Irene’s Southern Cooking

I came here with my best friend because he needed his daily fix lol.
The greens, grean beans and peach cobbler were yummy. My friend lives down the street and gets the fried perch like everyday (his words lol).
It was a good meal and they get alot of business, we had to wait about 5 minutes to order and 15 minutes for our food to even be ready, but I’d say it was worth it.

I wanted to like Irene’s. it’s close to my house and I like soul food. It seemed like this would be the spot!
This is a carry-​out ONLY location. The menu has a lot of options– everything you would expect to find at a soul food joint. Chicken, perch, shrimp, ribs, meatloaf, etc. Sides include mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, greens, beans, dressing, etc. They also have a few desserts and even have kool-​aid.
I got 2 combos (they come w/​2 sides and cornbread) and peach cobbler for dessert. My boyfriend had fried chicken and ribs, with mashed potatoes and mac and cheese. He said everything was good for the most part, but that the ribs sucked. The mac and cheese is REALLY cheesy. Now, I love cheese, but it was too much for me. I had perch and shrimp, with dressing and mac and cheese. The shrimp was really greasy, but good. The perch was bad though– it tasted extremely fishy and it was pretty tough. I grew up with fresh perch, so maybe I am used to the good stuff, but I still have high expectations. The dressing was kind of mushy and really salty– not that great. The shining stars were the peach cobbler and the cornbread– very tasty.
Overall, it wasn’t worth the $ 34, and I doubt I’ll give them another shot. I’m moving on to the many other options available in the area, even if I have to drive a little farther.
Oh, and they do take credit cards.

I like Irene’s
its a good soul food place. not as good as motor city soul food, but up there. again my obsession with smothered pork chops is fullfilled. and they have very good greens. corn bread there is nice and sweet just the way i like it. the mac and cheese is alright.
they have above par fried chicken according to the bf (i never order it)
this location is on 8 mile just a little east of livernois and is only carryout. i’m not sure that they take credit cards either.
and if you want you can go across the street and pick up some porn!
