I went to two counseling sessions with my wife, led by Devan. I didn’t learn until later that you should interview your therapist before going to them, because their styles and experience can be dramatically different than what you need. This is what happened with me. After the first session, I felt like Devan was on my wife’s side – not a good thing for couples counseling. At the beginning of the second session, my wife asked for a separation(note: she did not mention the word«divorce.») I began to get upset, and Devan said that I could either leave or we could discuss divorce proceedings and getting attorneys. I left the session thinking my wife had asked for divorce, and that I needed an attorney. Neither were true, but the way things played out in this brief second session contributed to much heartbreak and difficulty. When you’re looking for a couples counselor, I urge you to do your homework and interview the counselor beforehand so you can be sure it’s the best fit. This was not the best fit.
