I signed up for this class on a whim last night through ClassPass because I was feeling antsy and had seen it pop us as one of the only dance offerings through the program. After looking at the Web site, I was expecting a high-energy, dance-inspired aerobic workout based on hip hop, reggaeton and club beats. And while I did leave the class covered in sweat, I think that was more due to the fact that the building where the class was held was not air conditioned, and the two measly floor fans that were set up did little to cool off a class of 15 women jumping around for an hour. The instructor who taught the class was pretty awful in my opinion. She never introduced herself, and not once did she smile throughout the class or look like she was having fun(in fact, she stuck her tongue out of her mouth the whole time). The moves surely were inspired by dance, but they changed every 2 counts, so it was impossible to keep up — as soon as you thought you knew what you were doing, she was on to a new move. She also never explained what she was doing or gave any guidance to the group. Even in dance-inspired aerobics classes, it’s sort of best practice to keep a move going for 4 – 8 counts to give the class time to absorb what you’re doing and follow along. If you literally just stand in front of the room and do a full-on dance routine that you aren’t teaching or using verbal instruction with(neither of which she did), it’s nearly impossible for people to keep up. I’m a pretty good dancer, so I was able to catch on(mostly), but I watched the rest of the class in the mirror and a good chunk of them looked consistently confused and off the music. So if you’re a beginner or just have issues picking up choreography, chances are you might feel a little lost in this class. Half-way through the class we broke to do some floor exercises — the instructor said she had some«ab and butt» work for us. This consisted of exactly ONE ab exercise and two butt exercises and then that was over. The songs were really short and although I was sweating, my heart rate really didn’t get up as high as I like. I take other hip hop and dance party classes around Philly, and in those classes my lungs burn because the cardio is so intense. Here I hardly took a water break. I won’t be returning to this class, and would suggest that others look elsewhere. Check out Philly Dance Fitness instead — they have an awesome hip hop class with Trina on Saturdays where you do aerobics but also learn a mini routine and Timaree teaches Dance Party Boot Camp and Cardio Pop on Thursdays and Sundays. Her classes are hands down my favorite in the city and the prices are comparable.

LOVE this class! It’s the bessst when you are sweating like a mofo from twerking(can i get a haayy)! The class is taught Zumba style(follow the leader) and you go through about 5 – 10 different recent, fun songs that you’ll actually recognize so you can bust out the moves at da club. There is no official water break so you’re just dancing the entire time. Half way through, we do an ab sequence and it is brutal to get through a plank after you’ve just danced your booty off for a half hour before. No technical experience needed, but I think you’ll get a lot more out of the class if you can stay on beat & follow steps well. Some of the songs are more straight twerking, others are more technical hip hop. You can wear street clothes(kicks/sweats) or workout clothes, anything you can move in! The studio is a community studio, so don’t expect anything fancy but its large!
