Facing old age is not a pleasant thought. Realizing that your home in its present configuration may not suit your needs in 10 or 20 years is a startling revelation! However, in the hands of an Elder Care specialist like Owner/Partner Barb Baker of Elder Living Construction, the unknown can turn into a very relaxing and underwhelming experience! It was with some trepidation that I visited with Barb at her beautiful showroom last week. She showed me the special designs for kitchens, bath rooms and exterior entrance and egress that looked user friendly and non-imposing. Simple things like grab bars and railings looked helpful, but more sophisticated moving cabinets, counters and even kitchen appliances really impressed me with their practicality. I could imagine a person in a wheelchair being able to lower a countertop or cupboard so that they could have better access to them. Or, someone with difficulty climbing into a bath tub or sauna being able to enter through a door at floor level. Ramps may be one possible solution for people who are in wheel chairs, but those who can walk might be more comfortable with low rise stairs that only rise 4″ between steps. Barb and her very professional staff of designers, carpenters, electricians, plumbers and other tradesmen, and even an occupational therapist, are not only knowledgeable, but they are genuinely concerned about the ultimate results! I don’t need them quite yet, but when and if I do require some rebuilding and accommodation, I know exactly where to go. Elder Living Construction will be my first, only and best choice!
