Every now and then I get an itch to get back down to my old neighbor and make a point to stop in at Towne. It’s not the place it used to be back in the 70s but something is keeping it in business. Smallish old school pizza pies. I go mainly for sentimental reasons. We walk up from Catherine street or stop in on the way home from the movies and stuff as a teen. I mean they are not bad, just kinda stuck in time and if your not from that time you won’t appreciate the place. I believe the same family owns it.

Their combination stromboli is a great deal. The guys are friendly, too. Don’t expect this to be gourmet, but it definitely hits the spot and keeps me happy.

I’m giving it 4 stars based on how it fits my needs for what it is. It’s very close to me and a great place to dart out to for takeout when I don’t feel like either going out or cooking in. It’s not fancy, but the food is good, inexpensive, quickly prepared, and the staff are friendly and courteous. They have a wide selection. The pizza works for me, with both the regular and thin crust being good. I also like a basic sub — chicken parm and fries is another favorite. It’s my «go to» spot for those lazy evenings…

Good selection of food — I like their hoagies. I’m not a fan of their grilled chicken they use on their salads(don’t like the seasonings it is coated in), but their other salads are good. Most importantly, they have a great beer and cider selection for a little pizza shop. It’s worth stopping in just for that.

The food is greasy and barely warm. Check the four and six packs, sometimes a cheaper beer is slipped in. It is dirty too.

Quick and convenient. Get the boli. Or stop in to pick up some beers.

Totally decent. This isn’t NY style thin crust, and will be much more familiar as /almost/Greek style pizza to my fellow New Englanders(no «Houses of Pizza» here!) Cheap, tasty sauce, and fresh ingredients = yay! The staff is friendly and food’s ready quickly. The nice selection of interesting six-pack options doesn’t hurt either.

I see a lot of people knocking the pizza here, but I love it. Its not the thin, crispy style that seems to be gaining in popularity, but rather a thicker, doughy pie that is really delicious. I get the plain or the Greek several times a month. I order delivery sometimes, but stop in when I want to grab some beer. They have awesome prices on their 6-packs and they have an especially great selection of IPAs. For pizza and beer close to my apartment, I couldn’t be happier.

I ordered pizza from here late on a Friday night since it was the only thing open. The pizza came pretty quickly, but I was just not a fan of the it. The pizza was really doughy and puffy with a big thick crust. There also wasn’t enough sauce on the pizza either. I probably won’t be ordering from here again. I’ll just leave a frozen pizza in my freezer for desperate, hungry, drunken moments.

It’s sad to see how far this place has fallen. What was once a stalwart of the neighborhood, and a winner of Best oh Philly for it’s hoagies(late ‘70s, early ‘80s) is now little more than a convenient place to pick up a 6-pack. The pizza is a greasy, floppy mess, and the hoagies and cheesesteaks are distant shadows of what they once were at Towne. On the plus side, there’s a decently large seating area in the back that’s rarely populated with any patrons. The staff is friendly, and they have a good selection of beer, including good local brews(Victory, PBC, Dogfish Head) and interesting imports(Japan, Spain, Canada, Germany). In the final analysis, it’s hard to root for a place that could be so much better than it is.

I just had to try this place and I have on many occasions now because an ex-colleague of mine back in SF remembered this place to be happenin’ back in 1976! She even printed out a menu for me before I moved out to Philly. Anyway, I’ve been there several times only to pick up some late minute pizza and beer. Although the pizza is mediocre and the place does close pretty early(10pm), it’s nice they have a good selection of beer to buy/take home. This place is only an option if you live near by, and don’t think about actually eating here — just order to go!

Got a cheesesteak from here once, it was decent. Was a little concerned that while I was waiting for my order a girl came in with a pizza and asked for it to be cooked more!

This pizza is terrible. Not quite bad enough that you cannot physically stomach it, but so bad that you will wish you couldn’t shortly thereafter. Three of us ordered pizza, no one was able to eat more than a slice. My greatest desire was to throw the rest of the pizza out the window just to get it out of my presence, but I settled for putting it in the garbage. Yes, the beer selection is okay, but do not ever make the mistake of feeling guilty about never ordering food and giving this place a try. It will be a one time mistake.

I’m gonna go ahead and say that this pizza deserves like negatives stars, but they sell 40s here! 40s! It’s like a real sleazeball establishment! Shitty pizza + beer = at least deserving of 3 star town! O yeah, also because it’s open late.

Like someone else mentioned, if you live in the neighborhood and it’s late and you need food, it will be enough for the moment. The pizza is not that good and very, very greasy and sometimes undercooked. I haven’t gotten anything here in a long time besides walking on the way home realizing I was really thirsty and knowing there wasn’t anything at home to drink. I needed a quick refreshment, so I got a can of Dr. Pepper for 75 cents. That’s the only time I was really happy that was there. Otherwise, I wouldn’t really recommend it to take friends to or take out when you are craving good food. It’s a good midnight snack, but that’s it.

The silent«e» is for eek. I’m moderately interested in friendly neighbors, but I basically want to draw the line at friendly greetings and boring questions. Once upon a time I moved a few doors away from ye olde Towne Pizza; shortly thereafter, a nice man working there gave me a crusty old microwave. Pizza anytime, reheated at my leisure? And I’m only giving this place 2 stars? Tell you what, kids — don’t take microwaves from strangers, especially if they’re strangers who know your address. They’ll demand hugs on the corner and they might just knock on your window to say hello late at night. I’m sure I’d like this place just fine without the extra side of creep-out(no extra charge). The pizza is okay, better than Domino’s but not quite the star quality of a Papa John’s or a Little Caesar’s. There’s a special pie called Swimming Greens — go ahead, try to order it without retching.

Solid local pizza joint. Doesn’t look very clean inside, but the people who work there are friendly(one guy will talk your ear off about basketball) and the pizza is at the very least consistent — slightly undercooked, cheesy and greasy. If that’s how you like it, I recommend it. If you’re into chain pizza or really thin pizza, I suggest you try another joint. Finally, it is priced nice and they have beer, which is nice.
