Las Lomas is a Mexican Bakery/Store located at the end of the Italian Market on 9th Street. After passing by a few times, I decided to venture in and see what they had to offer– which was ALOT more than I expected. The place was packed with products, and the back had a huge display of baked goods– yum! The baked goods are not labeled with a name or price– so you’re taking a gamble on whatever you pick. After reviewing all the options– based on looked alone– I selected a muffin like item topped with chocolate and sprinkles. The muffin, like all of their baked items, was huge and easily shared among two people. The muffin came to a $ 1.50, less than I expected. After taking my first bite I discovered it was corn muffin– not something I would have originally picked– but it was surprisingly good! I’m making it my goal to try all of their mystery baked goods– I’ll keep Unilocal updated on the progress.

I came back a few times & realized that the sweet twisty thing I like is called a churro. Las Lomas’s churros are still solid though not as great as I thought before — I’ve had much more delicious churros since then. Churro is good, soft and doughy on the inside: 3.5 stars Doughnut is a bit dry: 2 stars Mille-feuille or Napoleon is okay but not flaky enough: 2.5 stars Horn-shaped thing filled with custard is not recommended, dense pastry with a custard filling that doesn’t taste good: 0 stars

These days, there are tons of Mexican grocery stores in S Philly, with 90% of them carrying the exact same things: tortillas, packaged breads and sweets by Bimbo, salsas and canned vegetables by Herdez and La Costena, juice drinks by Jumex and Boing!, a few sugary conchas near the front of the store, maybe some dried jamaica leave and other spices — they all have the SAME stuff. But Las Lomas has fresh cakes and pastries, too. And, granted, Mexico isn’t known for its pastry chefs, but you get some interesting variations here on what you’re probably used to – and you can probably get a great deal on a birthday cake.
