Every year the entire town turns out for the annual lighting of America’s Tallest Living Christmas Tree, a tradition that goes back to apparently, 1934. The stage, located at the very end of town, hosts several carols sung by the town choir, along with speeches by local teens and memorials to passed town locals. The countdown begins and at the end, the tree, welcoming and huge is brightly lit and the entire town snaps pictures and oohs and ahhs. Everyone is then welcomed to partake in free Christmas cookies, warm cocoa, and a giant helping of Christmas cheer. In seasons where it isn’t storming and the weekend isn’t stunted due to bad weather, often horse drawn carriage rides accompany the open house block party prior to the lighting of the tree. Each business serves gratis warm drinks and often offer raffles or discounts on shopping that night. The entire weekend is filled with warm cheer and quite a bit of fun, culminating in the gorgeous lit display of the Tallest Living Christmas Tree which seems to brighten up the entire town while it stays lit.
