Varallo Brothers is a hidden gem in South Philly! Due to my husband’s sweet tooth, we just had to find a bakery for some after dinner treats. I was in the mood for espresso and was pleasantly surprised when I found out that Varallos offers a full coffee bar, complete with regular and decaf espresso. They also have gelato and an array of cookies, candy, cakes… you name it, they have it! We settled on a chocolate ricotta cannoli and some lemon cookie bar thing. Both were delicious. The café has a few small tables, so you can sit and sip your coffee while slowly enjoying a delicacy. Bonus — they are open until 9:00pm! Great little spot — I will definitely be back!

This place is cash only, but they are super nice about using their credit card machine. This place is a hidden jem. Their cannolis must be the best in the city along with their gelato. Cute place to get some coffee and pastries, that is for sure!

Best undiscovered treasure in S Philly, take it from a native.

Their cannolis are better than Terminis in my humble opinion. And yes, I am talking about the original cannoli cream not some crazy flavored kind. I have purchased and made cannolis for a lifetime and these are just honestly some kick ass cannolis. Their gelato in the summertime is amazing as well. It is a typical South Philly Bakery putting out superior products as they have for decades. It is a classic and I hope it continues to thrive for years to come.

Did you just leave a funeral mass at St. Nick’s? How about postchurch cannoli? Maybe that’s a little heavy for Unilocal… but it is definitely what my Aunt Anna would’ve wanted. Regardless of the occasion, the traditional cannoli are great(they also have banana crème and some other flavors). The Easter bread is good too, if you’re into that Peter Cottontail stuff.

Distinctly average cookies with below average customer service. Maybe we just caught them on an off day.

This is my favorite bakery in the area. I like the women who run the place. Their cannolis, rum babas, eclairs and cookies are light and delicious. Their birthday cakes are average.

Just average and deserving of three stars for their lackluster varieties. Did not satisfy my cravings for sweets and will never return. My sweet tooth cried for three days after trying their bland pastries. We tried a variety of their cookies and most are bland or stale. I like the cookie with pine nuts. Otherwise Termini while slightly more expensive is my preferred bakery — go try their almond and pecan cookies/cake!

To me this is by far the best bakery in philadelphia. Everything taste absolutely amazing from your traditional italian pastries to just a cup of coffee its all great!!! Also the service from top to bottom is fantastic they make you feel very comfortable and are extremely polite. Your experience there will not be disappointing trust me whether you live in the city or are traveling from somewhere else it will definitely be worth it!!!

I love coming here. It’s in a quiet area of south philly, so it’s usually not packed. It’s a family business, with all the quirks and nice aspects of that. It’s always fun to come in, order a sweet, and sit down with it for a couple of minutes and really savor it. The cannoli is awesome, as one would expect, and other things I’ve had have been equally awesome. I like to try different things each time, but the cannoli is always there if I need it — or if I want to take something home for a late night snack. Definitely put this on your list alongside Termini’s and Federal Donuts if you want a pastry day.

I think Varallo’s just might be my favorite bakery in South Philly. First of all it is very friendly with people working behind the counter who don’t seem to mind that you need time to choose… and maybe some answers to questions. There is also a lot of interest to look at here on the walls and a colorful painting to take in. This business is still in the same family who started it when they immigrated to Philadelphia from near Naples. What I would especially recommend trying here is the layered ricotta aragosta(lobster tail). This Neapolitan concoction is one of the best pastries in all of Philly and in my opinion superior to a Sicilian cannoli as it significantly larger with much more filling. The cherry and ricotta tartina is also special. On your next trip to East Passyunk, walk a few blocks east and discover Varallo’s Bakery. I think you’ll be glad that you did!

They pre-fill their cannoli(WHYYYY?) and their cheesecake is probably the worst that I’ve ever had. It had a gummy/chewy texture, especially at the top. The«crust» was also not particularly crusty or crunchy, but rather soggy. Staff wasn’t especially nice either.

Another«stumbled upon». Out for a walk in East Passyunk deciding where to eat we walked on the back streets and found this bakery. Left with Italian cookies and sticky buns with the most subtly flavored sugar coating. So very nice. Took them to a friends house and all were consumed that day by people in the burbs who miss the good bakeries the city offers.

Great selection of pastries, cookies, even gelato! And the prices are much cheaper than the other Italian bakeries in town. There are a few tables where you can sit down and enjoy coffee with your pastry(or pastries in my case). The employees here are very friendly. It is cash only but they do have an ATM on the premises.

Wow! A bountiful selection of cannolis, gelato and friendly service. They also have Italian cookie and pastries, but I was impressed with how they carefully wrapped my goodies and you can buy one cookie or 100. Every sale is valuable. Plus there are tables outside to enjoy your coffee and listen to the sounds of South Philly. They only take cash.

Cheesecake is sooo light. Bring half of this cake in a giant Tupperware to the party; you’ll soon discover who is in your inner(half) circle.

One of the best S. Philly bakeries! Excellent cannolis; amazing fig-chocolate bars! One of the few Italian bakeries that sells bread(which is great) as well as pastries. So many choices too. Patient, friendly staff will guide you in the right direction. If it wasn’t for Fountain Porter down the block I may never have discovered this gem.
