I live right around the corner from this café and eat there weekly. The sandwiches are healthy, delicious, and fairly priced. I’m vegetarian and they have a lot of options for me.

If you are at the Italian Market, strolling or browsing, do yourself a favor and go around the corner where 9th and Christian meet, and on Christian you will find (look rest hard or you’ll miss it) Lya’s, whose signage includes the byline «regular or vegetarian». Since I’m irregular — nay, completely abnormal (vegan) I was pleased to see I would be respected and welcome.
It’s the size of a closet and the menu is small — all good signs. This place deserves all thumbs, all fingers up in praise, as the tofu bahn mi I had was right in every way. They do a Cuban here which I’d be eager to try if I ate flesh, but another reviewer gave it props so judging from my sandwich, I’m not surprised it’s legit.
A secret spot? Not intentionally. But if you’re feeing all Indiana Jones while you’re in the market, just pop around that corner.
