I decided to give this place a try after I saw all the good reviews in Unilocal.I must say that my personal experience there met the expectations. The front desk person was extremely pleasant from the time I walked in all the way through checking out. My her stylist, Melissa — was very detailed oriented and she did a great job assessing the best ways for me to style my hair. Overall a very good place to get a hair cut. The décor is funky and welcoming — I will be returning for sure.

Mockingbird salon is amazing! Amber is by far one of the best colorist/​stylist I’ve ever had work on my hair!!! (And I’ve had plenty) she’s FANTASTIC give her a try, you’ll be thrilled you did!!! Spend the extra for the olaplex treatment especially if your bottle blonde and Amber uses the product to its fullest potential! Thanks again Amber

I visited Mockingbird Salon for the first time recently and I could not be more pleased and shocked about the service I received. I’ve been getting my processed for about 10 years now and this is the first time I’ve ever been impressed with how my hair turned out.
I went in with a dark ombré and knew that it would require some serious skills to remove the red undertone and dark color from my hair to take me to a bright blonde. Mo went above and beyond with completing a double process to my hair and it turned out so perfectly! I expected a copper tint to my hair from how dark my hair was but she lifted my hair and toned it like there was no tomorrow. I am so impressed with the results and will definitely be going back!!! This is my new favorite spot for haircuts. Everyone is really friendly, and the service is outstanding. I’ve had several cuts from Jenna and Nicole, and I always look great when I leave.

Can there be an exception where I do more than 5 stars? Honestly, I couldn’t have had a better experience. This was my first time at this salon and after I was convinced I would never switch salons, sadly the one I was going to for a while was getting a bit too stuffy for my taste and I was starting to feel increasingly uncomfortable. I don’t live anywhere close to this salon, it’s a hike, so I figured it would take me a while to get there since this salon is in South Philly. I ended up being a half hour early, meaning 10:30 and the salon opens at 11 at least today (Friday). The receptionist was so warm and kind and didn’t make me feel weird for being so early. In walks my hair-​whispering stylist, Amber. She was absolutely incredible. I didn’t have a picture to show her, but basically all I wanted was to take the dark bottom layer of my hair and bring that to the same level blonde all over and to make the parts that were left very dark brown even without touching my dark roots, in otherwords, ombré. I then told Amber how I was concerned about the damage and she worked her magic by adding in a super miracle treatment into the color. She absolutely killed it. I feel confident, I feel pretty, and even though my hair needs a little TLC and a gentle touch when styling at the moment, the treatment she added in worked wonders on my fine hair. The entire time I felt so comfortable with her and there was no awkwardness in sparking conversation and there was no awkwardness when I just sat there silently watching her work her magic. Most of all, there was no pressure for other services other than being asked just because there was enough time until her next appointment if I wanted to.
Seriously, go here. Go to Amber! And if she’s not available I watched two girls leave Jenna’s chair with fantastic cuts and listened to her interact with her clients and work with everything they’re saying.

Jenna is amazing. I’ve spent years trying to find someone who can add some NATURAL-​looking lighter/​blonde tones to my red hair. Jenna did it on the first try (and continues to do so). She also takes the time to teach me styling tips after she has done my color. She is fantastic. I would recommend her to anyone.

I recently had my hair cut colored/​highlighted with Amber and I LOVED everything she did! Not only was she patient and really listened to what I wanted but she’s super sweet and talented. Collette the front-​of-​the house manager is attentive and the entire experience was beyond my expectations. I am a fellow business owner on East Passyunk Avenue and own Beautiful Brides Philly and I will be recommending my cut and color clients to them in the future!

I recently had my first cut at Mockingbird. I was really excited because of all the amazing reviews, but I left very disappointed. My cut looks decent, but it is not AT ALL what I asked for. After having a lengthy conversation with the stylist about how I was growing my hair out and that I was excited to finally be able to pull it all up (it was to my collarbone), I was confident that she was just going to trim it and shape it up. When I looked in the mirror, she had cut it to chin length. Now I am set back to where I was months ago in terms of growing it out, and I won’t be able to pull it back for a while. There is no fixing the cut because I just have to wait for it to grow now, which is so frustrating. I couldn’t believe how the stylist disregarded everything I said and did not listen to what I wanted. Because of that I will not return.

Jenna cut my hair today, and I absolutely love it! It was my first time trying the salon, because for some reason the place I had been going to wasn’t returning my calls, and I needed a cut. I chose this place based on all the 5-​star reviews, and when I called and asked for a stylist experienced with bobs, they recommended Jenna (or Mo). Jenna is an artist. I could tell by the way she scissored and styled my hair. I explained what I wanted — a bob with some style that would grow out nicely. She listened, allowed me to show her pictures of lightly layered bobs I liked, and made some suggestions of her own. I told her I have important job interviews coming up, so I need a good cut. The end result is a very sophisticated bob! I wanted a clean-​looking bob, but didn’t want it to look boring. So she gave me some light layers to give nice texture throughout without thinning my hair, which wouldn’t have been attractive on my Asian hair. And that’s another thing — she has experience with Asian hair! Asian hair can be flat, so what she did gave my hair texture and style. I don’t normally like products on my hair but she used some really nice, pleasant smelling sprays in my hair — again to add texture — that I loved! My fiancé loves the cut and the smell too! So I’ll be back!

