Very hIgh prices, tons of junk gear, and the least helpful owner of any store I’ve ever been to. No thanks.

Tons of used equipment, great location and… the place is almost always empty. Why? NTY wants TOP dollar for their items. Their initial haggling price points are so high as to be insulting. The owner is not particularly personable or likeable(far from it, in fact) and he’s cheap. I once sold an amp cabinet to him in a time of financial need. From him I got $ 40; he then put it on the floor tagged for $ 300(!) Yes, it’s his prerogative to profit but had he not bent me over so far I might have been inclined to walk in and spend some money in his store one day in the future. Instead, I’ve not seriously considered spending anything there in years. BTW, the last time I checked that same amp cabinet has been sitting on the showroom floor for over TWELVE years. I also witnessed a VERY shady business transaction that occurred there. I could scarcely believe what I heard. Scruples? Nope. Despite their rather impressive inventory musicians ‘in the know’ avoid the place like the plague. I suggest you do the same(unless you *must* have a particular item in stock and are willing to pay a princely sum for it).

The store does carry a LOT of stuff. Some beginner and some pretty nice vintage pieces too. The owner is a bit of a grmp but, considering the hold up, break-in’s etc, I can’t say that I blame him for being a bit on edge. His prices as marked tend to be very much on the high side but I’m told that if you have the cash, and good barging abilities, you might be able to get him into the fair price zone.

I stumbled upon this little shop while checking out the neighborhood after looking at an apartment. I have to admit that I am a guitar snob. I’ve been one ever since I started playing 15 years ago. And the only thing that could possibly make it worse is that I am also a huge tone snob. I also have one rule when purchasing musical equipment. Never buy a new guitar or amplifier. The quality standards of new instruments is crap. That said, I was happy to see a killer selection of used tube amps and a very solid selection of used guitars both high end and beginners models. The owner was a bit gruff at first, but it’s rare to meet a good guitar shop owner that isn’t. I asked him some basic questions and he seemed to be pretty knowledgeable in the gear that he carried. He gave me a card and shook my hand before I left. It will be tough to pass this place by without stopping in to check out the ear candy.

Ever dream of playing an instrument, but didn’t want to spend oodles of money just in case it didn’t work out? Have no fear, New To You Music is here! Finding its home on 9 Mile, this joint is loaded to the gills with guitars, drums, brass instruments and more. My first trip in i was on the hunt for a autoharp, no luck, but the owner made a few suggestions of where I may be able to land my paws on one. the prices are pretty fare, but come with your haggling skills, there’s a lot of instruments in this store that have been here for awhile. I’m sure with a little magic bartering, you could walk out of this joint with a guitar an amp for a darn good price. I don’t suggest shopping here for the great customer service, not that it’s horrible, just a bit drab. So, get your friends together, come up with a band name, grab some instruments from New To You Music, and jam until you can’t jam no more.
