s very clean and while they still have a small dining room, it seems like carryout is the ticket these days. While the service was always on the rude side before, the people behind the counter and the waitresses seemed pretty friendly this time. While the line to pick up food was long, the wait was not too bad considering how many people were lined up to grab takeout. Everyone was pleasant and cheery, making conversation with the neighborhood locals. Prices are still the best in town. I think we paid under $ 20 for the two of us, which is really hard to do in today’s economy. Heck, Burger King costs about that for two people now! I’m glad I gave La Azteca another chance!

The twelve taco deal is fantastic when you are looking to smash some good, greasy tacos. The salsa that they make here has a medium kick and is very tasty, making a great companion to your chow box. Every time I’ve come here I’ve only ever ordered the tacos with medium shells so I can’t speak for the rest of the menu, but it’s well worth the stop if you are driving by. Intersection that it’s placed at has been the only downside.

Tried this place out on a whim. People kept saying«it looks like butt, but the food is tasty». They were pretty much correct. The fish tacos are scrummy, love those; the corn tortillas were a bit mealy but the flavor was great, especially the baja sauce or whatever. Also I got a huge taco salad for $ 5.75+tax I believe it was. Sides of small guacamole and pico de gallo were $ 2 and $ 1.50 respectively. I know that the price of avocados has gone up up, but I still feel a bit cheated. At any rate, it’s fairly authentic, and pretty good for the Flint area. So give it a shot if you’re craving Mexican food. A word of caution however: if the shabby state of the exterior puts you off, it’s about twice as sketchy on the inside. So prepare yourself for that, and you’ll be good to go. Bön appetit!

This Mexican restaurant is not much to look at. Inside is very basic style diner with a couple of tables and several booths against the wall. A friend and I went for dinner on a Sunday. There were very few options of places open near downtown Flint on a Sunday evening. As it turned out La Azteca was not busy just because they were open, but because they have some seriously good Mexican food. The prices per meal are also inexpensive, especially considering the amount of food that comes with an order. We started with chips and an order of the guacamole and a couple of Mexican sodas(lime and pineapple). The chips were warm, which was nice, but were really just a means of getting the guac to your mouth. Theirs came studded with the right amount of fresh tomatoes and onion. Awesome. It was mild but they provided a hot sauce so that you could add spice to your own choosing. I’m a big avocado fan and I loved their guac. My friend and I each ordered the beef flour meal which came with a taco, burrito and enchilada along with rice and beans. The rice and beans were alright, the plate also had lettuce and tomato with some type of sweeter red sauce(I’m not sure what it was exactly but it was good), which liven it up a bit. The main entrees were great. The tacos in particular were a high light. Their flour shells were fried in a way that caused them to puff and become the perfect amount of crunchy. I’m not a fan of the hard, chewy shells, these were anything but. The burrito had a beef and potato stew inside and the tortilla had a light crisp to it, as if it had been quickly and lightly fried. Each item had a good amount of meat and flavoring, something that often seems to be lacking at Tex-Mex places. La Aztea did not need to cover up everything in a pile of melted cheese and sauce. I would definitely return if I end up back in the downtown Flint area.

I love their food but the terrible neighborhood and even worse customer service make it so that I won’t even go there anymore. I paid for an extra salsa recently and they forgot to give it to us. I called them and told them and they said I could pick it up the next day, well unfortunately(or fortunately depending on how you think about it) I don’t go to that side of town very often so it was about 2 weeks before I went again and when I placed my order by phone I informed them that they owed me a salsa. The woman I spoke with made it seem like getting us that salsa wouldn’t be a problem, however, when my fiancé went to pick up the order it apparently was a big problem that La Azteca was not willing to over look. They would not give us an extra salsa! Honestly, I was pissed. I couldn’t believe they made such a big deal about some salsa when both times I had placed over $ 20 orders. The man I talked to was rude and made me feel like I was not a valued patron. Because of this I won’t go back.

So delicious! It a hole-in-the-wall, kinda looks a little unclean inside, but the food is to die for. I usually only get take-out. Be sure to tell them when you will arrive to pick up your order, or they may not start cooking it until you get there. The girls working the front counter are pleasant and efficient. My recommendations are the chicken tacos and fish tacos. Use the spicy salsa sparingly! Any beef dish is very greasy, yummy greasy. Price is quite reasonable, inexpensive. It’s worth it to eat here when visiting Flint.