Love this place! Great customer service from the receptionist. She always works with my last minute requests and gets me in at a good time. I’ve had haircuts from several people here and it always looks awesome.

This salon came recommended by a South Philly friend. As a recent transplant to Philly, I was extremely nervous about finding a new salon. Let’s be honest, you really have to trust them!
I was immediately welcomed with a smile and asked if I wanted something to drink. I met with my stylist, Leslie, who spent a great deal of time asking about the hair cut that I wanted, my daily hair regimen, hair tendencies, etc. She made such great conversation and was very friendly.
I am so impressed with the level of friendliness and care this salon has for its guests and how affordable it is. You won’t be disappointed! Oh, and I LOVE my new haircut… Hands down the best cut I have ever had. Can’t wait to go back!!!

I actually created my Unilocal account so that I can say how much I love the haircut that Leslie gave me. She gave me one of the best cuts I have ever received without taking too much from my length. I forgot to leave a review when I first went here but I think that’s a good thing. It shows that my review is well thought and not spurious. I had bad hair experiences in the past and lived in California and Europe for the previous decade. The Unilocal reviews made me confident with choosing this salon. I’m glad I did.
I chose Mo because of her good reviews. I’m also glad I did that.
It is a charming salon. Everyone was exceptionally friendly. Mo discussed what I wanted before doing anything and got to know me a bit — which I find very important from a hair stylist. I get very tired of the assumptions that because I have long hair as a male that I am into heavy metal, surf, or whatever stereotype is applied. (I’m an academic political theorist that listens mostly to EDM.)
The price was also exceptional. I’m used to paying 5 to 10 times more for a decent salon cut.
My only complaint was that it was such a painless experience it seemed to go by too quickly. Otherwise, I have nothing bad to say about my experience here.

Leslie is fantastic! I got an ombré and cut and it looks amazing. I’ve had people stop mid sentence to tell me how great my hair is looks. Reasonable prices, such friendly staff, it will quickly become your go-​to salon.

I went to Mockingbird as my first «big girl» salon trip. Being previously used to getting cuts at places such as the Hair Cuttery and Great Clips, I had never been to a salon like this. However, months and months of mistreating my hair (was blow drying, straightening, washing it every day and dying it lighter on a regular basis) did some serious damage. I was unable to grow out my hair because the breakage was so bad. I knew it was time for a change.
Nichol not only did a wonderful job on my cut, she also gave great advice on how to actually take care of my hair so that I could grow it out. She was able to dye my hair back to my natural color so that I don’t have to dye it in the future and can let the damage heal.
It’s only been a month and my hair is so much better! The color is staying and the cut is growing out beautifully! Thank you Nichol!

One of the first things I did when I moved to Philadelphia was start looking for a new hairstylist, and I found everything I wanted and more in Mo Hayes at Mockingbird. Besides being a generally awesome woman with an amazing style of her own, she’s a damn good stylist. I’ve seen her twice now and I’m seeing her again this week, and I can’t wait! I came to her when i was growing out a pixie and now I’m in a blunt bob with bangs. She made the transition much less painful.
fyi I’d been to American Mortals before, and the holier-​than-​thou too cool attitude of the people there is just annoying and unattractive to me. At Mockingbird, these people are way more fucking cool, but with zero attitude. So if this has happened to you too, you must check out Mockingbird. Also, their salon is just damn attractive — giant mirrors mounted on old doors, cute vases attached to/​floating on the walls. I want my home to look this cute.
BIG FYI: TIPS ARE IN CASH ONLY! Sorry to caps it, but srsly. You can pay for your cut with your card, but I repeat, tips are in cash only.

Really happy with my hair. Jenna did a great job and was very cool to talk with. Perfect vibe for me. Obviously great stylists with a laid back attitude. Definitely recommend.

I saw Nichol today and it was GREAT! I came in with a lot of dead/​split ends and was expecting to have to chop off a lot of it. Nichol to the rescue! She cut a few inches off and gave me great long layers. A great cut and great conversation. PLUS I bought some really cute tibetan quartz stud earrings that were up on the counter (also made by Nichol!)
Overall: great experience, totally worth the money. I just hope that next time I get to see the shop puppy!

Heidi (not the owner, the adorable one!) you did such an amazing job on my little sister. She’s so happy with her hair and believe me, she used to walk out; sobbing over the mess other hairdressers done to her hair and having hair anxiety as I do, she was so worried but when I told her that Mockingbird Salon doesn’t perform styles, but miracles, she felt safe.
Dalena, my baby sister, couldn’t stop smiling and as a Freshman starting college; she couldn’t start her year off on a better foot.

I went to American Mortals and got a really great haircut and partial high light but they charged me $ 230… almost $ 100 more than they quoted me. So I started looking for other salons.
Mockingbird has former AmMo stylists who studied at Sassoon so I went for it. Jenna did a good job the first time she did my hair, and the second time around was even better. Her cuts last. My hair grew out very nicely… usually I need another haircut before I need another highlight. She’s also super nice and welcoming. She remembered lots of what we talked about during my first visit. This is definitely my salon! And good prices… $ 155 for cut, partial highlight, toner after tip (they only accept cash tips btw!!)