I’ve always loved this place. I moved from Michigan 5 years ago. Every time I come home to visit eat here is a must. I’ve never been disappointed. It’s rivaled only buy 1 other places that of which I won’t mention. The tacos are magnificent. I’m a medium she’ll guy. The only thing that bothered me today is that it seemed as if I should speak to them to get attention. failed me lol

TACOSALAD!!! Really inexpensive taco salad, plenty of grease, totally basic — meat, cheese, lettuce, tomato, tortilla chips, and GREASE. all of the delicious grease. I don’t care. Their house made salsa completes this meal which should only be considered a way to give you digestive system some likely needed exercise. Whenever I’m in Michigan, this is on my list of places to go to. Some things are just comforting, and this is high up there. The sode fountain has never worked here, but when I was here in May, it was up and running! Hallelujah!

An average Mexican restaurant. I wouldn’t give them a 5-star but 2 – 3 stars. Their service is excellent. I come from Texas and incomparable with restaurants down in Texas.

After years of saying we should try this place, my wife and I finally did last week. We both got the chicken fajitas with corn tortillas. The chicken came out on a skillet, which is always the best way to go, with the usual green pepper, red pepper, onion combo and it had just the right amount of black pepper on it. It came out with some beans, rice, cheese, lettuce(which oddly enough had French on it, but I went with it and put it on my fajitas anyway and it added a nice tang, actually. Maybe it was supposed to be salad, but whatever, it’s my food, if I say it’s topping, it’s topping), guac, and sour cream. Service was really good too. We never ran out of anything(soda, water, chips, salsa, etc.), and they were churning out take-out orders like there was some sort of run on the taco bank.

Everytime I dine here it’s always busy. Why? Because the food is really good. Also, the service is great. Whatever is in the gravy for their stewed beef it keeps me coming back for more. Great prices, great service and great food make this place a winner!

I love Mexican food, this place is a travesty. Just because your parents have taken you here for years does not a good taco make. Upon my arrival I was excited about the broke down Mortal Kombat cabinet in the entrance way, but thats is precisely where I left my excitement. No complaints about the service. The walls are sparse save for some sombreros and table numbers, dimly lit. It didn’t strike me as dirty but it wasn’t the most sterile looking place I’ve eaten at. I’m just going to jump right into this now. No Mexican place should ever, ever charge for chips and salsa. They should be on the table before I even order a drink. Side of guacamole is $ 2 which is reasonable. Cost to have a spread of guacamole on your burrito that is not equal to the size of the side is also $ 2. Figure that one out. The meat here is bland, bland, bland. No spice and no flavor aside from the grease. The tortilla on my burrito was so sweet and sugary that it completely overpowered everything, even my Sprite and I have had better pico de gallo out of a tiny metal can. This place is acceptable only under dire circumstances. If you want real, authentic Mexican foods, go to Guadalajara Grill on Dort. Their tacos shit all over this place.

Sort of a college type place I think. Cheap, good mexican food. I had the combination dinner special which had a little bit of everything. All of it was pretty amazing. The taco was much better than what I’ve had over at La Familia on 5th street. Despite being a hole in the wall, the place is quite clean and I would disagree with people saying the service is poor. I went in on Friday(~1030p) and the lady taking the order was quite pleasant. They do have mexican sodas available for $ 1 in addition to stuff from the soda pop machine.

This place does not serve good food. They have never had fountain drinks as far as I know — beverage options have always been limited to the pop machine. I have to say these are the most inhospitable Mexican people I have ever met. They are rude. And they don’t serve Guacamole.

La Azteca is quite literally a hole-in-the-wall. My mom started eating there when she started working at Flint Osteopathic Hospital back in the 70s, and then she took me there when I was young taking private music lessons at the Flint Institute of Music. If you can get past the sign that has been blown out since the late 70s and the less-than-attractive exterior, you are in store for some fabulous Mexican food at an amazing price. You may also want to ignore the darkly-lit interior and mediocre service, too… The last time I was there, you got your pop from the can because the fountain pop machine is broken. I realize I’m not painting the most appetizing picture, but the burrito deluxe is to die for. I also really, really enjoy the soft shell beef and cheese taco(my mouth is watering right now). The hot sauce is homemade and very spicy, so use it sparingly. The food is very flavorful and so filling. Two people can easily get a very filling lunch for less than $ 10. Now that I’m a student at Michigan State, I don’t get to eat at La Azteca as much as I’d like, but I always make an effort to stop in when I’m home. Eat there — you won’t be disappointed. I’ve been eating there for like 20 years now. Something has to keep me going back.
